What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Yep, I ordered the full Brush guard model with dual fog cutouts - no center light bar mount. Should be here mid-late February/early march.

 

I thought he's always worked for em? I swear he had mentioned it on the FB page in the past.

 

Good lord that thing is sexy. Really wishing I'd gone that route with those wheels instead of the black pro comps I got.

 

Same here! I have black pro comps too and a buddy at work has some sick bronze wheels and im kicking myself for not going that route either! Looks soo good

 

You could always convert it. We just had a member here finish his and he said it wasnt that bad. I'll come lend a hand and bring big Donnie so we can break something.

 

I once installed a TV wall mount with the same Dewy impact. I once also replaced drywall in a rental...

Sweet thanks, I haven’t been as active as I used to be and guess I missed that.

 

I'd have to find a donor truck within my ability to bring home. I remember talking to @Thrussn just after he completed his conversion. He said that if he did it again he would have rather had the donor so he would have had all parts on hand.

Half tempted to drop in an idea that was suggested, but that would require our in house master of all things Yota @empty_lord to set everything straight.


That would be just pure, mean, adrenaline pumping, petrol induced speeeeeeeeed.

The easiest thing would be to find a V8 4×4 Part out I suppose and drop a bigger unit inside while I'm doing that. My understanding of how the wiring is I'd be replacing the wiring harnesses anyways so may as well go for more ooomph.

 

Of you were to do a v8 swap, get a Lexus ls430 v8. Little less torque, more horsepower, and aluminum block

@Tundra2 wait until Feb! I’m moving to Knoxville 1/29 and owe @FirstGenVol a beer.

 

One of you all will have to have an engine hoist if you're taking about the mondo job, but if you're talking about the bumper it may not be in until February. I haven't placed an order yet. I haven't had time to weigh in all the options I want for it.

 

I'll leave that up to Mr. @FirstGenVol 'cause I'm still fairly dumb at a lot of this stuff. Also I'm moving to an apartment until I'm sure where I want to buy, so it'll be a bit before I have tons of space, let alone a hoist lol

That's part of the reason I gotta get a majority of my "To Do" list done before then. I don't want to be the weirdo in the parking lot lol

 

Understood. I used to be the weirdo changing oil in the apartment parking lot at 2:30 in the morning on Sunday because it was the only time I had available.

 

I wouldn't be opposed to that necessarily, but my luck so far has been one thing turns into a couple day thing. For instance, the first oil change I did on this Tundra resulted in it sitting in the garage while I waited for the 8 new coils and MAF sensor. Probably why I overplanned/overbought on my brake job. Gotta have the garage to hide my shame.

 

Here's a quick summary of my regrets during the conversion.

The guy I bought all the parts from was parting out a Sequoia for a very good deal. If you can find a guy parting out your exact model, then you would be good with that. I just ran into a bunch of snags because I decided to pull the trigger before doing all the research.

I got my trans and front end from an 07 Sequoia since it shares the same engine and trans as the 05-06 Tundras. I ended up having to separately buy the ac control bezel, the engine harness, the 4wd module, the transfer case, a new driveshaft, and then the regear to match the rear end with the stock 4.10 I installed in the front.

The wiring in the Sequoia doesn't work with the tundra in the slightest since the Sequoia can unlock the transfer case. This also means the harness and computers won't work either.

The driveshafts I went through ended up running me more than the entire conversion (minus the regear).
I got a junkyard driveshaft from an 05 Tundra like mine, but the center support bearing was shot. Also, the Sequoia transfer case sticks out about an inch more than the tundra one making the two piece install more complicated. I ended up pulling the trigger on a second driveshaft that was a one piece. That one was steel and ended up having a really bad vibration above 65. I put up with it until I could have it looked at. I figured out the one piece was too narrow for it's length and I had to have another built for me.

As of yesterday, I have a new one piece and it's 1/4" thick aluminum instead of 1/8" or 1/16" steel and it only barely vibrates above 90.

If I had a donor that got wrecked, I would've had all the bits I needed for the cost of the donor and nothing more. I was nickel and dimed to death

I ran into literally every possible problem I could, but now the ride is mint if I don't think about the rear diff humm after the regear and the coolant leak from the thermostat

Also, find a Toyota FSM for your year Tundra. It'll give you torque specs and steps that will make the conversion 100x more pleasant.

 

Thanks, fellas. These are polished Mickey Thompsons that are plastidipped bronze. Plastidip is surprisingly pretty tough stuff. And if it gets messed up, just spray again! My next set of wheels will probably be some RockTrix bronze. Might pick them up and put these on my wife's GX if Ebay runs a coupon during the holidays...

Well, I was waiting for a shop to call me to let me know if they can swap the coils. I decided to play around with the cutting because I was going to have to cut anyway, and after a little bit it seemed to clear really well so I went for a drive.

The drive went really well, Didn't feel any rubbing but hard to tell if I could hear any, as my trucks on the louder side. Maybe Im in @Professional Hand Model s boat and I can run 33s at 21.5 lift? The pitch weld seems fine, just had to cut alittle of the inner fender liner near it.

Since I went up a size but the rims and tires are lighter and softer, actually driving felt soooo nice. Guess Im going to get them aligned and just leave it until I install my 5100s

 

Never had a rub anywhere but on the frame under the footwells. I’ve posted pics of it after 17 years of rub. You’d hear it pulling into tight parking spots only at full turn.

 

My offset is -10 so its not close to frame. Maybe in pitch weld territory

 

Looks nice. I guess the wider wheel stance makes your trimming necessary. Also, my Michelins are technically 32.8”.

 

Ya mine are 32.8 or .9 but They are P rated so my treads arent as deep

Threw the plates off and I gained about the same as what you did. Now I am at 1.5" in both wheel wells. Also significant improvement in the overall sag of the bumper, Way more up now.
