Transmission cooler or not Thread

I'm wondering if there are any '19-'21 Tundras out there with temp induced transmission failures? Is this a theoretical problem or do we have documented failures to begin setting precedent?

Alternatively, are there '19-'21's out there towing heavy/regularly in high temp conditions that are doing ok?

Are we doing alot of hand wringing about what might happen, but not what has happened? Like many here, I'm hoping to drive my truck for years into the future. If putting a trans cooler on there is necessary, I'll do it.

The main thing that bothers me about this is that my window sticker says that there is a transmission cooler. That seems like it will come back to bite Toyota if there are transmission failures down the road. I guess it would have to be proven that it was a high temp. failure.

 

No one on this forum has reported any failures yet. A couple of high temp alarms but not as many as you might expect from all the chatter. So it could be it's just too early or only people not on this forum are having failures or everything is fine.

Google soy based wiring. I knew about it but until I witnessed I had no idea the cancer it causes. Truth be told I dont know how the car was running. The insulation crumbles off. Rodent like it also if you live in a rural area. Mostly start with O2 sensors since they are low to ground and eat there way up. Look at it this way if you are ever stranded do to an overheated transmission you can eat the insulation off your wire until rescued, lol!!

You do have a cooler. Toyota is well covered. They never claimed it was effective.

The 4.6 ran this exact setup for years and surpise.......it didn’t blow up

As some have stated, you are going to be fine if you don’t tow much or are hauling around something light like a small utility trailer. The only issue that may arise would be people who are towing at the Tundras max capacity a lot. Even then they still may not have issues until they are out of the warranty

I have been stating this from the first thread arose regarding this subject.

Toyota, they did NOT lie (on pre-MY21 stickers). Puck is a heater/cooler based off differences between ATF and EC temps. Thermodynamics.

Now, the effectiveness of heat exchange is a whole separate subject of course. Is it very effective? eh...

 

Keep in mind they changed the verbiage on the sticker of the 2021 , they no longer mention anything regarding cooler

No they didn't they pissed off a bunch of people who love the tundra for being reliable, not skimping on components to save a penny on their end. legally they can kiss my ass.


Edit: And you can't even have a toyota dealership install a cooler, so you have to spend $820 and do it yourself and possibly void the warranty? Complete b.s.

I mean I plan on doing the cooler here shortly, but I think everyone is in agreement that this is total b.s. on toyota's end and i guarantee even if there is any number of people that have transmission issues due to lack of a true cooler, they won't do any type of recall and or transmission repair on their dime.

 

Wouldn't they have to pay for the repairs if the transmission fails inside the warranty period?

Also, I thought they did a bunch of 1st gen frame rust repairs outside of the warranty period. Any reason to think they wouldn't do the same here IF a bunch of transmissions end up failing due to high temperatures?

 

Yes, inside the warranty, but I'm in the group that is thinking the removal of the cooler will only be a problem for people who plan on using their trucks for over 200,000 miles. I just think overall this is going to shorten the life of the trans regardless of if you tow or not.

The frame rust problem was a bit different, IIRC because it was a problem for almost every single truck in those years. My boss had a tacoma from that gen and it rusted to shit, but never got it repaired because he was the second owner and didn't get the paperwork from toyota saying they would cover it. He sold it with 250k miles with a rotted frame for a new tundra.

 

Agreed , trust me I am beyond pissed on this especially because I tow , least they can do is give the option of installing an external cooler

 

Yes, I'd gladly pay the money and have it professionally installed for warranty purposes, because lets be honest, if we install this cooler and have problems down the line, what a total pain in the ass it will be to take it off again to take into the dealership. To me, the whole point of a tundra is reliability, to enjoy it and work on it as little as possible outside of mods. I don't want to be spending my time adding things that should have been there in the first place, if i wanted to that I would have bought a domestic brand.

 

Hi, new to the forum, but not new to Toyota trucks. Looking to update my 2007 Tundra, that is why I joined to get info on newer Tundras but, this cooler or lack of it, is a disappointment.
Don't feel like spending $50K, and then spend more money, and time, on something that I think it should come with the truck.

Yes, but if you read the description it says...

Description: Sequoia. 4.6L. 5.7L, "without" towing package. Our window stickers clearly state Tow package. There for we should have an external cooler. JMO!

 

I think the only point where u can nail Toyota on is that everyone got the puck with or without Towing package. Look at the diagram I included. But here is the big difference - previous to 2019 -Trucks with the towing package got the Puck (because the part was called an AtF warmer) AND the radiator mounted ATF cooler. So if I bought the truck for towing with a towing package it should be properly equipped. I'm sure if Toyota would have said you know what guys we don't need a clear coat. The truck has its paint and it will last until the warranty is up maybe a bit longer. Of course if you drive it around in the sun much it might degrade way faster but that's on you. Come on people really??

 

Thats a really old diagram for the a750, which was in 07-09 tundras. Here is a more current one.

 

So sitting at the Dealership (again) and I can confirm that the 2021 Tundras didn't get an aux ATF cooler either. Looked at a 21 Luna Green TRD Pro and nada. So again 1st Picture 2020 my puck +2 lines other pics 2018 puck with 2 lines + 2 Aux/supplemental lines going to ATF cooler.

So unless someone can explain to me how an ATF W-A-R-M-E-R in 2018 "magically" turns into an ATF Warmer/C-O-O-L-E-R with the same part# in 2020 I am at a loss.

 

It's not magic. When the engine coolant is warmer than the transmission fluid it warms the transmission fluid hence "warmer". When the transmission fluid gets warmer than the engine coolant it cools the transmission fluid hence "cooler". Unfortunately it's not going to be able too cool the transmission fluid to below the engine coolant temp. Without it the transmission temps would get very hot, but with the liquid/liquid heat exchanger it won't cool off the fluid like the older auxillary air/liquid heat exchangers would.

 

Exactly so when I bought a truck with a tow package to tow my trailer in the mountains I wanted that auxiliary transmission cooler. That's the whole reason for this thread. 2019+ tundras are a product that performs worse than it used to when it comes to towing.

 

So sell your truck and buy something else.
