I read it as the opposite. I understand it as him saying to not worry about MPGs. If you do and you're trying to shop for mods to improve gas mileage, you're not likely to get much return on that investment (mods to improve mileage are basically non-existent - especially if you're looking for consistent improvement of 3 MPG or better).

Many people just fill up whenever/wherever with no regard of how much fuel costs at one station v another. I find that I get more of an improved TCO by being aware of where I buy gas. Right now, for example, there is a $0.40 delta depending on where you fill up. That's an $8.00 difference on 20 gallons.

This 100%. I care less about MPG and more about miles per tank. Our 2014 TDI Q5 can go 600 miles or more on road trips and 500 plus in normal driving. That's more than twice as many miles between fillups than with my Tundra.

here are the stats of my 2016 tacoma v6 sport dcab vs our 2018 tundra v8 crew cab. this is the spouse's daily city driver (city is only about 5 miles from center to edge).

mind you only look at the fill-up section to compare and you will see that there is not much difference between the smaller v6 tacoma and the v8 tundra cost wise in mpg or price per gallon. just a side note, she fills at 1/2 tank due to our weather up in ND in the winter and cost shock of not having to fill up a empty 38gal tank.

if you go by $/mi, the tacoma is 13 cents and the tundra is 21 cents

tacoma 50 fill ups for total of $1372
tundra 144 fill ups for total $5770

if you expand the cost of the tacoma to be 144 fill ups it comes out to roughly $3727, about $2k less for the same amount of fill ups. you have to take into account the cost of getting something with better gas mileage and how long it would take you to get the delta from driving the tundra to something else to actually start saving money. $2k in gas costs over a period of 4-5 yrs if you calculated the tank fill ups is not really saving alot.

but in the grand scheme of things, the comfort level for our 2 GSP hunting dogs in the folded back seat area is world different than the over cramped tacoma was worth the cost since we dont keep our dogs in the bed driving out to hunting spots. they get the same comforts we do when driving to/from spots, but that is just how we are.

One of the main reasons I bought the Tundra was the fact that with the Taco I had to fill up three times when I picked up my boat in La.. If the Tundra still only had the 26 gallon tank I probably would not have bought one.

I bought another Tundra because the gas mileage sucks with the soon to be gone 5.7L

I really don't understand how we have a 26 gallon tank, but the light goes on at less than 20 gallons used! Why even advertise it as a 26 gallon tank?!? Less than 80% of the tank is "used".

Built in 6 gallon reserve. FYI....has nothing to do with the fuel pump functionality.

It is called a reserve. Have you ever tried to see how far you can go with light on?

I've never had a reserve in a tank of that high of a percentage. A reserve is usually a couple of gallons, not almost 30% of the tank's capacity.

I don't think I mentioned "fuel pump functionality". Why have a "reserve" of almost 30% of the fuel tank's capacity? 2 gallons? 3 gallons? sure. 6?!? That's 90 miles of reserve even with only 15 mpg. 90 miles?!? Come on man! (insert "come on man" gif)

On another one of these threads I showed my math on how the 5.7L gets better mileage than a 2.5L Camry... whence divided by “Liter - Cola” (...displacement 07 model years).

I was excited to compare the real world MPG between a lifted 5.7/6 speed Tundra with 34.33” tires and a 100% stock 200 series Land Cruiser. Figured the 5.7/8 speed Cruiser would average significantly better MPG given it’s on stock sized 285/60R18 (31.5”). Kind of sad, given the Cruiser has the 8 speed.

Both are combined driving with more city than highway. Either Fulltime 4WD kills it, or my wife has a heavier foot than me :eek2:

Definitely love the Cruiser and the 5.7/8 speed combo, just wish it had the same 38 gallon tank as the Tundra and not a 24 gallon tank.

    First, nice fleet!

Second, your average was about the same, and your "best" could have been downhill with a tailwind in those ~50k miles tracked vs. her <2k miles. I'd be interested to see if that picks up over time. Also, because I'm lazy, what is the weight difference? Isn't the LC heavier?

Thanks, we spent years looking for a Land Cruiser. They’re not very many in our area, our dealer only seems to get 1 or 2 a year.

Yes I’ll be interested to see if it increases overtime as well. The Cruiser gets pretty good MPG if we do pure highway, but seems to get worse in stop and go city driving vs the Tundra.
The 20 was when the truck was 100% stock, only saw it once before I installed the lift and oversized tires.

Stock for stock, the Cruiser is probably ~250 pounds heavier than a 4x4 Crewmax Tundra.

Yeah, it’s heavier but not by much. I’d say with my lift, oversized tires, and mods I bet it’s a wash weight wise between the two.
