What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Man this sucks. Where is the oily stuff coming from around your starter area? I seem to have that oily spot but not as bad. I can see it through the manifold openings on mine when shining a light up in there.

I’d help you do this job if you were closer. Never done one before, but it doesn’t seem difficult. Just time consuming.

That's a tough call. Something I read in the FSM a while back is worth sharing. If you have some warpage going on you might need new heads. At that point I'm not sure if it makes sense to replace the heads or just get a used engine. I have no idea what caused your issue. Maybe you can get lucky with just new gaskets.

 

I find it odd that there's no spec to mill the heads flat for rebuild/refurb.
Since these engines are timed with a belt (opposed to chain), it should stand to reason that the tiny amount milled off to re-flat a head prior to new head gasket install would be easily compensated with the tbelt tensioner(s).

 

What are we supposed to decipher from those hieroglyphics? I'm pretty well versed in PHM picture drawing but you got me on that one.

Based on your build goals, I don't think you'd be happy with a Tacoma just due to size. If I were in your position, I'd buy a small beater car and then rebuild. I like owning and working on older vehicles so I will always have two just so one can be down for a week if needed and I can still get to work.

My offer is still on the table to come down on a Saturday or two and help wrench. I'm no master mechanic, but I do have the beloved Milwaukee impact wrench so that makes me cool

 

That spots usually dark because of all the crud that gets buried back there over time

My son has a new hobby which was great for me. He just finished detailing my truck and applied a ceramic coating. He did about a 10 step process and suppose to keep this shine for years. Will see. Made my 3 year old 1300.00 cheap paint job look fantastic.

 

Went to the local “pick your part” today to find a roof rack for my bed cap.

decided to swing by the last tundra there... definitely “picked apart.”

Thanks guys for the replies, I love hearing all them. Makes this feel like one big ole' community when a fellow Tundra goes down. The plan is to rebuild the engine maybe even better! To do this I'll have to get another part-time job serving at a fancy restaurant (good tips) using my friend's car to commute until I can afford a $1500ish beater. Thankfully my main job is such a short commute I scooter to work! Once making more money I'll start buying the parts and restoring/rebuilding this engine to the best of my abilities. I would definitely post pics and maybe make a thread.

Good points. My professional mechanic contact recommends taking the heads and stuff to a machine shop to have them resurfaced. That way surfaces are completely flat. He doesn't think the head will be warped since I caught the overheating pretty quickly, it's just a precaution.

It might have been one of those in-the-moment resolutions. You know, when you're so fed up and are like, "That's it!" I even wrote the whole seller listing, detailing all the upgrades, replacements, and problems. A Tacoma would still be a great truck, ultimately my build plan is to convert a small (6x12 or 7x12) cargo trailer into a tiny home, and a Tacoma could pull it. The Tundra camper is/was only a practice run to figure out what materials work, and make mistakes which hopefully wouldn't translate into the main tiny house build. Definitely getting a beater, and I definitely might call upon your (and your Milwaukee's) help when I get deep into that engine! Appreciate the offer.

Man I’ve never seen one leak like that. Except when the o ring for the water pump is damaged for the bypass pipe, but that leak doesn’t appear to be that

 

Yeah it's amazing how "These trucks last forever" until they don't. I seem to have bad luck despite all my efforts. I wondered if it was the water pump too just leaking coolant down that valley, but me and my friend carefully applied/installed the gaskets which came with the Denso kit only 20K ago.

 

Tis still a man made machine and destine for failure at some point.

 

Well these injector O-rings have reached their end anyway.


Anyone running Dirty Deeds remanufactured injectors besides @Professional Hand Model and noticing any difference? Pricey but maybe worth it for the rebuild?

 

I realize that we have different engines, but I have the V6 variant 12 hole petrol splurters.

My trucks pep and throttle response improved. Before the new injectors I would give it gas, and it would rev, and then go.

Now it revs, and goes at the same time. I can't say if that's due to the 12 holes, or just clean injectors.

Either way, I would say its a worthwhile job if you have a lot of miles like me.

 

I am wondering which Toyota parts dealership is least expensive. The engine overhaul gasket kit at the Cool Springs one is over $100 cheaper even with shipping, but it looks like they're closed.

 

McGeorge is another low priced online dealer

 

Are you doing it in the truck or out of the truck/ there is a top end kit and a complete kit. The top end kit comes with everything for head gasket replacement, complete kit is every gasket for the engine

 

Mine were not that bad at 160kish miles, but were definitely going south.

 

Try to find a local dealer that participates in Toyotas new Online Purchasing Programme. Local pick up is free. Prices are as low as these other places everyone talks about around here. Shipping free. I understand if you aren’t close to anything.

 

I get all my stuff from Stevinsons Toyota online now. They tend to be a bit higher than McGeorge or Cool Springs, but no shipping makes the total cost less

Yep, that's what I mentioned earlier. Who makes the upgraded connecting rods, do you know? That's a great idea.

I am going to pull the engine out and do the complete kit. While some of these parts likely do last almost forever, here's the list so far:

•Piston rings
•Head bolts
•Motor mounts
•Water pump
•Crankshaft bearings
•Idler and tensioner bearings
•DD injectors
•Oil pump?

I don't have a garage, but I also don't have an HOA, so what do you guys think of getting something like this to work on the engine in once it's on a stand:


I'd need to put something down for the floor like OSB. Mr Buddy heater for heat. Run an extension cord for power/lights. Have a little table and bench. Main concern would be theft.
