Pro owners actually running a rear sway bar? Anyone besides me?

I've researched this a ton and the general consensus online appears to be that adding the TRD rear sway bar to the Pro suspension defeats the purpose of what the suspension was designed to do. That said, the perceived benefits for those that are going to drive on road appear to outweigh the drawbacks to those that are going off road. I had some money sitting around from selling some aftermarket parts from my car so I figured I'd try it.

First off, I actually DO take my truck offroad... except my version of offroad is exclusively sand. I have 0 desire to go trail running or rock crawling in my Pro for a few reasons. One is that I live less than 6 miles from the beach in a very flat area where there are no trails close by. The other is that I just have no desire to pinstripe or damage my $60K+ rig. I'm not quite mall crawler status, but I like to keep my truck looking nice and don't want to dog it even though I know it could take it. That said, beach and sand dunes are fair game.

So, considering 99% of my driving will be on road with the other 1% on sand, I figured why not tighten up a little body roll and get the rear sway. I'm glad I did. Driving on regular roads--highways and streets--I really don't notice the difference at all. On ramps and off ramps are a totally different story though. The truck feels more planted and less "loose" going around a corner. Nothing like a sports car of course, but far better than stock. I haven't been on the sand with the sway bar on yet, but I can't imagine that with the type of driving I do on sand it'll be way worse. I also have the predator steps on my truck so it really isn't set up for maximum offroading anyway. So far I like the way the rear sway makes the truck feel. I also think it ties in the red accents of the Pro trim nicely as well.

I know it is consider blasphemous by some to run this on the Pro suspension, but is anyone else doing it?

I am not running it on a TRD pro but I am running it on the limited with the TRD off-road suspension and it does make a difference especially driving on the roads

I did for about 6 months and took it off because it killed the smooth ride.

Had one on my SR5. Considered taking it off before trading it in. Don’t regret leaving it on. The ride in the pro is so much better than the old one.

The sway bar is a must now that I have tried it. Handles like a sedan on curves.

I had it installed last week. I noticed the difference immediately. I don't off-road, and my commute is about 45 minutes on a daily basis with some windy roads. The Toyota guy said his customers swear by them and my wife actually enjoys riding in the truck now.

I mostly will use my truck on road and at the beach as well. I upgraded both front and rear sway bars and the truck drives much better. It just doesn’t have the body roll that it used to. I liked them so much I ordered a stiffer rear sway for my wife’s Outback.

When I drove my new Pro home, I entered an on ramp for the first time. My spouse was quietly saying...which got louder..."Not a Miata, not a Miata...!" Yes, I have several Miata's and RX7's that are extremely planted. This truck was not and I drive the curves hard, trying to find an apex in everything I drive to get through as fast and efficiently as possible. The truck plowed and leaned hard. Not good when driving fast and in a turn. (That said, they are NOT autocross competitors, but its a truck!)

That said, the very first modification was the anti-sway bar. It made a world of difference. Yesterday, I pulled into a Harbor Freight...fast. I did not want to hold up traffic in back of me and did not want to get rear ended. That turn came up fast. A guy coming out of the drive stared with mouth open at this large truck making that turn fast and maybe scarily who the handling was true. On ramps, off ramps, not a problem!

I also have to agree with the OP! I don't intend to take this truck offroading. Too big! I have a Jeep if I want to go on trails and rock or trail climbing! Again, not really a vehicle for that, nor do I want to destroy my paint by taking in to tight places. The entry price of ownership is just too high!

If you were towing a travel trailer, or something heavy I could see it's purpose. But for most it's just Eye Candy because it's RED and it says TRD on it. These trucks actually ride much better without it, on and off road.

After driving on it for almost a week, I'm going have to say we agree to disagree. It's definitely changed the rear end while cornering and using the massive ramos in the DFW metroplex. The fact that it's TRD red IS bonus. If it were just eye candy though, I would have swapped out the front as well.

I just bought a new Pro and coming from a Tacoma I noticed the body roll immediately. I figured I would just get used to it, but the rear sway bar might be a good option for me as well. Im not a big off roader and if I’m gonna be honest I probably fit more in the category of mall crawler. However I do pull a boat and it probably would benefit me to tighten up the rear end some.

An anti-sway bar is used to reduce sway. Its basic physics. Don't know why they don't come from the factory. Many trucks do have them. They are not only used for towing, etc.
On my Jeep, I unlock the front sway bar when doing serious off roading. Something the Tundra generally doesn't see due to its size. The rear sway does't get unlocked. Driving with the front anti-sway unlocked is a hairy experience. They are used to reduce sway. Plain and simple.
The best analysis is for the poster who objects to do a comparison test. That's it. If ego doesn't get in the way, it will be an enlightening experience.

I added the rear sway bar just because it made a nice improvement to the overall handling of the truck which I enjoy more than the soft ride without it. I don't do any off roading so no worries there either.

I had a TRD sway bar but did not like the ride. Switched to a Hellwig (adjustable for lift) and LOVED IT! I also found I had some noise back there and I had that noise with the TRD but did not take it off road because it was on my truck for a short time.

Come to find out I have Icon RXT leaf springs and they rubbed the sway bar and I was not able to correct it. Now I have it up for sale

I installed the TRD a few weeks ago. For empty loads or mall crawling it made a HUGE difference.

So I find this to be an interesting option... I fall in exactly the same boat. I won't be doing any serious off-roading in my Truck but sand/beaches and trails are the type of terrain I'll use it on besides primary on-road use around town. I just got a Pro last week and do notice some way on highway ramps or turns at a higher speed.

Why would the sway bar impact the soft/smooth ride in the TRD Pro? And if so how... does the rider get stiffer or harsh?

I’ve added one to mine. It was a nice upgrade considering the weight and height I’ve added. It’s much more planted now.

This thread is making me want to go out and try a rear sway bar. I really don't need to spend any more money on this truck right now.

It impacts the ride because you're connecting the rear end to the frame thru a torsion bar. Anything one tire hits gets transferred over to the other side thru the torsion bar, making the small bumps and potholes your Pro used to glide over, more jarring.

Yes. The ride becomes more harsh. I ran with the RSB on my Pro for about 6 months. The difference in the corners was night and day, and at first I didn't think it killed the smooth ride. One day I was bored so I took one of the bolts out where the end link connects to the bar (essentially disabling it) and went for a cruise. The bar was removed after that.

    You gotta make a choice.

Buy a used one. If you don't like it, take it off and sell it. They're popular here and you'd probably recoup all of your moneny.

I am a driver of vehicles, so I don't enjoy a disconnected floating ride. I won't own a vehicle that doesn't come with, or one that I can't add a rear anti-roll bar to. As for the addition of a rear bar making the ride harsher, that's not been my experience over the last 40+ years of adding rear bars to vehicles. Ride harshness has almost everything to do with the tires you are rolling on, not whether you have a rear bar or not.

I’d definitely try it out. I figured for <$250 for the TRD sway bar I’d give it a shot. Definitely worth it IMO
