OK look at it this way... Since it IS a heat exchanger the engine coolant should be getting hotter but it does not seem to be. Mine stays right about 197° no matter what the ATF is.

If my ATF is ~200° that's fine BUT IME I have seen the temperature drop from 250° down to 220° in less than a minute and coolant remain the same.... Perhaps the short run of hose air cools it....

BTW MY puck is labeled a warmer so it's NOT a cooler.... so there! :p

Could it be that the coolant cooling strategy is good?

That the thermostat, clutch fan and radiator work so well together that the heat being exchanged into the coolant is being removed quickly by the cooling system?

I dont have the drawing in front of me, where is the coolant from the puck being introduced into the circuit?

So, I'd like to ask. Where is your heat going if you drop 30F within a minute? Apparently something or something(s) collectively are working to remove heat.

I feel this is a simple issue and owners can basically be broken down into one of the following categories.

    1. If you are not going to keep your truck beyond 3-5 years, you have no worries about adding a cooler. You have a warranty that will last that long and you will be trading/selling before you have to bother worrying about adding a cooler.
    2. If you are planning to keep the truck beyond the factory warranty then you have two options for peace of mind: cooler or extended warranty. The extended warranty will be shorter term than the cooler for those who aren't going to keep it as long, and the cooler will be a solution for overheating worries for the life of the truck.

The reason it is so simple is that these transmissions are built solidly enough that even IF the higher operating temps are going to decrease the life of the transmission or its components we do not have enough data to indicate how much it is being decreased. We do have some pretty solid evidence that the transmission will likely survive the factory, and even the extended warranty periods on most trucks. This would mean that there is no real down side to adding an auxiliary cooler, because the odds of you needing your warranty and it being denied are very slim.

If you are in category 1, don't worry about anything because you won't have it long enough to bother. If you are category 2, decide how long you plan to keep the truck beyond the factory warranty and buy the appropriate warranty/cooler. As stated, pretty simple.

I already have Nick’s transmission cooler kit. Hope to install friday or next week. I decided to check my pan, tc and engine temp on my 75 mile trip home. Outside Temp was in the 40’s. Had some small hills, stop-n-go traffic and rural driving. did see slightly higher temps but forgot to have my wife screenshot while I was driving. Theses temps are not anything to worry about but I wasn’t towing my trailer.

it goes into the cooling system. It gets removed through radiator and cooling fan cooling.

Installed the kit last night. When ambient temps were in the 90's, my pan would sit between 221f and 225f. Now that it's cooler, my temps would be 209f - 2015f. Just went for a quick ride and pan would not come off of 185f. I think mine may run hotter than a stock pro due to the heavier tires. Have a 400 mile drive to Windrock tomorrow, trail riding, then a 400 mile ride home. Interested to see how much the cooler helps.

I drive roughly 45,000 a year so warranties never last long for me. Keep my trucks on average 4-5 years.

A cooler that uses water after it was heated by the engine :monocle:

Diagram shows the puck in parallel. Is this accurate?

EDIT: checked my truck, lines are series from heater core to the puck and back.

I was hitting 222 within 20 minutes of light, non-towing, driving. After cooler install I have broken 185 once after and hour of driving up a mountain. Approx elevation climb 6,000 ft. Was going between 40 and 60 the whole time.

Drove from the coast up to Windrock. On the interstate climbs at 6-7% grade for 4 miles my pan never got over 194f. Ambient temps were 75f. Not towing, but bed fully loaded with camping gear.

Main road to trailhead at Windrock, 8% grade for a couple miles going 10mph to 16ish, pan got to 210f.

On the trails, whether up or down, pan stayed under 185f.

    170?

I assume he has a cooler cause of the temps, but am wondering for sure too.

It seems like those who install a cooler on the 19+ are seeing 185 as a normal temp. I think on my 18 the thermostat doesn’t open until around 195. That’s when the hoses going to the cooler feel hot. If I don’t drive far enough for the atf to go over 194ish, the hoses are not hot.

Are they pinning it open, or did Toyota change something in the thermostat? It should be the same part #.

    Mine is not pinned.

I averaged 185f on 400 of the 420 mile drive.

Same thermostat. The slight increase would be due to a auxiliary cooler having a better cooling efficiency than one routed through the condenser.
