Happy Saturday everyone! So I bought my TRD pro almost three months ago to use as a family vehicle and so far I’m loving it and so is wife except for one minor yet very annoying quirk. Since our daughter is still an infant, my wife always sits in the rear middle seat next to the car seat.

On almost every trip no matter how short, she’d always randomly holler “I’m locked in!” and she’d have to un buckle, reset, then buckle back up.
Not only is this annoying but poses somewhat of a safety issue if she has to constantly unbuckle/buckle to keep from being locked down. Does this seem like a malfunction?

What’s even more odd is that on our most recent errand I had parked the truck, left everything running because they waited in the truck as I dropped something off and came back 2 mins later to her complaining that it locked again without the truck even moving!

She's not pulling it out all the way before buckling is she? Some seat belts have a sprag clutch type device in them that activate once you pull them all the way out and only allow the seat belt to retract and not extend. Kinda sounds like what's going on.

No, she never pulls the belt all the way out to buckle. Everything will be working normally with her being able to access the baby, then the next second she’ll be locked in randomly. This happens even on normal highway driving not off roading.

    Function before sparkle.
Happens to my wife too. If it happens to three wives is it a bug or a feature?

Haha let’s call it a bug, if it was a feature I’m afraid she’d make me sell it! ;)

It happens to me all the time in driver seat if I move my body too fast. I just have to move slower and more deliberate.

    Its super fucking annoying.
My Tacoma was even worse... but the Tundra does the same thing.
Rolling up to a stop sign... if I lean forward for a better left/right view... the fucking belt locks up and prevents me from moving. I HATE IT.

Not yet, I figured I’ll wait until I bring it in for the first service to have this checked out along with the signal recall.

I bought my first Tundra in Jan! 2021 TRD Limited Crewmax and I love it! My wife even said she likes it, too, which is kind of a big deal. BUT absolutely every trip, when she sits between our two daughters in the back with our two pointers on the floor, she remembers she HATES the middle rear seatbelt.

This is an important thread for any fathers considering a Tundra and for Toyota. Happy wife, happy life, right? Now, if your wife and life are all in a metal box right behind you while you’re strapped in...

Had my first service a couple months ago and brought up the issue. Ofcourse they weren’t able to replicate it but the SA said they did take note of my concern just to start a paper trail on the issue. I highly suspect they didn’t even bother taking it for a drive and just tested the belt in the shop.
Go figure, the ONE time I actually didn’t mind the techs taking my truck for a drive they didn’t.

My wife also complains about this constantly as she gets stuck back there with our daughter. It got so bad she made me switch places with her on the last trip and I couldn’t handle it. One the middle seatbelt seems smaller than the others, I’m a bigger guy and couldn’t get in it comfortably to begin with. The back seat belts all seem to lock more than the front ones.
We also noticed something similar in the back of my brothers Ram. They all seem to lock in the back way worse and more frequently than in the front seats.

If anyone ever finds a solution to this, please share and save all our marriages.

Oem tonneau, side steps, spray in liner. Trd skidplate.
Its a safety feature, toyota has had for years and years. Seatbelts have ALR and ELR restraint systems. Dont pull the belt fast.

Supposedly this is typical in all 3rd generation Tundra Crewmax. Dealer told me today it was a normal function on my 2021 Crewmax. As all have stated above, no one wants to sit in that seat and now that most of the grandkids are out of carseat size/age they refuse to ride with us if they have to sit in the middle. If they have to ride in the middle they will slide out of the shoulder harness if we are not paying close attention.
Seems that it is more of a hazard than a safety feature.
    Just saying.
FYI>>>>>>>>>>my 2017 Crewmax did not have this issue.
