Paint steering wheel trim panels on 14-15 tundra

this is my first DIY so here we go. If you want to paint or wrap, this is how you remove the trim panels on a 14-15 steering wheel. You'll need a T30 torx, pry tool and Philips screw driver.
First step is to disconnect the negative battery terminal (10 MM socket)
On bothe sides of the steering wheel there are 2 small access panels that need to be removed to get to the T30 torx.
Using a pry tool, pry off those two panels. You'll see a single T30 on each side.
Remove these, they hold the airbag in.
Pull straight out on the airbag and set it on top of the steering wheel.




just reverse the steps to put it back together.

the long panel above the glove box is clipped in as is the one to the left of the steering wheel. The ones on the left and right of the nav are a bit more challenging. radio has to be removed and most of the dash to remove the surround around the nav, they are screwed in from the back. took me about an hour to pull most of the dash apart. I used dupli color bed armor spray. I like it because it's textured and I know it will last forever. I put 4 light coats on.

 

thanks, I had a lot of trial and error when I was modding my 06 Tacoma x-runner.

 

didn't see any reason to pull it apart, I just removed it and taped it off.

Jeremy do you know how to remove and replace the actual steering wheel. I am wanting to replace my stock leather wrapped wheel with one that includes wood grain grips. The place I am looking to purchase from uses genuine OEM Toyota wheel and adds the woodgrain or carbon fiber grips to it and you install yourself and send them back your old wheel in exchange. You use your existing airbag and electrical wheel controls and just swap out the actual steering wheel. They indicate its easy to do yourself and say it can be done in about 30 mins. Problem is I can't find anything to show me how to replace the wheel 2014+ Tundra's. Closest thing I have found is your thread so thought you might know since the instructions you provided would at least be the first few steps in actually removing the steering wheel itself. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

 

Sorry, I didn't really pay much attention to removing the whole wheel. You might try a dealership, ask if they will print you out a schematic for removing the wheel.

Follow this staring at post #18. You can rent a steering wheel puller to make it easier. Make sure you dont thread the two holes on the side of the center nut too deep or it will crack the clock spring. (Ask me how i know). I replaced mine with a tacoma one.

 

Thanks for the info on this mod - I followed it to the letter and easily pull off the panels on my steering wheel for painting. Simple process!

Nice work on the trim pant, I'm in the process of "de-chroming" my interior as well. I am really interested in how you removed the steering wheel emblem on the airbag. Do you have pics of how you did it or any tips?

But seriously, awesome job. I will be doing this here real soon and this helps a lot. I am just trying to figure out what color I want the light gray and chrome trim to be.

I think I want to match the other dark gray trim as close as I can. I already have cans of Duplicolor in Toyota MGM for the hood bulge and surround. I am thinking that with a matte clear might be good. But I also have black trim paint...

Edit: Also, is there a secret to how you did the volume button? Does it come off with the whole steering wheel trim?

I wouldn't do textured like that. Use SEM trim paint 39143. Check out @2020Platinum and how he did his. He also has videos on the removal process.

I used 2020s video for removing it a few weeks ago, but I already got a small chip in my Plastidip.

I'll probably do paint next time. At least I'm comfortable taking it apart now.
