Yup. This thread has already gotten political so the end is nigh. USPS is failing because there’s been a concerted effort to inflate internal costs so it will fail. An appointed chief with millions invested in a separate private delivery company— conflict of interest— who would benefit from USPS failing. Which would further the divide between haves and have-nots.

Millions of US citizens depend on the comparatively low-cost mail delivery. We need to preserve and fix it.

USPS tracking may be better than UPS or FedEx. If so, it's only because they get so much more practice!

I’ve been a mailman for 17+ years. The problem with the postal service is that middle management is so severely bloated that it gets in the way of the essential service that we provide. There have been plenty of issues over the years with all the major carriers. UPS, FedEx, USPS...they all have their good days and bad days. I live 10 miles outside a city and UPS will take 3 extra days and a couple of “could not deliver due to natural disaster” here and there. I just have everything sent to my girlfriends work now to avoid any delays from UPS.

Every carrier is completely overwhelmed by Amazon. UPS drivers are working 10-12 hours a day. It’s crazy. I’ve seen USPS routes in my office have 250+ packages a day. On any given day, I can have 150+ packages for my 600 deliveries route. Christmas is gonna be crazy. Especially if we get another stimulus check. I’ve never seen so many people spend their “free” money so quickly.

Sorry for the long post. I understand your frustration. With the new Postmaster General, things are changing but I’m not sure for the better. Only time will tell.

Damn. I guess it all depends on where you live. My fedex and ups services suck here in pacifica, but my USPS is always on point and my packages are always in tact unlike everything I get from ups or fedex. Ups for me is the worst. Damn near every package I get from there is beat to shit and is always late. Fedex is a bit better on being on time but packages come damaged about 50% of the time. When I look at my cameras I see them throwing my packages on my door step cause their too damn lazy to walk an extra two steps. Drives me crazy. My USPS guy always talks to me about my rigs and he likes them a lot so maybe that’s why my packages from him are always on point. I don’t know really, but they definitely do a better job than the other two for me. Also some of my packages from ups since they get thrown all over the place the packages seemed like they opened during shipment and were repackaged or they just tape over the holes that were made during shipping. Now the people that are originally shipping my items like a dumb ass by not packing them safely is another story entirely. Personally I hate shipping anything as technically they all suck. But for me USPS causes me the least amount of grief. Here is my latest from ups. My total chaos adjustable bar set for my GX. Looks great. lol. Sorry about your watch. I’d be pretty scared to ship out any thing expensive like that watch via any service. Good luck. Hope it all works out. 154D416B-F619-4C4D-9F95-3440496F2884.jpg313585B4-C94A-49DA-B725-732EE5182CA4.jpgA8484A67-CA1E-4D0D-B4FA-C61273C131BB.jpg

Our USPS postman can't even understand the THIS SIDE UP symbols on packages! They're also quite rough.

I have known a few mailmen (and women) who were great in every way. But today's USPS seems to be dependent on contractors that look like they just got released from prison or a meth halfway house.

Thank you for being one of the good ones!

The IRS doesn't direct deposit your return? Odd. The Canuckistani Revenue Agency is a bunch of corrupt, money grubbing assholes but at least they're in the 21st century. I do all my tax stuff online and the return is deposited directly in my bank account. No paper forms, no cheques to be lost in the mail.

On topic, as I often order stuff out of the US, I find USPS to be pretty good. They put Canada Post to shame. I've had stuff go from south Texas to the border in 3 days, then take 2 weeks to make it to northern Alberta. For cross border shipping, USPS is the only option unless I want to be ass raped by UPS or FedEx as they charge exorbitant "brokerage" fees. I had an item worth $250 and the US seller shiped by UPS. When I went to pick it up, UPS wanted $200 in brokerage fees. I told them to shove it and send the item back. They said I'd have to pay for that. I replied "not if I refuse to accept delivery, especially since I haven't sign anything yet". That stumped 'em. LOL. I actually won't buy something from the US unless it can be shipped via USPS.

I rely on the USPS for my side gig business, and they have not let me down over the last decade or so. Amazon is wearing them out though, so I expect something will break soon.

I now do all my USPS stuff online using shippo and ordering supplies online. It has made the process so much easier then going to the post office. They do pretty good considering.

I import a bunch of product from Canada, and the only hang up is US Customs and Border Protection as they perform their increasingly demanding job... most items arrive here with green tape, sometimes it's red. The one occasional snafu I experience with the USPS is International mail destined for BC Canada, those envelopes sometimes take a month or so to reach their destination.

Wait. Can “one occasional” and “snafu” be used together? :monocle:

Well it seems from the diverse responses here that local USPS service is varied. Mine is definitely not the best but it seems better than others. Then there are those lucky souls who have a great local Post Office. The problems between Point A and Point B are probably hit or miss depending on the route your package is taking.

Amazon has their own grocery, web server farm, streaming service, etc. I think it's time they started their own delivery service rather than taking over the USPS. Or do a FULL takeover of the USPS. This halfway stuff is just making things worse.

I quit using the mail for bills and taxes about 20 years ago. It can all be done securely on line and I know the payee has received my payment.

I have alot of things delivered, my driveway is steep an can be difficult in the winter . Usually never have an issue with Fed ex or UPS still getting my package to the door. The USPS person however will basically throw it in the snowbank next to the driveway an not even attempt it . Which is exactly what happened the first year I moved in. We ordered some boots. The package " arrived" an we couldn't find it. Checked the GPS info an it wasn't clear if it was at our house or the neighbors. Walked up an down the driveway ect . Days go by we stop down at the post office to ask about it. The driver relayed the message. Yep it's there. Okay well we don't know where. More time goes by one day it finally catches my eye. It was wrapped in a light grey plastic bag tossed off to the side of the driveway mixed in with the snow bank blending in nicely.. Mind you I do keep my driveway clear. It wasn't that they couldn't get up it. It was lazyness. This was long before the Covid excuse. Furthermore if the driver saw it , knew where it was an knew we couldn't find it an reported missing. They drive by every day you think they would stop and move it so it can be found? Nope . Again lazy.. never had anything like this with anyone other then USPS.

No love for the USPS, here. Seems every other delivery is late. Most of the time, it inexplicably spends a couple days in the local distribution center or other way station until it finally makes its way to my local PO where it might make the days delivery. I now opt to pay the extra couple bucks to ship via private carrier whenever possible. I understand the demands COVID has placed on the delivery system, as well as mismanagement at a high level, but if I pay for a premium service, and it gets delayed for over a week - to the point I have to launch a "Where's my package" query, why am I not getting refunded? Anyway - I worked for the government many years ago, I get the bureaucracy, I get the frustration, but get it together already. You'd lose your job or go under if this were the private sector.

My delivery address is a subject of thoughts for many. There’s a 4 digit house number, that confuses all delivery people. :der:
Apparently all delivery people can’t get it right, they are distracted, dyslexic or determined to ruin my day. :annoyed:
Because of this I’m now best friends with the people who have a similar 4 digit address down the street.

My parents live on an "A Avenue" so the folks one block to the south of them tend to get their mail every once in a while when they get a new mail carrier.

I've figured out over time that it largely has squat to do with the USPS itself, and tons to do with the contractors.

From the date we moved into our house in 2008 till about 2015 or so, I *HATED* the local USPS with a white-hot passion. They would do the DUMBEST stuff - e.g., drop a package with electronics in it on the ground IN THE MUD DURING A THUNDERSTORM because "they couldn't fit the package in the mailbox." I realize that yes, technically they're allowed to do so, but literally everywhere else I've lived, they simply leave a slip in the box telling me "Wouldn't fit - pick up @ post office" or something similar. I was this close to socially engineering the addresses of the local post office employees, driving to their house, and throwing THEIR mail on the ground. LOL

Then they hired an all-new crew around 2015, and since then things have been golden - they'll drop stuff on the front porch (60' away from the road), hold it if it's too big, etc. I make sure to give them cookies and all that fun stuff in appreciation on a fairly regular basis. :)

Only if they can make a profit. All ups and FedEx gets delivered by USPS because we are rural and the USPS has to deliver to us. FedEx and UPS don't. Also fuck FedEx...ammo and gun shipments are going "missing" at certain facilities.

I have never had an issue with USPS. Last certified mail I sent was delivered a day before their estimated delivery date. Maybe it's a big city issue:notsure:

As with most large corporations, I receive vastly different service from different letter carriers. When I first moved to the town I live in now, I bought a house on the cheaper side of town. Not necessarily a poor neighborhood - just not the side of town where all the well off people lived. I had an older house that was built in 1905 that had a mailbox installed on the porch. After living there for three years, I decided to buy a new, locking mailbox. After installing it, I noticed I didn't receive any mail for a whole week, I just figured I didn't have any mail - but after another week I went out when I saw the letter carrier and asked if he had any mail for me, and he informed me that they were only allowed to deliver mail to porch mailboxes if that's where they were before the rules changed placing them at the curb - so since I had replaced the mailbox, I needed to move it all the way to the curb. Keep in mind, NO ONE in this neighborhood had curb boxes, every single one was on the porch, and the letter carrier would park at the end of each street, and carry all of the mail to each house. He said he would not be able to deliver any mail to my porch since I removed the original mailbox, so I had to install a box at the curb.

Fast forward to a couple of years ago, and I bought a new house on the nice side of town and saw my neighbor installing a porch mailbox - when he already had a curb box. I told him what I had experienced at my last house, and he told me he had asked the letter carrier and they were cool with it - and in this neighborhood the letter carrier delivers from their truck.

I had the same experience with the garbage collectors in both neighborhoods - vastly different service.

It's kinda 1/2 and 1/2 with us. Most times UPS/FedEx deliver just fine. We did have one time where some new girls in a FedEx truck marked "Inclement weather, will try again tomorrow" for a WEEK and never showed up (I know because I was WFH right by the front window the whole time); and occasionally a DHL truck will show up. Occasionally, it seems like UPS/FedEx will say "Meh, not feeling it" and will pass off packages to USPS.
