so I just bought my Tundra 3 weeks ago, and I love it. One thing I noticed the other day after washing it was that the original owner had the CMC body mount chop done on the truck. I think it was part of 4" fab tech kit that they installed on this truck. I noticed that there was a little bit of rust on the area surrounding the welded plate. Should I be concerned? I don't know if I can have this sanded down and repainted it to get rid of the rust. This truck is a 2016 Platinum. The truck is only 8 months old. Any suggestions on how to remedy this? Thanks. Looks like surface rust. Scuff it and blast some rustoleum on it!

Or maybe some spray on bedliner?

Ok. I'm glad a few people think it's just surface rust. I'm going to take it to a local body shop to get it done.

Nah just knock it out yourself!

Get some metal sandpaper and a can of rustoleum (your choice between types high temp, bedliner, regular, etc) don't forget the primer!
Shouldn't take more than 30 mins of work. And that's with 3 coats of rustoleum.

Surface rust, and an easy DIY job. But definitely do it one way or another and kill it...

Great, thank you for the tip. Does the rustoleum come in a kit? meaning a primer can and then the actual paint or do I have to purchase them separately? I live here in Seattle, where it is always wet and damp. Don't know if one kind (high temp, bedliner, regular, etc..) is better or worse. Thanks guys for everyone's help. I'm new to the site, but I love it. Very helpful and informative dudes in this place.

Have you used this stuff before? do they sell this at a local auto parts or home depot type of store?

Being in Seattle with year round moisture plus road salt, whichever route you go, make sure that you keep an eye on this spot regularly. If you don't have access to a lift get under there on a creeper and look it over every 6mo or so.

Good idea. I will buy the materials this weekend and try to take care of this a.s.a.p. I'm wondering if this rusting is normal, or if the person that did this CMC did a crappy job and did not properly seal it afterwards?

Get some rust converting primer. Then top coat with black. Home Depot has both. You have to let rust converting primer dry for a day or 2. It comes in black or turns black so you may not even need top coat

It's just in a spray can. Very easy to use.

I didn't realize you were in Seattle. I would get the primer and some regular rustoleum (separate cans - primer is a burnt sierra color and rustoleum can be bought in matte black, or its labeled "flat black") scuff the hell out of the area and put one coat of primer and at least 3 coats of rustoleum (don't cake it on or it'll run) and after that's done, get the whole undercarriage with some fluid film. No more rust or worries about rust if you keep it up with fluid film once or twice a year.

Probably didn't seal it enough but then again, Seattle is always wet and you guys salt the roads so it may have been inevitable without keeping up with rust protection maintenance.

I'm watching you tube videos right now on how to apply this POR-15 stuff. Looking to do this, this weekend.

Both of these options are great. I would not go to a body shop and have this done. For under 20.00 you can cure this issues for as long as you own the truck.

Yes, after watching some you tube videos on POR 15 Rust pain protection, I think its pretty simple. Pretty much clean off and remove all of the surface rust with a wire brush. Once all that is gone, I can apply this POR 15 stuff. It doesn't look like it comes with a primer. I guess I just have to put a couple of coats of the stuff.

I put POR 15 on my boat trailer that sits at the harbor and is living in a pretty harsh, salty environment. Great stuff! It's nasty to work with, not difficult, just don't get it on you or anything else unintentionally. And, work in a well ventilated area. Rust-oleum is good too but IMO POR 15 is a bit better.

Por15 doesn't need a primer... It stands for paint over rust... It's freakin Bomb proof, will never come off unless you use an angle grinder.... Ask me how I know...

Top tip...don't get on anything you don't want to be black. Including fingers

Did you use the other two cleaning solutions before applying the POR 15? When watching you tube videos of this, some people used the 2 cleaning spray bottles before using the POR. Some just scrapped the area with a brush to get the surface rust out and then they applied the POR 15. Which method did you use?

Por15 has a "primer" or "prepper" mostly used on unpainted or unrusted metals. Its designed to remove the oil from the steel. If there is rust, itll stick.
Also find the smallest can you can find. It'll be nearly impossible to get the lid off ever again.

I just did a little grinding and sanding, very minimal prep. The better your prep, the better your results though, as with any type of paint job. It's expensive paint. You can expect to pay about $40 a quart. Hopefully you can find a smaller amount.

Does all of this mean get the rust protection? I just bought a 2017 Tundra and I am waffling on getting rust protection and which brand. I'm not the do it yourself fluid film guy so I need it done at a shop.
I know this topic has been beat to death but I will still listen to advice. I live in the northeast with tons of road salt and they have started using liquid salt as well. I'm thinking of using a local shop that does Rust Check..

Based on where you live I would get some protection. But, the original post is a different situation.
