Ford's Ecoboost V6 proves that wrong. The performance is more than there and better than the V8. Now Ford's reliability is another matter, Toyota wouldn't botch that part. The average person who buys a truck cares about MPG. People here with 37's and 600lbs in armor don't. But that's not what most people do with their trucks nor does it help Toyota achieve their goal: making money. This is a similar argument boomers have made for decades arguing that all full size trucks need solid front axles. They don't.

Once electric drivetrain tooling is more standardized and the costs mitigated, the torque from those motors will make the V8 a weak dinosaur. Its just the truth of technology. V8's aren't the end all be all.

If anyone can make a reliable V6 Turbo for a half-ton, that's Toyota.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. But in the meantime, V8 roar it is.

Electric is most assuredly the future and ultimately will likely make most ICEs a thing of the past. Right now though, the cost to benefit is not there yet, at least, in the new market. I new electric vehicle commands a premium over a comparable (not considering acceleration here) vehicle that the delta would buy years of gas. Eventually their cost will decrease and those differences will be marginal.

Other factors still need work as well, range, towing range, charging rate, etc.

The Pentastar V6 is actually a pretty reliable motor. It's almost like a modern day 350 chevy as there are millions of them out there.

Its still a bit of a crap shoot. My uncle logged 500000 miles on one w/o issue. Others get the tick, even though theyve supposedly been fixed.

Everytime someone asks for more gears I get nervous. After having dealt with the Tacomas new 6AT, Im over joyed with the Tundras trans. If they add more gears and it hunts like the Taco, I'd be a hard pass.

Not to mention that that supposed 15% fuel economy increase disappears as soon as you start working the engine (if you ever saw it at all). A 3.5EB gets the exact same 9 mpg towing a travel trailer that every other gas halfton does

GM and Ford have already figured out that a big pushrod V8 is still the best gasoline option for towing and hauling.

I think it will have an 8 speed trans in it. I think the Lexus has an 8 speed but may be mistaken

Toyota 8 speed transmissions are bulletproof. What made them so unpopular was the Eco mode, but AFAIK, they're as solid as they can get.

A beefing up here and there would be great for Tundras.

Correct! and it was mated to a V8 no less

As a recovering AMG junky, I know a thing or two about giant V-8s, either NA or Kompressored (I know, not really a word).
But even AMG sees the writing on the wall, and most, if not all of their future offerings will be a hybrid to one degree or another, maybe even as early as next year. The technology is there, silent Telsas are out destroying very fast cars at the dragstrip and regulations are forcing manufactures to accelerate their R&D and introduction of this new generation of motivation... its gonna happen, check that, its happening. Go check out what AMG is doing in the F1 world right now. The technology and power they are making is insane!

As far as a cost benefit analysis as a consumer, obviously it makes no sense to trade in a late-model gasser for a newer model with a TTV6 or hybrid powerplant just to save at the pump. It would take years and years to break even and would not make good financial sense. That being said, if you were in the market already, either to replace an aging vehicle or add another to your fleet, then yes, it makes sense that you'd want the most capable vehicle for your money, and that's probably not going to be a big gas thirsty V-8 in the coming years. Sure, the Fords have issues and the claimed MPGs from these newer motors aren't exactly proving true, but the tech is advancing rapidly and we'll be there soon enough. I have no doubt when/if Toyota drops the 5.7 it won't be to take a step back, it will be because they have a much better replacement. I just bought my 2020 a few months ago, and I have no plans on "trading up" if the next Tundra comes with a claimed 30MPG, but I do know that the next new vehicle I buy years down the road will likely be a hybrid or turbo, not necessarily by choice but because that's what will be the norm by then.

This. I love the V8 in the current Tundra and bought a 2020 because I didn't want to be an early adopter of whatever comes next. By 2030 or so, I figure Toyota will be making a bad ass plug-in and/or hybrid. The garage addition I'm planning will be roughed in for electric vehicle chargers.

My old work truck was a F150 with ecoboost v6 turbo 4x4. It had good power 13.1 to 13.6 mpg but it's no Tundra. Ford bodies just too square for me. The new ones look like a box with wheels.

I owned turbo, hybrid, and natural aspire vehicles. Hybrid awd will be my choice. Both turbo and hybrid vehicles are more fun to drive than natural aspire one.

My wish list for the next gen Tundra:

Leave the 5.7 as an option
Consider 8 speed tranny, no start/stop bs
Increase the payload to be similar to the comp.
    Add a real locking rear
    Bring back the transmission cooler
Redesign the cab mounts to allow for 35's
Don't make them as ugly as a Chevy
Set the ride height on 4x4's much higher than Ram
Keep making them more reliable than Ford

Most people I know with pickups do not care about better gas mileage and couldn't tell you what they average. They buy them for the capability. If they did they'd be driving economy class cars.

Since I have a 2019 with a 5.7 and in the past kept my GM trucks over 10 years. I won't have to worry about what engine Toyota puts in their trucks for quite some time.

I'd like to see them a little lower and smaller than they are now. I noticed while driving my wife's Corolla that a new Chevy Colorado has the same size front end as a ~15 year old Avalanche. That's ridiculous to me. Scraping the windshield of my truck is already so difficult.

Also, it needs auto 4x4 and centre console buttons I can reach while driving.

I like the size as is, but Im 6'3". The current full sized chevys are a little tight for me.

I agree on auto 4x4, forgot about that (coming from gm).
