Hello, everyone! I am new to the forum and purchased my first Tundra this past weekend.

After speaking with folks at BAKFlip, I was told the MX4 (448409T) would work with my model. However, it does not. My understanding is usually you lower OE bed track system. However, the trail has storage built into the bed so the track system can’t be lowered. I would just remove track system b/c I don’t really need it. Unfortunately, the plastic of the storage system is about 1/4 inch thick and goes behind the metal on the side rails. As such, the clamps of the MX4 cannot go behind the beds side rail to clamp the MX4 to the bed rail. So, removing the track system will not help.

Am I missing something? If not, any suggestions for a different low profile hard tonneau that will work?

I suppose I could cut notches into the plastic where the clamps would go. I guess I could do the same for the deck rail sections if I wanted to keep it on.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

I have a 21 trail edition too. I looked to see if there was a low profile tonneau that would work with the tool boxes, but didn't find any where the bracket wouldn't conflict with the boxes. The lowest profile one i saw was the OEM from Toyota, but they are pretty pricey and i wasn't 100% sure they would work either.

I ended up removing the tool boxes, which was actually pretty easy to do. i needed/wanted the tonneau much more than the boxes. I have some pics in a thread i started in the tonneau section of the forum. The boxes come out by removing the cargo rail, the rear tie down, and a single bolt inside the box near the cab.

Not yet, but maybe soon. I have a buddy who wants them, but has a Tacoma. I'm thinking they will fit, but if not, they will go up for sale.

I had my heart set on those tool boxes but after laying eyes on them at the dealer, meh. I think the swing out style would serve better.

Anyone know if these trail boxes would fit with a bed extender?

I'm not sure how the bed extender attaches to the interior of the bed of the truck, but I doubt it. The boxes run from the back side of the cab all the way to the tailgate. The slope back on a 45 degree angle about 8" from the tailgate and are attached to the truck bed with the cargo tie down at the rear of the bed.

You can see on the box with the snowflake (this is the insulated box) that they angle back to attach to the bed side. You can see the 2 holes towards the bottom of the picture where the cargo hook screws go through the tool box to attach it to the bed.

I just traded my 19 for a 2021 and it has the boxes also. Think I'm just going to remove them for my cover. . .the brackets for the rough country cover I have are too long and hit the boxes. . Thought about cutting them but not even sure if the boxes will open with the cover installed.

So did you have to remove the deck rail system too in addition to notching out the plastic? I just got my trail edition a few days ago. The dealership ordered me a soft trifold they insisted will work. I’m a bit concerned now that won’t be the case. He said it might limit access to the box but didn’t say I would have an issue getting it on. I may call them tomorrow and see what cover it is so I can look up the installation. Shame it doesn’t seem like the made those boxes with the tonneau installation in mind.

I did remove the rails, but have full access to the boxes. Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of the rails and like the hooks that shared a link to in the above post. I have plenty of places to anchor ties as a result of using them.

Check the build link in my signature.
It looks to me like the curved shape at the tailgate end of the trail boxes is specifically shaped to accommodate the factory bed extender when in the "tucked in" position. But I could be wrong - I've never actually seen the bed extender OR the trail boxes in person to compare.

    Hey all,
I too have a 21 Trail edition and have a cover that works great. The one I found that worked, because it didn't have the long clamps, was the Truxedo Pro X15 soft roll up cover. Excellent quality canvas cover that you have to open your tailgate to open the cover.....gives added security.

Thanks! I’d love to see how it mounts and clearance for the boxes, if you wouldn’t mind. Based on the installation instructions I found, it seems they use the familiar clamp approach to hold down their rails.
