Need your opinion on lift/bigger tires

Coil overs have arrived! Deaver Springs should be ready any day now as well. Change of plans yet again, going for min 3” lift & 33’s. Luckily Deaver says the springs might actually be 2” lift since they had 1.5” lift and I wanted medium duty. The world works in mysterious ways sometimes.

I was constantly questioning myself with doing just a 2” lift and 31’s. I feel much better knowing I’ll have 3” and 33’s on the trails.

A friend who’s a mechanists is helping make Aluminum armor. Feeling good right about now.

My only concern now is all the little things I’m overlooking since I really don’t know much about mechanics. I know I need to get longer brake lines... 3” lift and extended travel coil overs will push my lines to the limit I think?...

Any tips on what I might be overlooking would be greatly appreciated!

No you should be fine with stock lines. If you were going long travel or a 6" lift then you would need longer lines. That suspension you have won't push beyond the limit for stock lines.

I forget what all you had planned so feel free to ignore if this is a repeat At 3 inch lift, you'll want aftermarket upper control arms and restrap your cv boots. Also with the tire size be prepared for some cutting and pounding.

 

Thanks! Have Camburg UCAs waiting for install. I’ll be googling “restrap cv boots” shortly lol. I’m prepared for some cutting. My plan is to install everything myself and take my truck to a local shop that specializes in off-road rigs. Have them install tires, make any modifications needed and alignment. I sure would like 295/75R16’s. True 33’s. Would like 34’s even more but Ko2s don’t come in that size for 16” rims n I really like my rims.

Since these coil overs are adjustable, maybe I can get a larger lift than just 3”?. Want a level truck so not exactly sure what I would do about the leaf springs tho...

No, don't go that direction. 3" is the brink by this method, anything further and it will ride like hell (I know, I've done it). Plus with 4x4 your axles won't hang at that kind of angle.

If you install your suspension and you find your rear is slightly higher than the front, enough to bother you, Total Chaos makes a longer shackle that will lower the rear about 3/4 of an inch, and it's stronger than stock. Don't give in to the temptation to raise the front more because the rear is taller.

 

I’m worried the rear will be lower than the front but good notes on front. I still want a good ride as the places I want to go are hundreds of miles away. I was thinking of raising the front more just so I can fit larger tires. After months of thinking while waiting for parts to arrive, I’ve realized I want to have peace of mind on the trails but not to the point where I hate driving to get there... So 3” max and cut what needs to be cut is what I’m thinking with the advice I’m getting so far.

One question, I’m thinking I’ll wait To install the suspension till after I install the armor my friend is making. Then have the shop adjust the coil overs to 3” lift. Armor is aluminum but still kinda worried it’ll weigh down the truck if I put it on afterwards. If the armor does weigh down the truck, would a 3” lift from stock still give me a rough ride?... thinking I’m fine but appreciate the feedback I get here!

 

I see. Don't get hung up on 3", and don't get hung up on being absolutely level. When you get those leaf springs you'll find your truck will shift weight a lot more and the stance will change when ground isn't level.

My truck went up about an inch and a half in the rear and 2 inches in the front. Its slightly higher in the rear and fits 285/75/16 fine after a little bit of trimming.

 

To get 3” of luff from the kings your going to be maxing our preload. It will ride very stiff. 2.5” lift with heavier springs would ride better

 

I need to find someone to borrow 285s from.. if they fit I’ll buy em but I don’t like rub

 

I run about 2"s of lift on Toytec Boss coils, no trimming, pounding or pinching, 285/75/16 with zero rub.
-12et with 2.5 inch backspace. Goodyear Duratracs.

 

That’s reassuring. 285’s on a 2” lift sounds good. Wheelers said the coil overs come with a standard 2” lift out the box. We’ll see how everything works with the 2” at first.
I don’t mind the rear being higher. As long as it’s not lower.

Recently came across @Casper421 build page and planning on following some of the mods he made on his lift. Awesome looking truck Casper! I read through 10 pages but couldn't find how much of a lift it took to fit those tires and if cutting was needed.

I'm planning on the following based on Casper's build. Not sure if I absolutely need them but I rather be safe than sorry on a trail in the middle of nowhere;
- spindle gussets
- steering rack bushings(this one I haven't had a chance to research yet but guessing it's needed with a lift, I have a fairly new steering rack)
- Superbumps front & back
- High Angle CV boots - Wasn't really sure what restrap CV boots meant which Rock Climber suggested but came across high angle CV boots in Casper's page and there are some territorials on Youtube. Guessing this is the way to go...

Your thoughts and suggestions are super appreciated!

 

I never measured before the install but I’m only at around 2-2.25” of lift. Lots of cutting and bashing but still rub at full stuff. Rubbed the frame so I added spacers and had to cut even more.

 

If you had to do it over would you still go with 285/75 or go down to 285/70's? I really like the stance your truck has but I've not had to do any cutting or trimming.

 

if it makes you feel any better I'm running the Eibach Pro trucks with the same OME springs as you with 285/75/16 and they don't rub at all.

 

How much did you lift your truck? I think I’ll end up at same size tires for my truck.

I'm not exactly sure. somewhere between 2.5-3". I have a 2" block in the rear and it look pretty close to level. I can measure hub to fender if you'd like.

Couple of thoughts. The CV boot restrap is basically replacing the clamps on your current inner CV boots. When you lift, the angle changes enough that the old clamps start spitting grease. If your CV's are in good condition, I would personally do that instead, if you go with high angle boots you'll have to pull the cv axles and remove the gears to reboot. A lot of us have had 2-3 lifts with stock boots and no problems.

Since your steering rack is pretty new, I'd get under the truck and see if you have any play in the bushings. Just have somebody turn the wheel back and forth and you'll see if the rack moves. If not, I'd leave leave them until they need to be replaced.

My only caution with superbumps on the front is to make sure you can get the current bumpstops off without destroying things. If they are rusted or stuck you'll probably do more damage trying to get them off and then they are a royal pain to fix.

If you're daily driving the truck in addition to off-road, personal opinion, but check your sway bar bushings and sway bar end links. I can't drive on road without them, but some can just fine.

 

I'm parked at a bit of an angle right now, so that puts things a bit askew, but on average, I'm at 23 1/2" from center of hub to bottom of flare in the rear, and 23 5/8" from center of hub to flare in the front.

 

Thank you! Great info! Put new Hellwig sway bars front and back last year. Bushings were replaced at the time. I drive through windy mountain roads fairly often and the sway bars have completely changed the drive for the better.

I just measured and I'm 23" from center of rim to the fender flare currently. I have Bilsteins set on 1st notch which if I remember correctly is only about an .85" lift. I do have the TRD package which I believe is about 1" higher than non TRD. Has me thinking with the coilovers at 2" lift, I might only be getting another half inch lift than my current set up?... Maybe I can fit 295/75R16 with a 2.5" lift. I can't wait to get everything installed lol.

 

I think 285/75’s are perfect for these trucks. I knew going into it I’d have to cut and bash a lot to make them fit at full stuff, full lock. 35’s will require too much work to fit so I’ll stick with 285/75’s.
