High RPM at start up

Still relatively new with this truck and trying to sort things out.

She starts at a high RPM which will drop after about a minute of idle, which I understand to be considered normal. Question... when the RPM drops what is the typical range? Just under 1000 is what I see.

Maybe related... I am averaging 14 mpg even on long freeway runs... normal? Anything I could do to improve it?

 

How high on startup? Clean the throttle body plate.

 

There may be a decal on the underside of the hood or in the engine compartment somewhere that may state the warm idle RPM. Probably 750 ± 50. I'm guessing that when it first fires up it will get to somewhere around 1500 or fewer RPMs then drop to 1200 RPMs, then decrease as it warms? If so, that's pretty par.

 

600-1000 is the typical idle range, once warmed up. It will fluctuate depending on if A/C is on or not.

 

Engine at full operational temp:

1) 590-600 rpm in D with foot on brake in stopped position.

2) 725-750 rpm in P at idle.

 

14 mpg is about right. The best way to improve Mpg is to modify your driving habits.
After reading this post on tundrasolutions I was able to push MPG about 1-2 mpg.I also use fuelly to track mpg.

 

I’m getting about 17-18mpg on long highway trips.

13-14 in the city.

Sounds normal. My truck does the same. On cold mornings, it will idle around 1500 for a minute before dropping to just below 1000.

Double cabs are always around 3 mpg shy of what access cabs can get in real life. 14mpg is spot on from what others have reported for a double cab.

 

I agree. 15mpg stock and 14mpg after lift/tires. But I drive like I’m 80.

 

Dead on.. this is what I observe on my LC and Tundra.. both having same engine.

 

That's surprising. I just Googled the differences and found two things:
The DC is 510 lbs heavier than the AC
The DC is 3.3 inches taller than the AC

That would explain it. I'm surprised at both these numbers though. Are they correct?

Yeah that sounds right. DC is taller at the hood, the cab, and the bed sides are taller. They stretched the truck tall-ways so it would look more proportional from the length change.

 

I recall the DC also being wider than the AC.

 

Yup, its a bit bigger every way you look at it on the outside.

 

I wonder how many of those extra 40 horses get cancelled out due to the 510 extra pounds?

 

Depends if you have TRD stickers or not.

 

Bigger is always better. At least thats what she told me......

 

01 AC to 06 DC I can definitely tell the 06 has more power, but part of that could be the 5 speed transmission. Maybe it would be different going from an 06 AC to DC.
