What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I'm not sure if they're different than Costco US batteries. Should be the same I'd think.

Also, shit hell. I got one test start and then she won't start. On the charger it goes I guess.

Son of a bitch. Swapped the old battery back in so i can at least get the truck out of the garage. Now it won't start. All I get is clicking...

Dss tuning. Got it on Amazon for $170. Curved 39” with Cree LED lights which I read is same LED manufacturer as the expensive light bars. Obviously won’t be same power but I’m not spending $1k on a light bar lol.

 

That's what I think. It'd not starting the truck anymore now either though.

With the old battery and the new one, I get the interior lights on and the dash lights up. When I turn the key, all I get are clicks.

My only ideas are the connector is pooched somehow or I have a fuse blown somewhere though I'm not sure where. I suppose somehow I fried the starter?? That seems unlikely though. I'm going to put the new battery back in, then try to jump start with the car.

Yup doesn't look great. If that nut will loosen up clean up those connections too.

 

That's the best baking soda and water will do. It'll have to wait until I replace the whole works. Next spring, finances allowing I'm planning to dump a few grand into this truck to overhaul it. One of the things to do is replace any and all corroded connectors and cables.

So the truck is running now. I put the new battery back in and The Woman came into the garage to see what I was swearing about. I went to show her how all I was getting were clicks and this time I got vroom. I have no idea. She says she's my good luck charm. For lack of a better explanation, I'm going with that.

Spent the weekend in the mountains. Went through some really cool stuff and got to actually test out my 4wd. Compared to before the conversion, it's insane where I can go now!

 

Yup, it definitely does. I need to figure out how to do it though. The one that's on there now is crimped on, so I'll have to work out how to take it off. I don't have enough excess cable to cut the old one off and install a new one unless there's a way to splice more cable in.

It's actually the La Plata mountains in Colorado. It's definitely one of my favorite places to disappear to.

 

You're going to wait until spring to fix that? I wouldn't go anywhere remote. You might get stranded.

 

The nut and the smaller connectors on top will be done in spring. I'm going to figure out the main battery terminal connector ASAP.

It shouldn’t be crimped. The positive terminal should be bolted on to the crimped end. Toyota sells the new terminal for cheap.

 

Looking at it again, it appears you're right. I'll swing into Toyota tomorrow and snag a new one.

 

Yeah boyz. Long day under the hood. Got her torn down, while cleaning up all the parts along the way, and started some put back. Cam Seals and Crank Seals are in place along with the Water Pump.

Should be a good start to the day tomorrow as it seems all the proper parts are with me and nothing was busted in shake down. Glad I bought a Pulley Removal Tool along with the Cam Holding/Crank Pulley Holder. Valuable to have!

Momba took care of business on the Crank Bolts and Cam Bolts easily.


Most of my time was spent cleaning everything so when its time for put back no time is wasted. Key is bagging all your bolts/nuts per part an labeling so you know where everything goes back. The amount of bolts and parts could be overwhelming if you aren’t meticulous.


Looks like my Oil Pump Seal is the Genesis of the weep showing at the oil pan. I snugged those bolts a hair on the oil pump cover (5 bolts in total) and ran a bead of FIPG 103 over the top mating surface. If she wants to bubble up hopefully the sealer will push the weep down toward the sides of the engine. Hoping that just the bolts snugging does the trick. Sure beats pulling the engine for a 50 cent O-Ring.

Made the cushions/mattress for my bed bench seat unit. The bed is super cozy and the shell is starting to actually feel like a camper in there.

I don't know how to sew and I don't have a wife, so I came up with a solution that will still let the mattress breathe to prevent mold.

First step was to cut the 3" mattress down to length/width as my camper bed is ever so slightly smaller than a twin.


The one I chose features a 2" regular foam base with 1" of some kind of gel foam on top. An electric bread carving knife made super clean cuts that might've even impressed @Professional Hand Model.

I cut a 2.5" frame out of 1/8" plywood to staple the fabric to. While ideally removable cushion covers could have simply be sewn to fit the foam, this project was dragging out and I needed the bed done.


Spray adhesive helps hold the plywood to the foam. I cut that frame freehand, by the way!


Next, I wrapped the cover around the mattress to meet the frame. I love the modern grey color with white stitching to reference my white interior.


Uniform folds on the corners (I'm sure I could have cut it square, but I didn't want waste $40 of fabric if I botched).


Lastly, I put another sheet of lighter, basic fabric over the bottom for a finished look. No pic available.

I am a huge fan of how these cushions turned out. Just need to add Velcro because they will definitely not stay put while offroading.

 

And I’m not sad about that!

I worn out by the point of getting to the cams. The replacement of them is easy. I punched a small hole and made it bigger. Used some 90° needle nose jabbed in the hole as leverage with the cover lip and pried them. On the crank seal, I punched down in at 45° with a sharp knife at the lip and pry/popped that thing off.

Pretty stoked on the challenge so far. Interesting note: the pass side cam seal port had some clogs in the little weep holes compared to the drivers side. Looked like little bits of excess sealer squeezings. I used my Krentist Tool and removed.

my research has shown that because of the tight center block, they are actually well-behaved and quiet like and all-terrain on the highway when they're aired up. Time will tell. They're heavy suckers at about 64lbs a tire

 

Wow! My Michelins are 53lbs each. I believe the stock tires P-Rated are around 45lbs each for comparison.

 

Mine are 78 lbs without the wheels

 

long time, no see.
Yesterday, I put some leaf spring clamps/straps on the Tundra to mitigate axle-wrap.
The short test-drive I took feels like it's all gone. No packing the driveshaft with grease. No thunk when accelerating from a stop.
I'll know better when I next take the Tundra to work.
