Does anyone have any trouble with their brake calipers making a popping sound especially when backing up and turning the steering wheel? It seems to be worse backing up on a hill.

    Nope. I'm in a 2017, 4WD, with 64,500 miles on it.

They told me Tundras have flaws, and they didn't know if it could be fixed or not. They had it 3 days. Needless to say, I raised hell with them and told them no way every Tundra does this. I'm supposed to hear back from them tomorrow.

My 2020 TRD PRO makes an occasional popping sound on slow speed turns.. Just figured the skid plate needed to be tightened up.. I torqued it to spec per the bulletin and it seems to be better but has not disappeared.

If its a single pop that happens once when you are first going, then yes that is normal. If not, then no.

Not a single pop, it pops several times and they mentioned that some pro’s have issues with the skip plate making noise, but I don't have a pro.

And you're 1000% sure it is NOT the anti-lock brake system doing its self calibration?

I put a TRD Pro skid on my 2011 and now I have a creak/pop in the steering/suspension when maneuvering in tight spots with the steering near lock in either/both directions. I've assumed that it was the skid but I've yet actually crawled underneath to verify. One of these days I'll get under there with a pry bar while flexing things a little unless someone else beats me to it. Maybe finding some hard rubber/delrin washers/thin spacers to stuff in somewhere to squelch the sound.

Yes, I'm positive, even the tech said it wasn't the antilock system. He swears it's the break calipers something about the way they are made and a 2mm gap.

For those with the TRD skid plate, it is 100% that. I have a 2020 TRD and started hearing that sound around 10k miles. After doing some research online (and this site) i came across a member who put some one sided foam tape underneath the skid plate where it meets the crossmember. I did that on mine, re-torqued to spec and have no more popping noise. $10 fix and couldn't be happier.

can also confirm the skid causes the creaks/pops while turning or slight inclines like driveways or speedbumps. I also installed the high density foam as mentioned and it's quieter than its ever been. Here's the thread with the fix.

if you don't have a skid plate and vehicle is under warranty, let the dealership figure it out (be stern with them) and make the fix, whatever it may be.

I think I have some old rubber mud flap floating around, I guess that I'll go out and fix this...

Brakes shouldn’t pop when installed correctly. If they say thats the cause and it and can’t be fixed, go to a different dealer. You shouldn’t have that on a new truck.

First test drive since wadding some old mud flap in there. I didn't even realize that it wasn't popping til I was part way through my errands.

Glad I just found this thread, noticed mine doing the same thing recently @ 13k miles. I'll give the foam a try when I get a chance.

Mine has the clank when apllying the breaks in certain situations. Its play from the pad moving in the caliper. Happens first time in reverse and forward. Toyota said it was common on the tundras.
