What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I needed a 4ft cheater and more PB blast than I've ever used to break those bolts loose.

 

I'm disappointed with that video. I wanted to actually see him go at the bolts and then actually lift the bed off.

 

I've used this method a few times now for a complete trans fluid exchange.

As long as penetrating fluid is used, and a momba for easiest path, or a breaker bar with cheater pipe they should come out smoove as long as they don't look like mine did.

 

Same. Took me a few hours and a ton of elbow grease to remove all 12 bolts

 

We had to undo the passenger side of my bed and lift it to replace.my shocks because the told bolt was seized. Luckily the bed bolts just came off, no lube and no breaker. Then again we used and impact come to think of it lol

 

I didn't have an impact when I did the bed on the Tacoma. I had my mechanic free up the 6 bed bolts & the (four?) bumper bolts with his gun. Couple'a bucks well spent. Finally buying an impact gun was couple'a bucks better spent.

I assume the Tundra bed removal gotcha is the same - lifting off the bed you gotta lift around / watch out for the filler neck. That was the thing you could break - the filler neck.

 

@NUDRAT Looks like the taco filler neck is a solid piece with small hose at the bottom to tank?


My filler neck, and I assume all FGTs look like this. More soft hose than hard line.

I think there is 4 bolts inside the gas door for the plastic trim thing. There are two 12 mm bolts on the plate by frame on fill neck. Those bolt to the bed.

Here's how i took my bed off.

 

filler necks differ.. like my reg cab, its bolted to the frame. dont need to touch it to remove the bed. just the 4 bolts on the bed for the shroud.. that its

 

Wow, that's awesome. You removed the bed just to get at the shock bolts!

My rear shock nuts up top are pretty rusted frozen too. I may just give in and take it into a shop to have them removed, then install the new ones myself.

 

I see you snapped the bolt closest to the driver. How did you end up backing that out?

We didnt remove it completely. Just unbolted it and stuck some blocks in there to hold it out of the way

 

Hey guys, when I bought my progressive AAL and installed it I removed my bottom overload spring. Im thinking of getting new suspension soon and want to add the overload springs back in for more lift, but the bolt that the bump stop goes over had to be cut to fit the bump stop. So now if i were to add the overload spring back in that bolt would probably be too short now. Any idea where I can order just that bolt for my leaf spring pack? Thanks guys!

You can see the rust piles where the bed bolts disintegrated...

I drilled through a few with a left handed drill bit using lots of heat, and penetrant. No dice with that.

Tried extractors. No love. Finally, I bit the bullet.




I actually ended up removing 5 of them. This is the only one that was "Ok." Removing the opposite side to this one sure was fun.

I went out, bought locknuts, and washers. Used that when I reinstalled the bed.

Been MIA as work is INSANE but finally got my truck back today. Didn't leave my friends shop until late so I'll get some full pics tomorrow. Still need to do a little work with the plate flip, 7pin install and a few other misc items.

Got an 05 a few weeks ago. Just installed a remote start alarm yesterday.

Now I can warm her up or cool her down without having to go out.

Im just eyeing new suspension upgrades as I want to fit 33s eventually. What are some options for getting about a 2 inch lift. Im seeing all these companies with adjustable height shocks but wouldnt that be giving the spring preload? But then im thinking getting a beefier spring for that lift but then im not sure if it will be too much lift or if the spring wont get compressed enough. So now Im just getting frustrated with the whole process. Anyone have any input on suspension combinations for gaining about 2 inches up front?

ex. For Bilstein 6112s they recommend no more than 1 inch for Access cab 4x4 on the adjustable clip for height, which is like the 3rd slot or so. Does that mean id need a beefier spring for the extra 1 inch? But which spring would i buy to achieve that? Or icon has 0-2.5 inch adjustment but is there a position that they dont recommend like Bilstein does? And again, then you are just adding preload. Now im just getting confused! OME has a 3" lift shock and if i take the less beefy spring will that give me around 2" So many questions right now...

I paid a little extra for them to assemble them for me because I wasn't confident I'd get it right if I did it myself.

I have no plans on going to a bigger wheel with my lil ole power train, so I have no suggestions there.

 

Made an account at the Toyota Owners portal. Holy crap the previous owner of this truck spent some money at the dealership.
In the last 30k miles: Timing belt, drive belt, water pump, thermostat, steering rack, OEN front shocks, lower ball joints, taillight wiring harness, exhaust including manifolds, radiators, frame, most of the hard brake lines replaced, the list goes on.

Pretty stoked to have a list of what's been done as I go forward with this truck. Glad I saw someone in the forum mention the portal, highly recommended!

I’ve always wanted to pick up welding skills. Don’t have the cash flow to get the gear to justify it just yet.

 

What are your goals with the truck? The main options without going for high end performance are Bilstein with stock coils, Bilstein with lifted coils, eibach, arb or dobinsons.

1st gen offroad has tons of options with differing lift heights. Toytec is also a great resource

 

Looking back to around last March time frame when I scored on this smeegsliss OEM Toy Muffler for $150. It had been sitting in storage (brand new) since 2005 as the prior owner put brand straight pipes on and stored this away.

I remember sitting in the truck listening to radio how we were all going to die. Nobody was wearing masks because we were told not needed. Still haven’t worn one since then except for one occasion. OMG!
