Really wish you could do both, I need my swing arm for my camping setup but would definitely like to have the better clearance for off road. Still not use to the length of the tundra after years in an 04 Tacoma haha

The extension of the riser actually works great with my FWC too. It’s usable as a step. A little grip tape and I think it’ll be good. I prefer it all around over the swing.

Oh yeah you’re the guy I was talking to about the FWC! Haha so you have plenty of room to get in and out with that riser extender? I just usually like to swing out the rack and setup some chairs/outdoor rug outside the doorway.

Im usually solo, but with the adjustability of the one-up and it being a little farther out is a game changer for me. I’m also gonna take off the yak racks for overhead clearance. Couldnt go anywhere off-road without the swing out dragging or the rack catching branches. But you see the type of trails I may be inappropriately on? 9FA82D0B-9E6C-4455-BB84-34A503120B89.jpgE33D136E-846A-40E7-9FA1-ED765475E32D.jpg

Just found this thread. From my trip to Utah last month. Fork mounts screwed into rivnuts put into the bed. Allows me to pack them in tight and still have room for the camping gear.

Oh nothing inappropriate at all! I went to some far out places here in CO in my 04 taco camper setup and plan to do the same with the tundra. Developed campgrounds are for schmucks haha Yeah I have a 1up as well, it’s great. Maybe I’ll try the riser piece too.

Went with the Yakima locking fork mount because it’s super functional, adjustable, and $75

Just bought an entire level mountain bike from Dick's Sporting Goods. I haven't ridden a bike in years and wanted to get back into it. Figured a $400 bike would be a good start and budget friendly to see if I enjoy it and can out grow the newly purchased bike. Looking forward to taking it for a spin today on some old tank trails on the base I'm at.

It'll serve you well until you want something more capable. The bike stores make you feel like you need a $5k bike to get out and ride, and you simply don't.

You don’t need a $5k bike until you’ve had one  I worked at a college town bike shop forever. Got a lot of folks started on $800-$1500 bikes. Good enough components to actually keep adjusted and hold up to trail riding. First upgrade? Just like a Tundra... tires.

So I just sold my Kuat NV 2 bike rack to a friend in need. Was looking at the single bike 1-up. Will the tailgate open with the 1-up installed without the extension? With the Kuat I could open the tailgate with no issue. Thanks.

the Kuat is great. I have 4 bikes in tow and while heavy, it clears the tailgate fine once it is folded down all the way. I might get the Kuat Pivot to clear access to tailgate because 4 bikes there is a pita

I decided to give this solution a try....

    https://rcimetalworks.com/product/bed-rack-bike-mount/

Thought it was worth a try because of the price (much cheaper than a bike rack) and I have this beautiful RCI rack already so I may as well use it. The downfall of it is having to remove the bikes wheel. The upside is I will be able to carry my bike and then put my dual sport moto on the motorcycle hitch rack. So can bring both on trips, which is pretty sweet.

1up or die. Seriously. I've had the Kuat, Yakima, and Thule racks and the 1up still beats em every time. The thing that has helped me is since I do so much overlanding and off roading in my truck, I have definitely backed into a tree or two when having bikes on the back, and the 1up is the only rack that isn't almost all plastic parts that break under duress. I've bent a couple arms but they still work great, I also did manage to bend one of the tracks that locks the arms into place and it was a simple 9 dollar piece from 1up to fix it. 100% aluminum design is clutch.

I pair it with the Yakima swing arm for my camper setup, which I prefer over the Kuat as the Kuat swingarm actually lowers your overall height of your rack for worse clearance.

I got the Kuat swing away (first version) and it works great with my Saris Superclamp 2. It does hang low so I'm just going to spend $2k and lift the GX a couple inches instead of spending $700 on a 1 Up. My next rack will be a 1 up.

CCB6FA56-90F1-4CE9-9987-FCC7C2FE5DBB.jpg Picked up a new to me Cannondale hybrid for bike paths, camp sites, and neighborhood riding. Really nice alloy frame, good disc brakes, Very little previous use, and lightweight. Wish the head tube was standard size so I could put a rigid fork on, and I’m pretty sure those weird wheels are gonna fail, but we shall see. Already added new grips and shimano xt pedals from the parts collection. And carbon bottle cages because  it’s gonna be perfect for any American holiday booze cruise! PBR in both cages.

Nice. I once found a good deal on a rigid single speed, rode it on a local rooty trail once and put a $900 Fox fork on it next day.

Haha, I have the full squish for that. I’m thinking this is gonna be more my city bike, gravel roads and neighborhood bike so I’m not super stoked with the rst fork. Though it does have compression adjustment.

nice thread! It's a great day when you get to take your Tundra and bike to meet up with your buddy at the trails on a cool fall day! Sure I ended up with a busted tire but after 700 miles of trails without a flat I was well overdue! I've been taking it easy breaking in the new gears on the Tundra. @andnyleswillriot yes love the 1UP! Was fortunate to have picked up my used Santa Cruz used and the 1UP last year back when all things biking were easier finds. The 1UP builds out to handle 4 bikes, or in our case one of the trays holds a Weehoo bike trailer for one of the kids. When I'm just running the 2 bike setup, if I put the MTB on the rear tray, I can still open the tailgate....carefully.....making sure the pedal is up so the tailgate doesn't crash into it.

good to know. May have to check that out, going from my 04 tacoma to my 16 tundra I wouldn't mind it sit a bit higher but we'll see if it's any higher than the yakima. Doesn't look like it at a glance tho.

update after watching product videos: I do like how the new pivot's handle goes downward instead of upward like the yakima. I always found that hindering the yakima one when you have the tailgate down, in which you have to put the tailgate up to unlatch it.

She's a beaut! I always love the old hightower design, that frame was almost a whole pound lighter than the new design. Yeah the swingarm piece is clutch for tailgate issues, give it a shot!

My opinion on the swing away types for off-roading is, that's a lot of crap hanging off the rear for any serious trails. A riser is one option but it needs to be very sturdy as it will need to be able to support the entire truck as it will be the first to hit the ground on departure. This 1st generation Kuat hangs low. Might get away with a 6" riser on the truck but 2" riser on the GX is max to open the gate. It would help slightly but any higher, and I might as well use a 6" and leave the swing away off. The exhaust is close but haven't burt the pain off it yet.
