2006 Tundra vibration during deceleration

I can not hear or fell anything during acceleration, but as soon as I decelerate I get a vibration that gets worse the slower I go. At almost a stop, it chatters a little that I feel in my feet on the floor board. I replaced the center support bearing that was bad, but no change. I checked all brakes. The problem is there even if I put it in neutral, 3rd or second. I put my window down and cant hear anything but with all windows up, it seems loud almost like having nobby tires on a 4X 4. Any suggestions where I go from hear. It does seam like it is getting worse and don't want my wife stuck somewhere.

And after all of my hunting I replaced the front brakes because I started getting a wee bit of a rotational noise. New pads and rotors and the vibration was gone...

 

I appreciate the input. My front pads have a lot of life left and the rotors are smooth. I thought about changing them. The back brakes are 75% worn but it feels like it is in the front.

Does it get worse when your braking or stay the same?

 

It stays the same. It will still do it if I don't brake and just put the lever in 2nd to slow down. I tried just emergency brake and still the same. You can really feel it about 10 mph and under when stopping.

I even checked to see if maybe I lost a bolt holding the caliper on and it would swing against the rotor during deceleration, but all is in place and tight.

Driveshaft out of phase?

 

this could very well be the case if the carrier bearing was replaced and not marked

 

It all started with no work done on the truck. I will double check the phase of the driveshaft. After the bearing was replaced, no difference.

 

Do you carry a lot of heavy loads? The constant change in drive shaft angle could have worn out a u joint. Had the exact same issue with a 1989 4Runner. I fixed it and replaced the leaf springs and never had a vibration again.

 

I have in the past. I tow a horse trailer a few times a year. It started when we were on our way home from visiting family in the mountains. An hour drive to get out of the hills. An hour on the freeway we heard echo from the walls but did not think it was our truck. Sounded like the howl of 4x4 tires. Now it's worse.

 

Check the u joints for play. Mine only did it when I was going down a hill and I was lightly pressing the gas, new u joints fixed it up

 

What speed was that at? Mine has the same issue but it's at 55+. I've been suspecting u joints as well...

 

Mine does it at any speed. You can feel it and hear it more at low speed. The worst is about 5 mph down to a stop. I checked the u joints.All good. I replaced the carrier bearing, center u joint (because I was there), back brakes. jacked up each wheel and spun them (no sound of dragging or grinding). Called a local shop and they said to leave it with them for a couple of days so they can troubleshoot it. I elected not to because they agent straight to "most likely need a new tranny and differential".

 

I had a similar situation after a long drive down a very steep, winding highway. About an hour down 10%+ grades and I was on the brakes hard a lot. Turned out it was the rotors warped from the heavy use. It did the exact thing you are describing, worse on deceleration and on the fwy. I lucked out, the next day it was gone. I have brand new rotors, have you checked yours for run-out?

 

It was probably 50+, definitely only felt it on the freeway.

 

Just an update. Still have not found the problem, but my carrier baring is bad again. Did not even have 20 miles on it. I bought it a o'reilly auto parts. I just picked up another one from the dealer for 6 times as much but they asked me for my VIN number. The part looks different. The tabs are not centered like the one I took off or the one from the auto parts store. I will find out tomorrow if it works.

 

Shame you missed the thread about the Spicer cross reference for the carrier bearing. The two points were, anything other than stock fails, quick and miserably. Second, you can order the Spicer part number for around $60 and its the factory carrier bearing. Even has Toyota stamped on it. Visual inspection of U-joints is only moderately helpful. I would check them all while you have the drive shaft out for carrier bearing replacement. Unbolt and check inside the U joint caps. The needles will disintegrate if the get run without grease and rust even for short periods of time. Be sure that the drive shaft is lined up exactly like it left the factory when reassembling.
