Not sure if this is the right place to post this....

The chrome is finally dead. Had my chrome vinyl caps vinyl wrapped today. Not 100%match to paint, but as close I am gonna get without painting them.96e3ca49f20b38b716c8afe413f51b2b_4e29287e1bbfbe4e56d55fc9fde03108efb1f23b.jpg

Thanks look good! I have been tossing up the idea of powder coating mine or wrapping them in vinyl (trying it myself). I currently have them plastidipped but I would like a finish that has more gloss.

Doesn't look bad Ryan! Did you use the Avery Dennison vinyl that you recommended from Metrostyling? I ordered a 5'x1' sheet in 2 different shades from them and think the one you suggested matches more closely than the other one I ordered. Got any more pics from closer up and from the sides?

Fwiw, the vinyl guy that did mine said if he ever did another one, he would charge double what he charged me. This was his first 3rd gen Tundra bumper. Took him almost 3 hours. He has been doing vinyl for 6-7 years and own his own vinyl wrap business.

You might be very good at it and it come out just fine, but I wanted to give you fair warning, it is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I stood there and watched the whole thing. At the end of the day, I could have spent $75 on vinyl and struggled with it, or pay this guy $150 and guarantee I would be driving away with either nice looking wrap job or my $150. I chose to let someone else fiddle with it. Either way, best of luck to you if you decide to tackle it yourself. I am happy with the results.

I paid a vinyl wrap shop to do it. And yes, he used the Avery wrap. After watching him do it, I am glad I didn't spend the $75 or so to get the vinyl. I would have probably wasted it all. He even got almost done with the driver's side and had to scrap the piece and start over. He is very experienced vinyl guy too. It was a tough one. A lot of angles, crevices, and whatnot.
I will get some more pics tomorrow. It ended up being two pieces of vinyl for each side. He seamed it.

Yeah, there's no way I'd even think to try this by myself. So, you say it's not a 100% match ... what would you say looks off? Is it slightly lighter in color? Look forward to seeing more pics, Thanks!

Yes, slightly lighter. Looks better in natural light. In the shop under fluorescent lights, it was more obvious.41ddef37c2a552165d8593de36ea4373_fc5486ea1e35d4ec914603db63a917423fc40095.jpg

Yeah, that's what I thought I saw when I placed my sheet up against the bumper. That's why I ordered a sheet of the Avery Dennison Quicksilver metallic too ... it unfortunately looks like there's alittle bit of a blue in it.

Honestly, the vinyl guy had a sample catalog from both Avery and 3M which contained every color and sheen each company has available, and the color I went with is the closest you will come to matching Silver Sky Metallic. Any closer and it would need to be painted, unfortunately.

Ouch, I was hoping to avoid having to paint them ...

Well, post some more pics and maybe you'll convince me to still do the wrap

I will try to do that when I get home from work. Honestly, when it is time to redo them, I will probably just have the whole bumper line-x'd. I am not paying $300 for a partial match. But I have 3-5 years to think about it.

Yeah, I know that feeling ... I was hoping for a slightly better match. I also found that depending on the light conditions the vinyl was alittle bit lighter as you can see from my pictures ...

it looked close on this one

then just alittle off on this one

Great advice. I have tinted windows before and installed paint protection film, all of which was time consuming and a pain. I understand why they charge so much to do the work they do. I saved a ton of money by doing the paint protection film on my truck myself, so I would probably give it a try depending on cost of the product and labor at my local shop. Much easier to pay someone though!

The extra pictures I promised. Sorry it took so long, had a 36 hour stomach bug that started Monday kept me down, then had to leave work early yesterday because my 3yr old son busted his head open. Took him to the ER and he got some staples. Handled it like a champ and you can't even tell he was hurt now. Needless to say, it has been a crap week. Lol.

Like was mentioned above, different light changes the degree of match or mismatch. End of the day, my painted rear bumper looks a little darker than the body sometimes, and lighter sometimes. So I am not going to sweat it. Chrome is gone, and that is what matters.

It was basically aboit double the cost of materials to pay someone to provide their own material and the labor. YMMV.

Looks like this was a tuff week for a few of us (my oldest son got robbed of $6,500 on Monday, then had a tire blow out on his Subaru on Wednesday ... Thank God he wasn't hurt either time). Sorry to hear about your week. Most important, hope your Son heals up quickly.

I've been to a couple custom painters and both said painting them would not be advised. They said that the paint would be too brittle and not last very long due to the chrome surface. The suggestion was a powder coat.
I thought about wrapping mine but from what it sounds like you guys are saying it might be a tough one.
Do we know anyone that has painted them and how they turned out?

Man, you guys are killing me ! :annoyed: Just when I think I've got it figured out, I read more of these posts !

Ok, I plasti dipped my bumpers ends black last weekend. Matched the center bumper pretty well and I was happy with the look. Then after 3 days of rain, water got behind the plasti dip seam between the bumper and the fog light trim and pulled away.

So, I gave up with that and decided I want something more permanant. After some research, I decided to go with vinyl wrap in MGM from TCTWRAPS.....but after reading this, I'll save the $$$$. If a vinyl guy has problems covering these, I'll most certainly waste some material....lol

Honestly, now I'm just thinking of taking the ends off, sanding them down, spraying self etching primer and using spray liner. I blacked out my running boards this way and they turned out fantastic.

Thanks for the info and hope your boys are well!

Here is the look with black plastic dipped bumper ends and the spray bed liner running boards.

    Here is the seperation...

I'm OK with black bumpers on MGM. I think color matching looks better on lighter colors.

Check out dipyourcar.com. They have a repair kit with solvent that will make that raised area smooth and you can spray over it again. They also have an adhesion promoter I believe.

I had also thought about dipping my bumper, but I was going to remove the fog light housing and parking sensors to do it.

Yes sir, I saw that....thank you.

I just think I want something a little more permanent and durable. I actually like the texture of the spray bed liner. It's not as rough as Line X. I'm also trying not to break the bank...(wifey over my shoulder, lol) All other options are fairly expensive. Black OEM replacement ends, color matched ends, vinyl wrapping, etc.

Is it on the plastic parts as well? I am considering this at some point as well and was wondering if I should pull the plastic off or just spray over it.

    No, just the stainless part.....

I tried removing the plastic pads and successfully removed 2. The plastic threads combined with the very cheap nuts didn't allow me to remove them all. Some of the threads were smashed during factory install. I just decided to mask them and paint.
