Well boys, my 2019 Platinum might be hitting the road. I am a huge Toyota fan and absolutely love it, but there are a couple reasons. Some of these I have been thinking about for a while and sorry for the long post.....

    1. Transmission- Obviously a hot topic right now. I am not one of the alarmist that think the temps are out of line and it can't handle it. I am not too concerned. Bottom line, I am starting to have a few issues... I really have not wanted to say anything but......

The truck has 49,927 miles on it as of today and I have owned it for 23 months. First 15 months were all highway miles. 90 miles per day on the highway to and from work. Took a different job about 8 months ago, now 38 miles/day. I do not tow a lot. Every other weekend, I mow our grandparent's house. I have a 6.5x12 utility trailer (1,000 lbs.) and a John Deere x758 (1,500 lbs.) on it. 2,500 lbs. for 30 miles once every other weekend.

It has been talked about on here, but I am getting a very hard downshift at low speeds. If I am going pretty slow it jerks pretty hard. Started roughly about 40k miles. Last week it jerked so hard it locked up the rear tires while pulling in the driveway for one split second. Even my wife was like, "What the heck was that?"

It also does it at higher speeds. If I am doing lets say 60 and slow down a little to say 45. Once I get on the gas very lightly it is jerking. These problems seem to be getting worse over time.

Went to the dealer yesterday and bought fluid for front/rear diff to rule that out. Last night I put it on the lift at work, changed diff fluid, inspected everything. No big metal pieces in fluid, everything was tight. All yokes, bearings, driveshafts were A-OK. My jerking problem is in the transfer case or transmission, no doubts about it. Fluid change did not help.

I am also getting a popping and binding noise in the front end. Only happens at low speeds with the wheels turned. When the suspension flexes. When I pull into my hilly driveway it does it. For sure not CV's, I think it is coming from the front sway bar.

Payload- When purchased, did not think I would be towing anything or ever we would be looking at campers. Well now we are....

Truck is bone stop except, Line-X Premium bed liner, soft tonneau cover, and running boards. We have scales at work and I have been through the Cat scales. No and if or butts about it truck is 6,400 lbs. with me in it. GVWR is 7,200. That only leaves me with 800 lbs. Throw the wife an kids in it (250), some luggage and coolers (100), and I only have 450 pounds let of payload to tow "legally". I know it can handle more, but I am going to do it legally if the wife and kid are with me. Bottom line, all we can really tow legally is a "stick and in" little single wheel trailer and that is not happening.

Resale- Goes without saying, but used Tundra prices are at all time highs, period.

I am thinking about going back to a 3/4 ton gasser. Chevy preferably.....

    This thread got me thinking....

Some of the reading I’ve been doing the last few weeks regarding the 19+ Tundras and towing has me worried. I was in the market for a reliable truck to tow the 5k lb boat and trailer without issues and having that long term reliability.

Some are saying the new fluid is fine and to get a transmission cooler if need be but the long term implications aren’t really all that apparent yet. Could be fine but could also spell trouble for anyone towing and keeping the vehicle stock.

Your truck is pretty much what I am in the market for but as a 2021.

Well, maybe mine is a fluke and nothing to worry about..... Toyota is about as good as it gets when it comes to knowing what they are doing and reliability. Mine may clank and bang all the way to 400k Miles.

Bottom line, the verdict is still out and until these get more time under them, we will not know.

I still have confidence in Toyota and our 2017 4Runner Limited is simply fantastic!

I wouldn’t look at 3/4 ton gassers expecting better. Chevy has the new unproven 6.6 engine. I had a ram for 1 month and traded it because of issues and now a ford gasser going into the shop after 1 month.

Toyota has been my bread and butter for the past 10 years. Two 4Runner and a Gx470.

I admit I am scared of something new and first year also. But, where our work our western division in the state purchased 3 Chevy 2500hd with the 6.6 gasser when they first came out almost a year ago. They have been nothing but fantastic and the guys absolutely rant and rave about it. They all have about 40k on them hauling crews daily and have been 100% trouble free. We will be switching roughly 5 more from F-350 and F-450 for crews to these gas vehicles in the next 4 months. They are much cheaper up front, and operating costs so far have been much better than the Ford's still time will tell......

I had a 2004 2500HD/Duramax and a 2008 2500HD/Duramax and I admit..... I put 168k miles between them both and did not replace a single thing other than brakes and fluids. I wish I never got rid of one of those trucks years ago.

Hands down, I will be staying with gas this time though.

Entertained a Ram and just could not do it.

With F-250, a gas truck and leather is not real popular and are expensive for whatever reason...... Not a lot out there at all!

Check engine light on day 3 of owning it and was a bad egr valve. Also developed a squeal/chirp that sounded like a squeaky belt from a 30 year old shitbox that was deemed “normal”.

I have not made up my mid, but I have started the process of exploring options with 2 dealers this week. Right now I am looking at 2020 Chevy 2500hd in LT trim. If you add the Convenience Package, Convenience Package II, Z-71 Off-Road, and a few other things, it gets it up to more of the LTZ trim level. This truck would come with more "features" than what my Platinum has. Not real sure that I want more features but it would be nice to have some of the stuff that is on the Chevy in the Tundra.

6.2 due to it being out since 2011 and figured it’d be reliable. Making a pretty audible knock/ticking noise throughout the rpm range that definitely isn’t normal as well as a pretty bad sounding cold start. Will see what the dealer says next week when it goes into the shop.
All Toyota had to do was have a payload of 1,500lbs for the tundra and replacing it would’ve never entered my mind.

I went through Costco auto program, as well as reaching out to a dealer directly. Costco seems to have a strong relationship with GM and sell a lot of vehicles this way. Basically, here is the deal I have so far for a 2020 Chevy 2500hd LT.

    Chevy MSRP - $55,640
    Promotions, Dealer Discounts = $7,640
    Chevy 2500hd Price = $48,000
    Tundra Trade-In = $38,000
    Taxes = $48k - 38k = $10k $10k * 7% of $78 for tags/ licensing. Final taxes = $778.00
    Dealer Fee of $399.00

My final drive out price would be $49,177 for 2020 Chevy 2500hd really well equipped.

Pictures are examples, not the actual truck but look exactly the same in either silver or black.

Towing of 14,500/Payload 3,650 compared to Tundra of 9,300/Payload of 1,200.

The lockup issue may be nothing more than a problem with the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) or the solenoid that controls it.
I'd take it to the dealer and have them look at it.

If the issue is in the transfer case... that might explain some of the other clunky noises you are hearing.

When it downshifts hard, there is absolutely no noise. It will jolt you pretty good. it is not all the time either, but is becoming worse and doing it a little more often.

The clunking noise if hands down in the front end. You can here the binding and popping. Truck tracks dead straight and drives perfectly. It does not happen when you are on flat ground and just turn in normal turning.

If you have the wheel turned and hit a bump it will do it.

The time it does every time is when pulling into my drive way. I will have the wheel turned to the left. My driveway is inclined pretty good. The truck will essentially be flexing pretty good since the front of the truck is on an incline, rear is still on flat street. Does it every single time backing out also.

It is really light, but I can barely feel it in the wheel when it pops.

It truely sounds like metal on metal binding.

I've got a son so it's marginally better....."Old Town Road" sounds fairly decent in the Tundra. lol

I actually somewhat agree. That is the one thing I wish I could sort of change. I use to hate it more though, but still not my favorite.

It sounds like it's stuck in 4wd or the transfer case has an issue.

    I understand the frustration.
I've been a diehard Chevy nut since I knew what a car was.
My last new GM product was a 2013 2500HD/6.0 gasser. Loved the truck but sold it during divorce.
Didn't like the 2014+ trucks and still cant get onboard with the goofy ass design. It looks horrid and I can't believe people actually buy them.
I shouldn't be surprised though... since people bought Pontiac Aztecs, Chevy Citations and AMC Pacers at one time too.

I think the sharpest looking (non-Tundra) trucks out there are the Ford Super Duty series F250/F350's. I was real close to buying one... but the Tundra made way more sense to me.
If I need more cargo capacity I can just add a couple leafs to the rear spring packs.

I just went the other way Ford F250 6.7 diesel to Tundra. Difference is night and day. Only thing F250 does better is pull like a freight train. The harsh ride, straight axle steering feedback (Ford death wobble), non-existent turning radius, forget about parking garages, forget about most drive thru's, cameras fogging over at 18 months, 5 recalls, 1 TPMS sendor, random alerts that go away on their own it was great truck as far as resale value. Mine lived in DPF Regen $3K depreciation over 2.5 years selling to wholesaler probably could got what paid for it from individual ($62500 to $59500). It was enormous and the only way to have was with the ultimate camera system. Bottom line dont buy 250 go 350, 250 is just derated on paper. Those trucks are made for 100% towing on the freeway. Daily drive is a miserable life. You will find a HUGE difference in refinement between the GM/Ford and Toyota.

Oh I towed a 5Klb boat, it was fun going to FLA at 78 mph the whole way, the other 364 days sucked. So again look at how often you tow vs regular driving, I actually ended up parking mine and driving a lexus beater everyday. It became a toy.

It for sure is not stuck in 4wd, I have tested that in dirt and grass. Transfer case is for sure going in/out of 4wd and working as it should. We looked at CV/axles and looked fine and felt fine. Not saying it is not a transfer case, it might be.

However, we spent about 20 minutes last night trying to find it. The were standing beside me last night on both sides of the truck. I had the wheel turned and were going up against a real small berm last night behind our shop. With the windows down, I can hear it and it sounds like it is coming from the front. They thought the same thing as they were by the wheel wells and said it is for sure coming from the front, closer to the drivers side. We put it back up on the lift and looked for any kind of binding/gouging marks and could not find any. I also started the truck and turned the wheel a little but it is smooth as can be while on the lift. It has to be on the ground, suspension somewhat flexing.

I am taking it to the dealer next week for fuel tank and headlight recall and planned on having them look at shifting and binding/popping noise in the front end.

    "Unproven"

It is the same engine with more stroke, it is a VERY proven design.

The only thing that is "Very Proven" with todays GM gas v8's are the Variable displacement Oil pump failures , Active fuel management lifter failures , Direct Injector failures, Oil leaks that never quit . Trust me . GM gas engines aren't what they used to be . Id take a gamble with ford new 7.3L before id try another GM or FCA truck .
