I have a 4-door 2x4 SR-5 and it appears that most after-market tailgates do NOT fit my truck. No, I do not understand why the tailgate, of all things, would be different, but who am I to question!

SURE - I could order one from Toyota and pay through the nose - but I'm trying to find a better solution. Local junk-yards have been a bust.

I think that it would help if I knew what my "Vehicle Option" was - that appears to be a five character descriptor that Toyota uses (ala GSK30 / UCK30, etc). If anyone knows what my truck is, that'd be great!

    So... thanks!

Well, the thing with Ebay is that they have aftermarket, unpainted shells (which would do the trick) but they say "does not fit four door model!" - hence my question...

I don't see how the four door model would have any effect on tailgate fitment??

Agreed... And yet, there *seems* be a difference. I'd like to find a guy with a standard cab and see what the differences were.

Seriously?? I figured it would have cut down on manufacturing expenses if the tailgates were the same size on all models?!?!?!

1st gen double cabs are taller and wider than std and access cabs. I'd keep your eyes on Craigslist. Here in Colorado I see guys selling tailgates on there all the time. Although I haven't paid attention how many of those are for double cabs since I don't need one.

I'd expect - if you don't lock you TG, it's easily swiped.

That worked. Found a silver one down in Chula Vista - $350 in good shape. Thanks!

Yeah, I never did - but once my TG got smashed at a car wash (of all places - the owner refused to help me out) I started eye-balling trucks in parking lots... So now I think I will lock my "new" one, just as soon as I get the lock switched from my old TG, which is destined for the recycle dumpster.

Hose clamps on the tailgate bracket where you pop it out is a good deterrent. There's a thread on it somewhere here
