They don t make it easy to tweek the system. It has adware. It does what it wants. Try turning off updates; uh, you can t. If you are connected to internet It will download system updates, and reboot on a whim no matter what you are doing. Forget about saving your work if you haven t already. I believe microslop did that to combat power users who prefer to be in control. I ran windows 7 pro with updates turned off for years, and chose the updates I wanted. Apparently you can still use regedit in win 10, but I imagine that will go too eventually.

I do hate updates. I'm doing the 3 month pauses or whatever they are on mine.

As a high level person in a global tech company, I learned a long time ago that opinions and emotions mean absolution nothing. What matters is the market needs. Bottom line, in the business world the facts are:
    • Desktop: Windows is still the dominate desktop OS. So business's providing desktop solutions must use Windows to thrive.
    • Mobile: iOS is the dominate OS in the US, but Android is the dominate outside the US
    • Cloud: Not really applicable since cloud systems have both client side (browser based) and server side operations. The Microsoft Azure Cloud services is one of the best and most advanced cloud platforms available, however the other big 2 are also good. The 3 top cloud platforms are:
      • Microsoft Azure
      • Google Cloud
      • Amazon Cloud
Summary: The technological curve is strongly moving strongly to cloud based solutions. As a user, it then does not matter what client OS your using since the interface is through a browser. At this joint, use whatever OS that floats your boat because it's all through a browser and the particular elements of the OS are not being used do not matter. There are some exceptions to this due to some of the lesser used browsers may not properly handle all the client side scripting that may be sued. In this scenario, the most common browsers supported may be:
    • Google Chrome
    • Microsoft Edge 2 (the new open source version)
    • Firefox
    • Safari

For the most part a business solution does not allow for opinion, or emotion unless it adventagous to the bottom line. The market environment is governed by it s needs. That sounds reasonable. But speaking from my own (non-business) experience; opinion, and the subsequent emotions absolutely mean everything. If my user experience is not to my liking im off to better pastures.

I think businesses are realizing that you need to draw on people's emotions to sell things. Why does Apple do so well? It's not because their products are better or cheaper...

    C64 Basic -> Dos 5.x -> Win 3.1 -> Linux (1993) -> Win 95 -> Win 98 -> Win XP -> Win 7 -> Win 10 / MacOs

I do use Vagrant Ubuntu and CentOS for work if that matters.

Then it may not mean anything to you, but it sure did for me. I ran MX for some time. It s not bad to tell you the truth. At least it wasn t bad until the devs decided to lock down updates for Firefox. If you open Firefox preferences you will see, in the top left corner of the window, the words, "Managed by your Orginization". That s because they created an enterprise policy that takes control of updates, and takes the power from the user. I brought it up on the MX forum, and talked to some of the devs. I told them I found a way to circumvent the policy by deleting the policies.json file, and told them is was horseshit what they did because that s straight out of the microslop playbook. Linux is open source software, and once you start doing crap like that it ceases to be open source. They ended up creating the policy a different way, and locking my threads. The developers of MX are lazy bastards.

Yes that works for those programs but it doesn't work for file explorer. I relied very heavily on going to the "recent files" to go back to individual files that was possible from Win 7.

OS X. It’s a lot easier to develop software on a Unix based operating system. I haven’t booted up a windows machine in at least three years.

I left it off because I never installed it. I only install versions of Windows that work. Hence I also didn't install Windows Vista. Also, my usage of Win 3.1 was very little. I hated it, hence why I went after Linux for multitasking as DESQview on DOS wasn't cutting it.

There's also Windows NT (3.1) which I never installed, because while it seemed to be technically sound. it just didn't match up with my needs to play games, at that time in my life.

Sounds about right. When Microsoft bought the rights to OS2 they made their changes, and rebranded it NT. It was geared specifically for business applications. It wasn t really a gaming platform. NT was actually a milestone in an os. It give the installer the ability to choose between a fat32 and ntfs file systems. I format all of my thumbdrives and external drives in ntfs.

As it should have been. LOL

If I remember correctly (used to know a guy who worked for Microsoft), Windows ME was sort of a stopgap OS between Windows 98SE and Windows XP. From what I understand, it was so buggy/unstable because MS wanted to get it out so quickly that they circumvented/ignored a lot of the normal QA/QC stuff normally performed on an OS pre-release.

Yesterday I had to use a computer that was still running XP. It reminded me why I switched to Mac. It was running fine the last time I used it. I shut it down as always. It started fine but the ability to export the data had somehow corrupted itself. I couldn't offload a damn thing. We only keep it because of the data that is stored on it. I warned IT to back up all the data to a newer OS machine but it was never done. XP has for whatever reason likes to self corrupt. This machine has never been connected to a network. It was always a stand alone device running special hardware for diagnostics. We no longer use the hardware since upgrading to a new system. Unfortunately the old data could not be transferred so we made software that can compare the old data with the new. That's the only reason we haven't gotten rid of the XP machine. It's only a matter of time the XP machine will no longer be usable.
After about an hour of frustration and work arounds, I was finally able to pull the data. Fortunately most of the data we need has been pulled and translated to a different media for review.
