Just another New Guy

Hi all.

We have a 2015 2wd Tundra with tow package. It's just out of the free service and now on my own dime. The Toyota dealership is telling me that I need to have the gear oil and the throttle body serviced and cleaned or the warranty will end. (they have been bugging me for months to have this service done)

Is this true? Why would the diff oil and throttle body need to be serviced so soon? We have not towed anything yet. Wife has a lead foot or rather a racing foot but other wise...

Welcome and congrats. I had my truck serviced by Toyota dealership 5 times and they never mentioned this serviced to me.

 

I can tell you this ToyTracks, I didn't get my differential changed till I was @ 72k. It was clean to the point the tech asked me did I still want to change it. Obliviously I got it changed, asked him to look at magnetic plug, had a tiny metal shaving. To my surprise I was
That's with light towing, 5x10 trailer with lawn equipment and my buddies 20' center console. If you tow a lot then yeah. It's all personal preference.

 

OP, Toyota service intervals do not specify a specific "time" to replace diff fluids. Rather they indicate that they be checked during regular maintenance and replaced when needed.

Most manufacturers support the claim that diff fluid should be changed every 30 to 50,000 miles. But, in all honesty - most cars/trucks go their entire life without a diff fluid change (or one every 90K). With that being said, If you off road every so often, and tow every so often, get it checked every few oil changes and you should be just fine.

My story is pretty similar to @rons23 - before winter hit I did maintenance to avoid having to do anything while it's freezin' - 80k on my truck, no shavings or discoloration... changed it anyway cause I was already in it. But could have easily just kept truckin'. I tow quite a bit between all my toys and trailers for work. No issues so far.

I call it what it is....Up selling. Some dealers will use this sales tactic especially on the elderly blue haired seniors or unknowing soccer Moms or just older ladies sitting in the waiting room have a basic service done. I have watched this countless times. The last thing I witnessed was fuel injector cleaner additive "treatment." $$
When I go in for service I let the "service tech" know exactly what I want done, not what they "reccomend." I have owned Toyota trucks since first 1989 4x4 xtra cab and have learned a few things along the way. I have schooled my wife on this practice and sure enough she experienced it with her Honda Accord V6 EXL. haha..fortunately she knew about Upselling. FWIW.

Welcome. I've never heard of throttle body service in 17 yrs of Tundra ownership. Sounds like they wanna rotate the air in your tires and service your flatulence generator.

I don't want to quote everyone so here goes.

@Tracker: Millage is 40438. Wife drives it to work and it's used for short trips. 99% on road.

@Patriot: I think that is exactly what it might be.

I agree, I think neither of those services need to be done and it's a scare tactic as @Law323 suggested but for the end of warranty.
However I need to make sure before I go shoot my mouth off at the service guy.

My wife always takes it in to have the service done so next time I am going to go with her and get a print out of what they are telling her and supporting documentation why, also why my warranty will end if I don't have it done.

If I get supporting documentation Ill post it here or ill fill you in what transpired.

Never heard of that, either. Have owned 5 Toyotas (two Tundras) and 3 Lexus'. Call other dealerships to see what they say. Bet they don't agree. (Let us know what they say.) Might be time to find another dealership for service. And yes, school the ladies in your life. Had to intervene when I found out wife's Lexus dealership was changing synthetic oil every 5K (instead of 10k). Got a nice credit and an apology.
