Hi all, I’m seriously considering buying a 2007 Tundra 4x4 double cab (not full double, extended cab) 4.7 v8 with 250k miles for $7500.

it has a leveling kit installed

it apparently has serious vibration problems after 60mph. I’m going to copy paste what seller said:

“No rust. It’s not a perfect truck. The body is in good shape with a few small dents and scratches, the interior is okay but for a tear in the driver seat where you get in and out. The worst thing with the truck is a vibration at about 60 mph. I put a new set of nitto terra grappler at2 on it about 2 years ago, a very expensive set of tires, they only have about 20k miles on them. But I’ve never been able to get them balanced right. I took the truck to my tire guy and we put it on the lift trying to find any issues and we found a u joint with play in it on the drive shaft, replaced that and rebalanced the tires. Still vibrates. After spending 1400 on the tires and 250 on the drive shaft and 40 several times having them rebalanced by several different shops hoping one would get it right I had had enough. It’s still totally drivable and safe, just annoying. I’ve put up with it a long time, but it got worse with the new tires.“

What could be the issue, and how the expensive could that be to repair? I really do want the truck, just not a new money pit.

250k miles means a host of parts in the suspension could be worn beyond limits. Or it could be something as simple as the tire balance, or bent wheels, bad hub/bearings. With a higher mileage vehicle, I would suggest taking in into a trusted shop to have them look everything over. That may cost you $100 but could save you big money if there are things worn out that need replacing.

That said, in my experience, most shimmy or vibration issues in the front have usually been due to improper tire balance. When you say vibration, is it only in the front and steering wheel or do you feel it in the seat- so the whole truck is shaking?

I haven't test driven this yet because it is 4 hours away. Seller says vibration comes from the seat. He said it has vibrated since new and old wheels would catch mud and grime inside of them and make the truck vibrate, and it got worse with the new wheels installed 2 years ago. He says he's never been able to get the wheels balanced right.

For the price, do you think it makes sense to get this inspected and if repair is under $1k, purchase? I'm hoping to get a truck that lasts a couple hundred thousand more miles with proper maintenance. The seller is also the original owner.

That’s bullshit. Mud and grime CAN cause out of balance wheels, but not to the point it is perpetually there. If the wheels won’t balance there is something else going on.

Is it worth it? You have to answer that. Not knowing your budget it’s difficult to give advice. Feeling it in the seat makes me think it’s driveline related in some way. Personally, unless I was real in love with the truck I’d probably keep looking.

Great price... I also own a 2007 and had a vibration problem, most noticible in a rattling noise in the dash and the plastic trim in the shifter trim, changing to less aggressive tires seemed to help (was not a balance issue as same tires had been rebalanced). I'm also from the Pacific NW... photo of mine was uploaded today in the new member area... for that price I'd scoop it if in good shape/no rust.

I've got an '07 with 253k and it's got a little front end wobble at hwy speeds. I chalk it up to original shocks, springs, etc. Let go of the steering wheel and it dances back & forth a tad. Not serious vibrations though...

The steering wheel wobble is just to keep you awake on long trips (not that we can take any with this small arse fuel tank, we're forever stopping to refuel)... lol

Why the hell haven’t you changed the shocks in 250k miles?

Well I bought the truck at 188k so don't look down on me too bad. And trust me, I'd love new 6112s up front but ya know.....life & stuff.

I certainly understand life. You can replace shocks a lot cheaper than what 6112 cost you. Buy some cheap OEM takeoffs. I’m not sure how you can stand to drive it.

If you have vibrations under the seat area, I would check the carrier bearing. Most people will look at the U joints and miss the bearing. At that mileage that bearing is probably shot, not the bearing itself, but the rubber that holds it. The purpose of it is to reduce vibrations, and when it starts to go you will start feeling more and more vibration in the middle of the cab as it gets worse. Have it checked it's sounds like the problem.

    1) Bought with 225k miles on it, a Westin bullnose bumper, and OEM tundra steps 2) Current Mileage 238k Mods: 1) Dirty Deeds BA Mufflers 8 inch with resonator (as of Feb 2021) - Had the 10 inch with resonator - Prefer the 10 inch without resonator - deeper sound hear it more in the cab 2.) Ranch Hand Summit Front Bumper/Guard 3) Ranch Hand Summit Bumper 4) Billstein 5100s all around 5) TRD front and rear sway bars 6.) Rough Country wheel to wheel steps 7) Pioneer 8400 NEX Wireless ApplePlay 8) Backup Camera: e-raptor 9) LED white lights replaced in headlights, fog lights, inside cabin, and exterior lights 10) Linex (unbranded by Central Texas Truck Coatings) 11) OEM Toyota side panels and generic panel on tailgate Maintenance/Repairs: 1) Valve covers, belt tensioner, alternator belt - $415 2) Evaporation fuel canister and filter replacment $1547 *This was a Toyota TSB for 07-08 AFAIK. Toyota covered in first 3 years of ownership. Mine failed after 13 years of daily regular driving use. Not bad at all. 3) Pioneer Unit - had to ship to Pioneer to replace Output IC - $45 (shipping) free under 1 year warranty fix 4) Pioneer Unit - Electrical feed back coming through speakers when accelerating. Fix was to check all wiring/tighten up/ make connections good again $42. 5.) Rear passenger door actuator replaced. Part was $287 with tax on ebay from Toyota dealer free shipping. 6.) Rack and Pinion, tow mirrors, shocks install, lifetime alignment - $1884.36
before I bought my tundra with 225k miles I had it inspected by a master certified ASE and certified in stuctural. They will visually check everything out and check the computer modules. No suspension or vibration issues knock on wood over a year later.

Make sure your canister charcoal filter and fuel liine kit, a 3 piece, setup is good. I’m guessing it’s probably dirty due to offroading and for the age.i had mine replaced after my check engine light came on. Mechanic told me very common in these 2nd gens early years due to a design flaw that Toyota would fix in first 3 years. Offroaders would wesr the parts out fast. So my parts lasted 13 years but it was $1500 to replace. I have a pic of the in voice in one of my posts.

Make sure valve covers are good too. About $425+ at least to replace a normal maintenance thing.

my truck was $12k at a dealer out the door. That price your seller is really low and good but yeah get it checked out by a master ase pro and structure. If it checks out good I would go for it probably as long as you remove those tires and replace them with something else that were used regularly by discount tire or firestone. Vibration issue is usually unbalanced tires.

You gotta make the call about buying or not but it usually higher miles means more maintenance repairs sooner. I’ve put about $2k in my truck in maintenance. I don’t regret it for a minute. Best vehicle I’ve owned. Consider stories of ford and chevy owners bringing their trucks even new
Ones into the shop over and over for repairs. A lot say f it and go with a tundra and don’t look back.

FWIW I have fixed this issue on 3 different vehicles by replacing the sway bar links.

So he mentioned vibration on the seat of his pants since new, could it be the infamous bed bounce and not really vibration or technically vibration?? I would also go with the inspection... Depending on the highways around the concrete roads make the vibration go buck wild... Just my .02cents.

Hi did you ever figure out what the vibration was? I just bought a 2009 tundra double cab with 248k. I have the same vibration. I had new tires put on and also removed the driveshaft and had 2 u joint replaced, but they said carrier bearing was good. The drive shaft work was done by a company that only does drive shafts.
