Happy Sunday Tundra fam! My SIL is considering buying a Tundra and I'm curious about your thoughts. The truck is a 2018 Crewmax SR5 TRD, 35k on the clock. It's for sale at a Dodge dealership and their "no haggle" lowest price is $44,995.00. The truck is in good but not great shape. My concern in proceeding with the deal is that it has the cam tower leak on both sides. I know it's still under the 5/60 power train warranty, but wondering how others here would go at this? KBB and NADA put it at $42,475. I told him not to exceed that price as there are a few nit-picky things wrong with it and to negotiate that they have the CT leak fixed thru the local Toyota dealer before he commits to taking delivery. Your thoughts?

I’d pay an extra $1500-2000 and get the same truck new.

quick search on cars.com and autotrader and you’ll find a better deal. When I was looking new Toyota Corwin of Bellevue seemed to have some well priced new once you inquire for their best e-price by email.

I think the hook for him is that he would be trading in a 9 year old, tired Ram and they're giving him 15k for it.

I've only traded one vehicle into a dealer, and that was because it was an absolute worthless POS. It was in nice condition, but had no market. I couldn't get anyone else to take it...even after cutting the price to below dealer wholesale. If the Ram is just tired, it has to be worth more than what they're offering. He should spiff it up and sell it himself...pickup market is hot, even Rams.

A new Tundra is the better choice imo. Toyota will fix the cam tower leaks under powertrain warranty for whoever owns the truck, but I suspect they know the Dodge dealer isn't going to have the truck long. The repair might not get their best attention. I would rather be dealing with the Toyota dealer myself as a potential future customer for service and vehicles. Fixing all the other stuff through the Toyota dealer is a lot of moving parts and potential headaches. A used-car salesman's job is to say words that make you think he's agreed to all that you've asked, without firmly committing to doing anything you've asked.

    Hard pass....

I know it is an interesting time with all time high used prices, but with a factory rebate and being able to travel, you can get new for that price.....

I'm pretty sure that was the sticker price on my 2018 TRD Crew.

Zero point zero chance that I would pay $45k for a used truck with known issues......you can practically buy new for that.

That may be the only positive otherwise there is nothing good about the deal. I'd advise go new and see which dealer will give best trade value. He can send pics of his truck and vin to get a value. Some dealer will bite and work with him.

The no haggle dealerships will sell it eventually, they will finance someone even if over book value. Try to get them to offer more on trade in.
Used truck market is high right now.

No haggle fixed pricing is already a no go.

Add in that it's sitting on a dodge lot, with oil leaking, and priced several thousand dollars too high, I'm not sure why you need anyone tell you to run away

Thanks for the responses fellas. You all pretty much summed up what I told him. I think this is an impulse thing, he's been wanting a Tundra for quite a while and pickings are extremely thin in this area. As much as I want to just tell him NO, he's a big boy and I can only offer my advice, so I guess I'll see what he decides tomorrow.
