Battery/Ignition problem on 2019 Platinum

So I messed up and left the acc switch on in my truck last night and the bed lights and a couple of other accessories were on all night so the stock battery discharged down to about 25%. Hooked up a battery charger and got it up to 12.54 Volts. Now, everything works inside the cab, but the engine does not start. I get a flashing battery icon on the voltage gauge and a constant check engine light in the display area. Is there something I am missing that would cause the engine to not turnover? I guess the battery could be toast, but it did re-charge to 12.54 Volts...

I did read in the manual that if battery is disconnected you have to tilt the sunroof up and back down prior to starting. I tried that and no bueno.

 

Yeah, this battery is 18 months old. I'm just going to yank it and buy a new one tomorrow. I needed to go bail out my diesel Bobcat UTV at the local Bobcat dealer this afternoon, but looks like that won't happen until Monday now.

It’s under warranty why not have the dealership install a new one just to make sure that’s the reason. You can always buy a new one after that.

I hear you, but I don't want another crappy battery or to waste my time at the dealership. I'll know tomorrow if it is something else after the new battery is installed. I went through the fusebox and didn't see any failures in there.

 

I went through 9 of these batteries in an 18 month time span. They ultimately discounted a redtop 50% because they couldn't figure out why I kept killing the batteries... Even brought some Engineers from Toyota HQ... Ultimately the redtops suffered the same fate, but that was the desert heat.....

Welp... there is more to the story, lol.. I killed 3 more red tops, 1 was assasinated by AAA they crossed the poles and fried it, before I moved to the yellow top. I just killed 2 over the last 3 years as I moved out of Reno to NorCal, so I'm still running a yellow top. So in total 13 years of ownership, 14 batteries... I recently waranteed my last yellow top which is battery #14 for me... There may be more that I don't remember, these I remember because I was left stranded and had to call AAA to save the day, except for the 1 time...

Edit: BTW, mine is an 07, so maybe that's why?? but if you're having similar problems, then there are still gremlins

haven't learned my lesson yet, I'll probably upgrade to a Costco brand one since they are backed by a 5 year warranty...

 

I was recently looking for a battery for a small sedan and Costco warranty is dropped to 3 years now. I even asked the guy there and he said it used to be 42 months but now only 36 months.

Wal-Mart has a 5 years warranty for the same battery and the same price.

 

really?? I was just looking at their stuff about 2 months ago... I'll have to look into it.

 

Costco never had 5 years warranty as long as I remember. It was 42 months and now dropped to 3 years.

 

Maybe disconnect and reconnect the battery and try again.

If the battery is charged and not damaged, the car should start!

 

My bad, you're right... I was looking at tires too, and they have a free 5 year road hazard warranty on their tires... That's where my info came from... Just saw their battery warranty and it is 36 month now in bold letters, assuming denoting the change.....

 

did you ever figure out what is going on? This is not normal. In general you get shorter battery life in hot places but not this short!

 

That is what is confusing to me and why I checked the fuse's. Only other thing it could be is a starter issue or the computer, but the starter wouldn't throw a red flashing battery warning I would think. I'll try reconnecting it in the morning and see if it does anything.

 

Yes, I chalk it up to heat mainly.. There was some electrical gremlins at first because the vehicle was damaged prior to purchase, so IDK exactly what happened.. but lately my batteries have been good, the last one I replaced under warranty because my starter died and I was ruling out the cheapest options first before I gave in... But 4 years ago my battery gauge was dancing all around when my yellow top went, so I've technically seen it all...

 

I would leave it disconnected for 10-15 minutes just in case.

Since you are waiting till morning, Recharge the battery while disconnected.

 

My wife did same to her lexus lx 570 couple of months ago, left some lights on and i checked voltage next morning to be exactly 2.2 volts i thought battery is toasted since it is abt 3 years old AAA battery. I had lexus put brand new lexus battery in suv and 6 months later she left lights on and drained so called AAA and they took that battery and placed theor cheap AAA brand battery. long story short, this time when it read 2.2 v i bought black and decker battery charger from home depot and left it to charge overnight, put it in when voltage was reading around 13 v but soon as i push button to crank it just dropped voltages back to 2 volts, i connected again and let it charge for 24 hrs, i did not know exactly how to charge with that charger but somehow figured and it worked, voltage was reading i believe 14 or so put it in suv and it cranked right up. Its been couple of months or more and still going strong.
So before you buy new battery try recharging for 24 hrs with bug battery charger

 

Ill check it with a meter in the morning. It was reading 12.54 when I disconnected it. When I put it on the charger I didn't check the voltage on my meter since the charger was reading 25%.

The reason I'm not dicking around with the dealer is because I have a deer lease in Mexico and need to be able to get out of there with the truck. Once you go in, you need to go out with the truck... unless you want to pay a hefty tax beforehand and leave it there. I'm leaving a UTV there for the 2 month deer season so that me and the only other guy on the lease can basically carpool in and out. I have to pay a tax on the UTV to leave it there. But the tax on the truck will be 4X what the UTV tax will be.

In other words, I'm getting a new battery either way... LOL

 

Were you charging at 2 Amp rate or 6 Amp?

 

It's definitely the battery that is the problem on my truck. After I had taken it off the charrger, it was still at 12.5 V. When I hooked it back up it was reading 30% on the charger after 3 hours sitting disconnected. It's toast.

 

Did you try jump starting it from another vehicle just to see if it starts that way?
Also it sounds simple, but make sure your battery clamps/connections are clean.

If you need reliability, I'd avoid the AGM batteries.

Very happy with my Interstate MTP-27F.
It doesn't need a monthly charge like the AGMs do.

I read the thread and that is not what I am looking for at all. I may go with the Interstate also. There is an Interstate store just a few miles from where I live. I just want reliability. I have 3 vehicles and a Harley. My Tundra was bought in Feb/2019... it only has 12K miles. I definitely don't want a battery that needs babying care. Thanks!
