Has anyone out there modified their SDHQ sliders? My wife has a hard time getting in and out of the truck with the sliders since they have the gaps between the bars. She wants me to install my previous steps back on instead. I really like the sliders over the factory chrome bars I had before. I'm wondering if I can get someone to weld some flat plates on the top to make some level places to step on while getting in and out and keep them otherwise they may be coming off the truck. Has anyone else done that? If so, any pictures? I can always get them re-powdercoated after. Thanks.

If you have them on for looks and not actual protection for off roading, there are many side steps that LOOK like sliders and have the function of steps. I got the tygers......

I want to do the same, and extend them to protect the bedside in front of the tire. But can spend a little more $ and have a custom set built to my liking.

@Outbound is a welder, and won't bullshit you on how easy/difficult it would be. I think the SDHQ sliders are made out of more than just plain old steel, so idk if there would be any special skills required. Thus tagging the pro. :p

Should be pretty easy to weld on some steps.
    1. Grind off the finish.
    2. Weld on whatever metal you like for a step.
    3. Paint or re-powder coat.

I dont think he's trying to toss $1400 sliders. Just have someone weld on some plate steel with dimple dies.

Yeah, they don't get a ton of use, but better to be safe than sorry. If I do end up removing them I'll be getting some black steps instead of putting the chrome ones back on.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm going to my brother in laws tomorrow for dinner and he's a hell of a welder, so I was going to see if he'd be willing to come up with something.

Be careful with that grip tape man. I know it's called "grip" tape, but it only improves grip. I've witnessed a terrible accident where someone slipped on grip taped sliders and ended up sanding the side of their shin down to almost the bone. Their day ended with a trip to the ER.

It's not as cool looking, but if you have issues, throw some hydroturf on them.

Piece of cake to weld something to the top. Gonna take longer to remove 'em than to weld the plates on.

@Pinay had something similar done to her pelfrey (?) sliders. someone came to her house and welded plates over it while sliders were still on truck. painted over and it looked factory.

Seeing how I never got the last bolt installed on the drivers side between the frame and the tank they should come off pretty quick.

I want sliders, but I'm unwilling to deal with that bolt. 46 gallon tank problems.

Weld on? I have no idea what it's like to drop that tank but dropping the 38, when empty, is pretty easy. Lots of the directions for installing slider suggest loosening to get the required room?

I doubt the SDHQ steps are made out of some super extra special secret steel. Should be a really easy job to weld a couple of plates in place.

If you want this, it's apprentice level work.

If you want this, there's more fabrication involved. That said, it's still relatively simple to cut plate to fit into the gaps of your existing slider.

Any competent welding shop should be able to have you squared away in an afternoon.

Just checked and it is 4130 Chromoly Tubing. I'm not sure if that is going to behave any differently than any other steel. I've not touched a welder since the ag/mech shop in high school. :notsure:

I'm not really familiar with Chromoly myself. I'm thinking TIG would be the best way to weld it, but I'd have to look up what filler rod to use.

    Not many yet, mostly stock.
    Dimple die pattern is cool.
How good are you a fab work.? I believe you can use 16 gauge cold roll sheet steel over them. Tig will weld over it.
    Wish ya luck.
