I have read the manual and understand all the shifting procedures written in the handbook. My question is, can I bring the truck to a complete stop and shift from 2WD directly into 4L or do I need to shift from 2WD to 4H while moving then come to a complete stop and shift from 4H to 4L?

My understanding is it likely won't shift correctly from 2Hi to 4Hi if you're stopped and that if it doesn't go into 4Hi, it won't go into 4Lo.

good question. I would think once stopped in neutral you could go from 2wd to 4Lo. Looking forward to experts view point

I've always gone 4 high then stopped, put it in neutral and then 4 lo. I don't think it works well to go straight to 4 lo. This reminds me I need to throw mine in 4 hi for a little bit to loosen it up.

When going from 2hi-4hi it will work both moving and stopped completely, but the splined shafts and collars in the transfer case and the front differential need to align for this to happen. I can't recall off the top of my head, but either the transfer case or the front differential needs to complete it's "shift" before the other will "shift". If the shafts and collars aren't aligned when stopped, moving the steering wheel L/R will sometimes sort this. If that doesn't work, allowing the vehicle to roll slightly will facilitate alignment and engagement.

To go from 4hi-4lo all the above must occur to the satisfaction of the 4WD ECU, and the transmission must be in either Park or Neutral so there isn't any tension on the driveline, and again, sometimes the splined shafts and collars aren't aligned and allowing the vehicle to roll slightly will help.

To return from 4lo-2hi, you may need to reverse the above pausing at 4hi until the ECU is happy.

    Since we’re on this topic...

I typically do my monthly 4WD activation on the freeway, where I’ll go for a bit with no tight curves or turns.

I usually merge on, stay in the slow lane, and activate 4Hi at about 45mph, then speed up to about 55.

it seems to do this just fine... but am I hurting anything by engaging it at this speed?

It would be my opinion and belief that you are not hurting anything.

Agreed. If I recall correctly, the manual says you can engage 4Hi at any speed below about 60 mph.

I've done it @ 60 mph multiple times on dreaded east I-70 snowpack in Colorado. So how fast can ya actually go once in 4hi? I've been 85 myself :anonymous:

The truck will keep itself from being hurt. If you try to shift into 4wd or out (same with Low range) it'll either flash or beep at you. There's no limit to the speed you can drive in 4hi, just a limit to when the truck will let it engage.

I once had a truck with levers to change gear ratios, and a lever to change drive axles. It never confused me. now my electronic control package decides, and somehow I am more lost than when I was thinking.

Typically the road conditions requiring 4WD or 4HI are not conducive to high speed driving.
