Gas tank roll-over valve stuck causes hard fuelling - anyone else?

Yes, I was just quoted $2300 for tank install and shipping to Denver, minus tax. It comes with all the necessary brackets and hardware.

 

Who does the install in the Denver area? That would be a nice upgrade for sure.

 

Maxair Colorado is 1 of 2 installers. I haven’t heard back from the other 4x4 shop in Northglenn, I emailed.

 

the filler neck is not the problem. the issue is the vent valve inside the tank.

 

I'm installing a 38 gallon tank in mine. Would you recommend disabling the vent before installing the tank so it can't happen?

 

well, I guess I didn’t knock on wood hard enough. It happened again. Can’t put gas in without trickling it in. FML.

it happened right after an off-road trip when the truck was shaking like hell going through some crazy washboards. I had just filled it up.

I plan to check the carbon filter too as gas may have gone into there. I’ve heard overfilling can cause that, and have the same outcome. Although I didn’t overfill, the shaking and driving at offroad angles right after a fill up could have caused gas to go up the wrong pipe so-to-speak.

Just like newguy above, me with a 38 gallon tank on my 2019 Tundra, a week of muzzle loader elk hunting in CO with my uncle, driving on washboard roads, up, through, and over rocky mild 4-wheel forest service roads with a few steep ups and downs, parking at slight slants, then 5 miles of the worst washboard roads I have ever been on, and now, can’t put gas in the tank.

In to my dealership with my trusted service advisor (he’s been around awhile and has only seen this once...on a Highlander) Wed morning, back to me the next day, yesterday (Thur) with brand new 38 gallon tank because the roll-over valve had got stuck in my 13 month old Tundra. Thankful it is still under warranty, otherwise it would have been $1248.

 

I just discovered I have this problem! I was luckily able to get 25 gallons in the tank over the course of about 45 minutes holding the handle very lightly, trickling fuel in.

What dealership did you take it to? I ask because I'd like to go to someone that has seen this problem before and possibly get some help. Stevinson Toyota West laughed at me when I told them the problem over the phone this weekend.

 

I had this problem on a jeep cherokee and a wrangler, by far one of the most frustrating. has anyone reported this problem with the smaller tanks? asking for a friend

Update!

After a week of back & forth with the Service Manager, a borescope picture they claimed showed evidence of siphoning, I approved removing the tank for closer inspection with the caveat I may have to make a vandalism claim or pay out of pocket. I wasn't happy about that but I wanted to see more.

After removing the tank the Svc. Mgr. called me back and apologized, saying after closer inspection there is another flap or cover or something in the fuel filler tube that prevents any sort of hose from being inserted into the tank, thus preventing the ability to siphon fuel, so the roll over valve that was visibly bent and/damaged thus necessitating a full fuel tank replacement, would indeed be covered under Warranty.

I'll be interested to see if others encounter this issue, odd two trucks in Colorado had it happen.

 

not odd at all...major issue with these tanks. poor manufacturing to have a valve that fails so easily not be replaceable like it was on the first gen

 

I have a 2016 TRD Pro. I am from Kansas City, and just completed the Camino Del Diablo from Organ Pipe to Yuma. Encountered some washboard and rough terrain, but nothing serious. Same issue, in Yuma, unable to fuel taking 1 minute and 30 seconds per gallon at a trickle. I had to drive all the way back to Kansas City pumping that slow...... And we all know how much gas a 5.7 uses...... I am not sure if I should start at the canister/filter, or go straight to roll over valve...... NOT cool

 

It's the rollover valve...

 

I have a 2016, way out of warranty. Toyota replaced the whole gas tank with 0 out of pocket.

This issue sucks big balls.

I’m not sure what prompted them to fix it, but take it to the dealership and tell them you’re hearing many people are getting it fixed and covered by Toyota.

This is very true but there's a known problem with the roll over valve in the 38 gal tank.

 

I would like to know why this valve is failing and why it doesn't happen on the smaller tank? My time I spent as a dealer tech I never saw an issue with the rollover valve causing fuel filling issues.

 

It's happened to a bunch of people whom I know. I dropped my tank since the local dealer was worse than useless. I found the gate was stuck. Basically like a toilet flapper, it's just a spring loaded gate that closes and the edge of it gets stuck on the wall or edge of the orifice. I lightly touched it with a long, flat screwdriver and it sprung open.
So, the problem is the machining is off by several ten thousandths or the hinge has too much play. I haven't scientifically compiled data but my feeling is that it effects '16+ 38 gal tanks only and '16s seem to have the most trouble with the issue.

 

Did you take some pictures? I wouldn't mind seeing the valve. Anyway to modify or trim to make it work so it doesn't stick?

 

I do have pics somewhere, I'll see if I can find 'em. The valve is about 7" down inside the tank and I can't imagine any way to work on it. I permanently disabled mine. Even though my truck was still under warranty the local dealer denied my claim because of the mods I've done. Like my suspension caused the roll over valve to fail. They were happy to charge me $200 to stick a borescope down the fill tube and tell me they couldn't see anything though. I already knew what the problem was thanks to @TRON and @Vizsla. At that point there was NO way I was spending $1,200 to purchase a new tank. Hence the mod to my roll over valve.

 

Sorry for the poor quality but this is looking down into the tank. There's the anti siphon "bullseye" then the shiny part is the flapper. It doesn't appear closed in the photo but that's just the poor lighting.

 

I would try another dealer. You're right that if the modes have nothing to do with your roll over valve it should be covered. What did you do to the valve to get it to work?

 

It took surprisingly little force, a little push with the flat screwdriver and it popped open. But, that wasn't a permanent fix and I could easily envision it happening again.

 

So if you have the issue again keep a long flexible rod and push it open through the filler neck. Not ideal but cheap.

 

Extremely unlikely that you'd be able to make it past all the bends and get +/- 7" past the anti-siphon "bullseye" to tap the valve. I just bent mine so that it'll never shut again. I do not recommend anyone do this, it's just what I did.
BTW, I did try compressed air but couldn't get a tight enough seal. Not sure it'd work even with a tight seal, might cause more harm to the e-vap system

 

If the valve opened so easily you would think the weight of the fuel would be able to push it open.

What is actually holding the valve in the closed/open positions? I just thought the valve was open normally with gravity then if the truck ended upside down the valve would slide shut and seal.
