Got home last night at 1:30am from a 240 mile road trip to pick it up..... More details to come if anyone cares, haha. Still in the tundra family though as I am currently trying to buy 2 SR or SR5 for my work for our employees.

I know it is a Tundra site that is probably the best forum I am on, but as truck enthusiasts ask any questions. Hard to compare to a 1/2 ton Tundra, but a detailed write-up of good and bad as far as features go will be coming later on.

 

Congrats on the new truck. How is the ride compared to a Tundra in terms of noise and compliance?

 

So I hate to say it, but it is very comparable to the Tundra. In fact in some situations I am not for sure if it is not better to be perfectly honest. For a 3/4 ton it is very comfortable. So let me try to explain.....

1. Lets say you hit some potholes or rough pavement at normal or even highway speeds. The front end absorbs it very well. You feel it in the rear end more. It has a lot stiffer springs, shocks in the rear compared to the Tundra. That is a little bit rougher.

2. On a normal paved road or concrete that is in good shape, I am not for sure if it is not a little better. You do not really feel the road as much. I don't want to say driving on clouds, but you feel like it absorbs and floating a little bit more.

3. Another example is not rough potholes, but more of a dip in the road. Think of the transition sometimes in an overpass/bridge and there is that dip. After you hit the dip, it is soft and you can feel the truck bouce a couple times after. The Tundra would not give you the couple of real light bounces after going over the same dip. Hard to explain but if anyone has ever rode in an old Cadillac or Lincoln it sort of feels like that. You go over the dip and you lightly bounce a little a few times. Hard to explain, but you get the point.

Steering- Steering is similar to Tundra. Really tight and a very nice feel. I would say it takes a little more force to turn the wheel on the 2500hd. The Tundra turns a little more easily. I think I feel a little bit more of the road and the bumps in the Tundra. You do not feel any bumps in the road in the steering with the 2500hd. Does require a little bit more input. Turning radius is not terrible, but the Tundra still turns alittle tighter and can maneuver in close quarters better.

I am not going to lie, these new 2500hd's are quite large. When getting in they are much taller than the Tundra. I did not tneed the running boards on it, you need them on this truck. My wife and kids for sure needs them. First time I got out of it at the rest stop, I fell on my face. I stepped out and nothing was there. Even I use the steps and I am 6'3".

I hope this helps. In general, front of the truck the same, rear is a little stiffer.

 

Noise- I hate to say it but the 2500hd is quieter hands down. The engine, road noise everything. When cruising at lower speeds 35 and below you can't really tell it is on. You can hear it at idle, but the cab noise is quite a bit less. This is one thing there is truly no comparison. The 2500hd is quieter in across the board in all situations to be brutally honest.....

As crazy as it sounds, I liked that about the Tundra. I always knew I was driving a truck in the Tundra! Sometimes I like audble feedback of the road or engine.

 

I do not believe so. I will double check the build sheet. If this truck has it, it still requires a little more force than the Tundra.

 

I will keep that in mind. So far through 400 miles truck tabs consistently 185-190 on trans temp. Does not matter if it is stop and go or on the highway going up the 4% incline for 6 miles. It does not budge. Once a trailer is hooked we will see.

 

So I had some more time driving the truck in mixed conditions. To work, picked up kids, soccer practice, dinner at Waffle House, Target, Party City, and the liquor store, haha. After more time I think the Tindra rides better and is a smoother at lower speeds. At highway speeds as in 70 or so, I think the 2500hd is more comfortable. I would prefer the 2500hd on long trips.

Wive's Take-

She likes the outside look of the 2500hd better. However she prefers the Tundra Platinum on the inside. Seat is more con for table to her and power seats where the 2500hd is a manual seat in trim I have. The back seat in the 2 are comparable, I believe the Tundra back seat was more cushiony and more comfortable. I am impartial on the seat. To me both trucks are about the same as far as comfort goes in seats. I will give the edge to the Tundra in the seat department.

Stereo- Within 2 miles down the road, my wife said this sounds much better than our Tundra and 4Runner. She is right. At only 30% volume in the 2500hd, it is louder than the Platinum at Max volume. It sounds much better and clearer. Has better Bass and is much better overall. Talking on the phone on Bluetooth is much more clearer and crisp. If I bought an upgraded stereo from James, I would have been happy if it sounded like the 2500hd LT in the Tundra. This is just a basic mid grade system. Crazy to think what the Bose system in the LTZ and High Country would sound like. Tim undead is not even in the same universe as these. Now I see why people complain.

Nothing the Tundra community does not know already, but after owning another vehicle I didn't realize how terrible the JBL Premium system really is. I always thought it was pretty good, but now I do see why people complain. This is where Toyota really needs to step it up 2022 remodel!!!!

 

That's interesting because the guys on the GM forums hate the non-Bose stereo and have marginally less disdain for the Bose system.

I assume that means you have the non-high definition backup camera. Any issues with clarity, especially in low light?

 

Agreed that you can't seem to please anyone these days. I love music but I'll listen to it through any system, regardless of how terrible it is. I really don't mind the stock system in my truck; I just turn it up louder.

I'm not sure how the HDs are packaged but the problem with the current GM 1500s is you have to decide between a backup camera that's just a blinding white blur at night and a sliding rear window that leaks.

 

Not sure, maybe they are coming from a higher end Ford or Ram that complain? All I can compare it to is the Tundra Platinum and the stereo is much much better in the 2500hd LT. I did not mind the Tundra though as I do not blast it or turn it up very high.

The backup camera seems on par with the Tundra. It is pretty clear. Maybe a little more panoramic and can see wider? I am pretty sure it is not HD but it is quite good. At night it is as clear as day. The sensors in the 2500hd seem to be more accurate. My Tundra would struggle if it was a fence post or something skinny that was directly behind the truck. It did not always pick it up. Picked up everything on the corners of the rear bumper, but it did not like right in the middle of the bumper as much. The 2500hd picks up everything. I would still call it a draw though. Nothing really gained in the 2500hd.

 

As far as some of the options, I am not 100% of everything to the T. These are the things I was looking for. Anything else did not matter as much or make and break:

1. Crew Cab, LT, Black
2. Leather Seats
3. 4x4

Once you want leather in an LT, you have to get the all-star package and Convenience II package pretty much. If they have leather they are all mostly the same. GM has a lot more optional additions and those change from vehicle to vehicle. Some come with 5th wheel installed, etc...

So some of the features are great, but not make or break for me. This may help on what comes with this truck. Here is pictures of the window stickers.

 

I can add to the radio comparison. The ram with 8.4” uconnect was far superior in terms of screen quality, stereo sound, and talking on the phone vs both my tundra and my current f250 that has sync3

 

What do you think of the Ford sync3? Any problems with it?
