I’m fighting some mice in my detached garage. The little shits have figured out how to eat the peanut butter out of the traps without setting them off. I tried Decon but they won’t touch it. I need to step up my game. My truck smells like peppermint because they were getting in it somehow and stealing tissues. Now when I get in the truck, my sinuses clear right out.

What’s my next line of defense? I’m one step away from calling a Pest Control company to try and get em but I feel like I can win this fight.

I don’t have a cat so that’s not an option. Thanks in advance for your help!

We had some dogs who were shelter in a detached garage for years. I started noticing the dog food bags had holes in them where the rats were getting to the food. This lead to cleaning out the garage and I found the nest, on of the most unpleasant things I've ever done. You gotta find the food source that's attracting them, find the nest, generally not to far from where the food is.

After that you're still going to have to either get some higher level of predator, cat, coyote, hawk... or call the man...

What I have found is to tweak the mouse traps just a little bit, that little tab that the wire goes onto bend almost straight up and down, this way it’s literally a hair trigger, all they got to do is just breathe on that and they will set it off, when they come from the factory that is way too much of an angle so I straighten it up, give that a try

I have good luck with these. Super easy to set but importantly they dont seem to be able to get the peanut butter without setting it off like they do w the wood ones.

I even use in place without bait where they frequent but I dont want to attract, eg in my riding mower that I park under my deck outside.

We also use these in cabin up in canada where mice take hold from being vacant 10 months of the year.

Can get at home depot etc.

For traps and peanut butter I started typing a small piece of string around the trigger. Then when I put the peanut butter on the trigger it seems to soak into the string a little and that increased my catch rate. I also have better luck using the ones with the old school copper colored metal trigger rather that the ones with the big plastic trigger. I hear the buck traps mentioned above but have not tried them.

The best thing I have done to control them it to use homemade PVC bait stations I saw on an Extension Office webpage around the perimeter of the building. I fill it with bait blocks and just check it periodically. At first they would go through the bait kinda quick until the population dropped off. Now I check them about every two months. There is a lot of bait options and some are better about accidental poisoning of non-target pets. I use Kaput mouse blocks. Warfarin.

    I hate mice.

I saw them at the hardware store but I was a bit skeptical. I’ll try anything at this point so it will add this to the other options you guys are putting out there.

5 gallon bucket does work, lots of sunflower seeds though.

    Sticky traps work good too.

Try mixing borax and peanut butter and leave little peanut butter balls out. No need to rely on trap and you’ll be seeing dead mice scattered everywhere. Have an ant trap at my place and finding more dead mice and couple rats than ants
