On Board Air Suggestions

I chose the ARB twin because of the duty cycle. Used the @Bannock452 mount. Put in an under the hood outlet and one in the rear bumper for the boat trailer. Easy to plumb in so I don't need a 50" hose.

Here’s how I did mine. Nothing fancy. I want to eventually put the plug in the bumper, but I wouldnt run the compressor with the hood down esp if the engine is hot, so I have to pop the hood anyway.

I’ve considered CO2, but man, it’s pricey. It’s crazy fast though, and can do a few trucks with a tank. Always an option, though.

 

Damn, burst my bubble. I really wanted to just leave the hood closed. But your point makes sense when everything is hot. I use a little portable one to fill up after a trail run, that thing gets insane hot.

 

Arb makes a remote intake kit, which I believe Vizsla has in his pic. You could mount that remotely and still pull in cold air. But the compressor itself will get hot. I’m not sure how much heat it can take before breaking.

 

Oh, ok. I was wondering what those were. I like that too, but rethinking the compressor under the hood now.

 

I saw this the other day, thought it was interesting. Not specifically made for a Tundra, but I’m sure it could easily attach to the bed rail system. It’s made to house an ARB twin compressor with molle panels on the sides for accessories. Plus it keeps it out of the engine bay heat and rain/dirt if you have a bed cover.

 

I use the ARB Portable Compressor. It's great for airing up after the trail and you can tote it around for other uses since it has clamps to hook up to 12v. It also stays clean because of the carrying case and can be stored in the cab. My only complaint is the hose fitting at the compressor gets really really hot after 4x tire inflations. Other than that, 25psi to 40psi in less than 3min per tire(35") and the mobility make up for the excessive heat.

From what I hear, the welding shops fill co2 pretty inexpensively. I have heard NOT to go to paintball/airsoft stores as they are very expensive. If the entry price is a concern, look at Polyperformance or build your own kit. The PowerTank stuff is pretty expensive. It's nice though, you get a metal handle and a cool looking tank. Your local welding shop might also offer swap tanks. It's a bit more expensive on the front end, but in the future, you can just drop in and they'll swap out your empty with a full one. Nice thing about swaps is you'll never have to concern yourself with a hydro test. If you own a tank, you'll have to get it hydro'd every few years.

Same here. I also bought an extra hose so I can reach my boat trailer tires. I do wish there was a good way to get power without popping the hood though.

Yep I saw this for sale too. But there are mixed reviews on airing up. What’s your experience with airing up the tires?

 

Sure. I haven’t had time to shorten the harnesses yet. I’m hoping to have a couple of hours to work on it this weekend, but work and my side hustle have both been keeping me busy.

I mainly use for airing up farm equipment tires and letting people know they're driving to slow in the fast lane.

 

Had a fun weekend and installed the ARB twin compressor along with my adaptation of the "wifey" air system using the Rago compressor mount and the Rago wifey manifold mount. I wanted to include an in-line air tank and the AVS 1 gallon aluminum tank was a perfect size for under the hood. It is only 4 inches in diameter and included 4 ports. This allowed me to have 1 input port, 1 drain port, and 2 outputs. I was really impressed with this 4.5 lb tank.

The ARB wiring harness is a bit interesting. If you run lockers, this harness is perfect for it includes all the connections for the switches and such. However, if you don't run lockers, then this harness is a bit of a crazy overkill. Instead of cutting up the harness to get rid of the unneeded wiring, I simply created my own 2 wire harness (purple and black wire) with a Delphi 3 pin PED connector. Turned out much cleaner.


Since the "wifey" system requires using the shut off valve under the hood, I decided to mount the on/off switch under the hood as well. Found a nice LED button switch that was easily mounted in the hole between the headlight and battery.


Anyhow, the install turned out perfect and now I can deflate and inflate all 4 tires at once.

Thanks... I like their mount that included a variety of pre-drilled holes. This made attaching my fabricated tank mount and battery terminal block expansion mount a snap.

I've got about $150 into my CO2 setup. 10lb aluminum tank, regulator, hose. All from Amazon. Costs $20 to fill at the local scuba shop and takes less than 5 minutes to do all 4 truck tires and 2 trailer tires. Four trips so far and the tank isn't empty.

 

Dang, that sounds pretty great. Does the regulator also show you how much is left?

 

I got the one that has no gauge and is preset to 150psi output. I just weigh the tank to see how full it is.

Made some adjustments to my on-board air system today. I wanted more air for tools so I added another 2 gallon tank underneath giving me a combined 3 gallons.



Added the output port under the rear bumper.



Also added a high pressure gauge for the tool use in conjunction to the lower presser gauge for tire inflations.

 

That looks great. Do you use a lot of air tools when you are out?
