I went with the crewmax because my kids are getting big. My 15 yr old is taller than I am. I don't do a lot of hauling so the shorter box is fine with me.

Exactly how big is the crewmax box with the tailgate closed, 5 feet 6 inches?

Nice. I could stretch out lengthwise in it. :D

I'm curious if I could do that across the back seats too...

As others have stated, I wanted to put a toolbox in and still have a bed, my kids are small so not real worried about them. Not to mention when you lift a DC and put biggers tires under them they look way better than a crewmax lifted.

I had a double cab for 12 years. I hated it but got an incredible price on it and needed a truck for work. I couldn’t wait to get rid of it but I’m cheap and couldn’t replace it for the price and miles.

Now I have a Crew Max and absolutely love it. Having that space in back is great. It opens up my options and I no longer have to pass up being the driver for road trips or trips in town. I can still haul material in the bed but can keep my tools secure without swimming in bags and bins.

When we head up to the mountains I can shove two very large people and some bags in the back and have the gear in the bed. Or if it’s just two of us we can throw the bags in the cab and keep the bed for coolers, bikes... whatever.

And then there is the back window. That alone is worth getting the Crew Max. I have it down most of the time, weather permitting. I ended up not getting a hard shell topper because of it. But I did get a Softopper... which is another thread entirely.

I pretentiously shake my head when I hear people going back and forth between the two. If it is nothing but a work truck and you regularly haul large stuff, I get it but if you also use it for personal at all don’t limit yourself.

    Signed,
Someone who has a new Crew Max and wants to bring it in the house so he can stare at it from his bed.

I got a DC because I needed bed space over cab space. My growing like a weed 12 year old has plenty of space in the DC and the DC is only 2 1/2" shorter than my '07 F150 crew cab I had.
The amount of space in the back cab area of a CM is insane though. I do wish the Tundra came in a CM with 6.5 bed.

CM is a girly minivan? That's funny... your mom never complains about the extra space in the back seat.

Joking aside, after having 3 trucks with 6.5 ft beds (2 DC's and a RCSB) I had my reservations about the shorter bed. We never had - and won't have - any kids. So we don't need a people hauler. I've been pleasantly surprised by the extra versatility of the CM. Getting things (not just people) in the back of the cab is much easier - I sometimes found the narrower back opening of the DC's a PITA to get things back there. Not an issue with CM. I haven't missed the extra bed space yet - I'm sure a day will come, but there will be so many more days the CM makes my life easier. And after being spoiled by the back window in our 4Runner, I had to have that on my next truck!

All that said, I'm at a different stage of life now. Honestly, when I needed the most truck I had the least (an ext.cab V8 Dakota). I hauled and towed more stuff with that little truck than I ever have since. I really could have used a RC 8' bed at the time... but those days are gone, at least for now. So for the time being it's CM for me, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. :yay:

I’d choose double cab if I could go back in time a couple years. But I love my crewmax nonetheless. I think the usefulness of the longer bed would be better for me than the big cab, but I like the lines and look of the crewmax better.

I got a CM only bc I have kids. But I didn’t realize the DC lacked the roll down window. So I’m really glad to have the CM.

Wonder why Toyota doesn’t put the window in DCs? Wonder why no other truck maker has such a great window?

Well I think OP has a clear picture now which is best, lol.

I love my DC but there is a lot of truth to times I stuffed the crap out of the inside so I could lock it while bed had tons of room remaining. Big enough for people imo but factoring cargo space is important consideration.

When I bought my DC seven years ago bed space was much more a necessity. Now we're at a point in our lives where trying around with 4 grandkids I'm wondering if I shouldn't be thinking Sequoia with 3rd row seating

Ive never seen so many people obsessed with a rear window that rolls down.
I get it though, theyre neat. My sister’s 4Runner has it. Having my hair blow into my mouth until the right window roll-down combo was acquired was cool.

But lemme tell ya, you havent experienced luxury unless your a 5’3” chick climbing in the back seat to unlatch the flipper and slide the middle glass open in a lumber yard to put j channel through it with three employees staring at your ass:rofl:

Double cab. Cuz it provides 6.5' of usable pickup truck bed. You know: pickup truck >>>> for doing TRUCK THINGS. Hauling stuff.

YES. If I can find the right DC with an 8' bed I'll be adding that to the fleet.

Seems like a lot of folks here have argued within a couple of hairs for a Sequoia.

And now a word from my lawyer >>> :crapstorm:

I went with the crewmax. I like the looks of both to be honest. Anything that I would want to haul in a DC bed (lumber, stone, brick, bikes, kayaks) I can easily haul in a CM bed as well. Despite what some say, the CM is fully capable of truck stuff. Will my tailgate be down when I use my bed? Sure, sometimes. But I have hauled 5 bikes (3 adult size, 2 kid size) or all our camping gear plus two kayaks or 8ft lumber with my tailgate up. For big loads of 8ft and for 12 ft + lumber, I keep the tailgate down.

Some CM folk act like the DC backseat is worthless, and some DC folk act like the CM bed is worthless, but it’s only 1ft difference. No, I can’t shut my tailgate on dirt bikes, but I also don’t have dirt bikes.

I play music for a living. I need to take lots of gear to work that I can lock up and keep climate controlled. I can fit 5-8 guitars, an amp or two, a pedalboard, and other studio gear in the CM backseat easily. And that’s without putting the seat bottoms up.

Everyones situation is unique.....for me i wanted a 4 door half ton pickup with an 8ft bed....choices were ford or toyota. Well, not much of a choice LOL our kids have plenty of room in the DC...hell I would have loved to have had that much room as a lil shaver, we got shoved in the back seats of 90's dodge dakotas and dodge rams when i was growing up

I mean, it comes down to personal needs. For me/us (our family), I can count the # of times I've said "I need an extra foot of bed space" pretty much never (especially considering I've got a 14' trailer), whereas I've said "I need extra back seat space" a freakin' TON of times. Additionally, resale value tends to be a bit higher (although with the Tundra I'm not sure that makes a huge difference).

The other factor - and I'm not sure if this is a thing with the Tundra, though it sure was with the F150 - is that the extended cab tended to vibrate/shake a bit more when hitting bumps/imperfections in the road, due to the length of the bed, length of the driveshaft (on the F150 I believe it was just a longer driveshaft instead of two short ones supported in the middle by a carrier bearing, I think it's called).

Plus - and let's be honest, this is the MOST important factor - wife was for a CrewMax after sitting in the back of a DC. LOL

The back of the cm cab is straight up and down. The back of the cab on the dc is curved so no way for the back window to go down

I have 2 kids and a dog, so interior space is key. Also, neither a 5.5 ft bed, nor a 6.5 foot bed is of much use when hauling 12' lumber or a 16' kayak. So a CM with a rack is the solution.

    Not enough....
Congratulations! A 6.5' bed is great, but sometimes more interior space is invaluable. I'm sure you'll love it!
