Get 4wd, when I took a trip last December from CA to AZ it was a nice sunny drive then all of a sudden we saw snow in AZ and icy roads. I was glad to have 4wd, it kept us safe on the icy snowy pavement, 2wd was slipping and sliding even going slow and taking it easy. Get 4wd!

2WD with an Auburn LSD is probably all you will ever need.

When I bought my tundra several years ago I thought I would never need 4wd as well. Well... I was wrong, do yourself a favor and go ahead and get it now. It’s better to have it and not need them to need it and not have it.

    Lots of shenanigans.
So I had a 2WD truck that had a lift and decent all-terrain tires before getting my 4WD Tundra. It kept me out of most sticky situations, but I always regretted buying a 2WD truck. It's worth the extra money for that just-in-case moment.

4wd. I would venture to say 90% of people purchasing a used truck are looking for 4wd. I agree you do not need it, but you never know.....

My work truck is 4WD with a mechanical LSD, the 4WD comes in handy when I am driving through pastures or into the woods to reach a remote well house. My general purpose daily driver truck is 2WD, I drive it on pavement, gravel and flat dirt / grass... I don't drive it in conditions, or to places that increase my odds of getting stuck.

You can buy a new or used 2WD for less than a 4WD, and the maintenance requirement is less with a 2WD.

4x4 - better resale, more capable, not if, but WHEN you ever need it. Confidence level when you do leave pavement or find yourself in slippery situations. Yes, driven properly, a 4x2 can go a LOT of places. But a 4x4 adds a lot of options even if not offroading.

Welcome from Northwestern Pennsylvania. Around here we wonder why anyone would buy a truck or suv that isn't 4wd.

If you never off road and don't drive up in to the mountains in winter save the money and go with 2WD. I have owned several 2WDs and never had any problems. Some had limited slip and some did not. With LS I never had problems on boat ramps. Yes 4wd has better resale but also cost more up front. I never have had a problem selling a 2wd pick up.

It depends. There are more questions that need to be asked/answered to determine what’s best for you. CA is a big state with varied terrain and weather.

    1) What will you use it for? Towing a boat and using boat ramps? Then maybe 4x4. Commuting 3 miles on a highway outside San Diego? 2WD

    2) Where do you live in CA?

    3) What’s your budget? I got my 2020 2WD DC SX Pkg for $35,500. A 4WD version would have been $42,000+

I hunt and have often had a 4x4. I only got stuck once and it was in a Jeep Liberty 4x4 (company car). I’ve never had an issue with a 2WD truck here in South Texas so I couldn’t justify a $7,000 premium to get 4x4 even though I wanted 4x4.

What are you using the truck for? Is it just a daily driver...go to work, grocery store, mall, etc. If it's a daily driver that will never leave the pavement, I say 2wd is good enough. But if you're planning to go off road hunting, camping, snow etc then yes 4wd.

I live in So Cal, don't off road and have never needed 4WD. I put 245,000 miles on my '06 and never needed 4WD. Not even going over the grapevine in the ice and snow did I "need" it.

Resale is better, but does the money you get back at the end, cover the difference you paid up front?

The thing with 4WD, to me, is that if your truck stays on pavement and you live in So Cal, you won't need it.

That said .... If I had the extra money, I would have probably got a 4x4, then found some way to make use of it.

I had the same dilemma. I purchased a 4x2 SR5 May 19' and just this tuesday I traded that 4x2 and bought a 4x4 SR5. Like many here say "Its better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it". Just do your research and weigh out the needs. For me it was a want more than a need. I found the right deal and couldn't pass it up and plus it'll hold its value just because of 4wd.
