Dumping my 2019 Platinum - Maybe?

No problems. The screen quality has almost a fuzzy look to it vs the Ram uconnect was like looking at an hdtv. I was very impressed though with the stock sound system in the ram and it wasn’t even the higher end alpine you can order

 

I had a 2015 Ram I bought new and traded after a couple of years. It was in the shop several times for the check engine light- once the EGR valve, but it was usually some stupid software update. I can't imagine I'll ever purchase another Ram.

 

The egr valve went bad on mine after day 4 of owning the truck. The service guy said it was a common issue

 

I really only have one thing to say about Ram pickups... Fiat.

East killer, I get great information from this site regardless of brands. Detailing, tonneau covers, you name it. I have more fun on here than any other site and very involved in the food section, haha.

I also am still a believer the Tundra is the best 1/2 ton made in the market. I personally might have got rid of mine, but we still own 2 other Toyota products and that is not changing.

Not to talk about personal life's or what we do, but I control all things financial for my company. I made the switch to one of the construction industries after 10+ years in the petroleum industry. I now have say and purchase equipment and vehicles.....

Ww have 2 Tacoma's our survey crews use. With all the robotics and tech, we are running out of space in those. Our guys love those little trucks! With that being said, I will be buying 2 Tundras to replace those Tacomas with. Tacomas will be part runner trucks for the shop.

Looking at the most basic 4wd SR or SR5 within 300 miles as these trucks take a beating. They are in mud and loaded down.

I skipped from page 1 to the end so maybe this was already addressed...what does the payload capacity have to do with what you're towing? They're two different things.

 

Tongue weight of the trailer is payload.

 

Due to payload capacity, you will never really be able to reach the full towing capacity of the truck.

My Tundra is rated for 9,300 lbs. of towing capacity. The GVWR is 7,200 pounds. The truck in stock for with me in it, weighs 6,410 pounds. I only had 790 pounds left of payload for passengers, luggage, and the hitch weight.

When I was looking at trailers. Once you get into let's say a 24 foot model, with dry weight of 5,500 pounds, you are already looking at hitch weight of about 700 pounds once you put a battery, propane, and a WDH on the trailer. While I come no where near the rated 9,300 pounds of towing, I am maxed out already due to tongue weight on a 5,500 pound trailer. I do not even have room for passengers or cargo with that trailer. That is towing "legally". Only way I can legally make the payload rating of 7,200 pounds legally, with my family in the truck is a very small 18 foot single axle trailer. It is what it is.

We have scales at work and I checked 3 travel trailers with people I work with. All 3 were not very large and I was over weight or right at 7,200 pounds with just me.

I did confirm with my insurance company that if I was in an accident, if they found me overweight they would not cover any damage if they found me overweight.

This is not necessarily a Tundra problem. Once you get into a crew cab/short bed higher end model with the big 3 you run out of payload way before you ever sniff the full rated towing capacity. It is just a numbers game w wry one plays to bang their chest saying they can tow 11,000 pounds in a 1/2 ton. It requires a very basic 2wd model that no one really buys and added towing packages to be able to get the payload close.


With the Chevy 2500 HD, I am at 3,650 payload and 14,500 towing. I will never get close to the 14,500, but with the extra 2,500 of payload I can now tow a 24 foot travel trailer or so legally.

 

Probably doesn’t matter now, but Chevy can disable Active Fuel Managment at the dealer.

 

At least on the 6.6l gas, it does not have any active fuel management of any kind. It is a straight naturally aspirated V8 and 6-speed tranny. Just like the Tundra.

1/2 ton models are a different story though.

 

Aha. Thanks for the detailed explanation. That pretty much tells me that everyone I see at the campgound is probably over payload. It's either half tons with 25 footers or 3/4 tons with monster 5th wheels.

And then I have a couple buddies who tow 25-30 foot with a 1 ton using a ball...LOL.

In their defense, they tow cattle and dozers for work.

 

You are right. I would say about 1/3 of 1/2 tons are over towing payload capacity honestly, quite possibly higher. Not saying the truck can't pull it or stop it, they just technically are not "legal".

Here in our area we are a very large camping location. All the lakes and you have Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, and Smoky Mountains. There are hundreds of camp grounds and thousands of trucks pulling trailers every day. It is crazy what I see.

 

Same here. I can be at carter caves, cave run lake. greenbo lake, and grayson lake all in 40 minutes or less. I was mooching off some friends at greenbo just last night.

 

The Rams system is outstanding by far the best in the industry.

 

Well yeah, but what about the truck?

 

I had a F250 and jumped to the Tundra. Night and day difference. I actually had the ride on the F250 pretty good with Rancho XL 9000 adjustable shocks but the Ford steering was ROUGH. 1900's dated straight axle. You were wise to go GM and independent front suspension. The turning radius was also horrific in F250. Interior was no where as refined as Tundra (it was a Lariat I have a Limited Tundra) always creaks and cracks in the Ford zero in the Tundra. It had tons of options I never ever used mostly for fear of breaking. Adjustable pedals you set once, climate control was +/- 10 degrees, ambient lighting you could change color, used once, auto wiping wipers never really worked well (not as well as my previous 2002 Envoy), I didn't have the LED headlights and they were marginal at best. Had 4 recalls in 18 months, two cameras fogged over in 18 months, 39.5" tailgate created dangerous situations. If your towing 100% of time, it was great, if not allot of compromises to have that built in capacity.

If the math says you need a bigger truck....you need a bigger truck.
You could buy a trailer more suited to the Tundra's capacities...then go on a "Trailer Site" and blame the trailers you really want for being so heavy.

 

Driving an ATV up 9' ramps wasn't ever a good feeling. Trying to haul 80lb concrete bags up tailgate step wasn't fun. Again 39.5" high tailgate. Even getting off tailgate was a jump.

 

That makes sense. I'm not sure why I was thinking depth or something.

 

I will say this. These new trucks are very high. Not just the Ford but my Chevy is also. I am 6'3" and the top of the bed is at my chest. I can not reach over the side of the bed and touch tomhe floor of the bed. If you are grabbing anything in the bed, you have to use the steps in the bumper or in front of rear wheels.

 

The new 2020 fords are lowered from the 2017-2019 models by about 2-3 inches I think. Probably had enough people complaining about the stock height making the bed almost unusable

 

I have to admit I wish I had done more research on the Tundra in terms of payload.. Part of going from my Tacoma was that I wanted to be able to throw some real weight in the back or tow a real trailer without worry. You know actual truck stuff . I was a bit disappointed when I went to buy my camper an after I told the sales guy I had a Tundra the reaction an impression I got was basically .Great you just wiped about half the options off the table... Now I have to find something your truck can handle let me see if I have anything at all available... Oh well I'm happy with it otherwise . Just didn't realize how low it was rated...

 

Its extremely difficult to have great load carry capacity and a smooth comfortable ride. Couple that with Reliability I am not sure it possible.

 

Because it was a ram/FCA.

 

Ours was the exact opposite.... I did my research and knew with the Tundra I had to keep it to about 20' model and 5,000 or less to be able to tow and carry the family and all our gear. I went into 3 rv dealers and told them we were looking at a Winnebago 2086. Asked what we were using it for? Take the family camping and there is 4 of us. They immediately said we would be miserable in that size. They then asked us what kind of truck we have and told the Tundra. They all said we would be 100% fine and started showing us 26 feet and up models and 7,000 pounds as that truck will pull it and not even break a sweat.

I asked them if they would sign a waiver knowing they sold us a trailer that was well over weight and payload capacity, they wanted nothing to do with that, haha.

 

agreed for the most part..... As much as I hate to admit it, this new 2500 HD rides about as good as the Tundra. Only at low speeds under 30 MPH is it stiffer. On the highway it is as good or probably a little better. I absolutely loved my Tundra! But the ride is very comparable in the HD.
