I must have been on crack yesterday.

Thanks for correcting me on that. Cleaned thread and corrected my mistake.

    Yes.

Best thing to do is get an actual weight of the truck with a full tank of fuel. Let’s pretend your truck weighs 5500 lbs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 7200 lbs. you have 1700 lbs if payload capacity. Start subtracting weight that you add.

Oh man, I wish I had those numbers. My truck is 5900 pounds with a 7000 GVWR leaving 1100 pounds of payload :)

Can do towing capacity the same way by subtracting the truck weight from the GCWR.

@Tinnitus hope this helps with your question.

    Cpl, we're getting there.

If we go back to robatumd's OP and look at his numbers, what was his towing capacity after loading his truck, and was he over or under with his trailer?

We looked for a year before we found our Airstream. We decided 22ft was the max size and years later, don't regret it. Even 22ft is big for some sites and it gets stressful getting the trailer in with the truck.

It all depends on what kind of glamping you plan on with your Airstream. If you head out west, you'll have a completely different experience with a big trailer. Over 25ft and you'll miss out on some great camping and end up in more KOA style stuff.

At the weights you quoted, your WD hitch is under what it needs to be. You should be at LEAST at 800lbs, better yet 1000lbs if your estimates are correct.

I think the TRD Sport suspension works well for towing. I have a 2020DC TRD Sport and tow a 5500# trailer and my tongue weight is around 550# I only squat 1/2" in the rear. Sits pretty even.

I'm looking at the 2021 Crewmax TRD Sport 4X4 Tundra for towing a Bullet TT 258RK (5500# Dry Weight) and 650# hitch weight. I discovered that you loose about 300lbs of truck payload capacity when you opt for the 4x4 versus the 4X2 models (I think that addresses the authors earlier comment regarding the reduced payload value of 1200 lbs versus the 1500 lbs he thought he was getting). I think I will be pretty close to the trucks payload capacity with this setup and wandered if maybe the 4X2 would be a better choice for towing? ...but also wandered if Canadian winters and muddy campgrounds might should be a consideration with a 4X2 drive.

I'm also in Canada and would never buy a 2WD truck. You MIGHT get by with good snow tires if you never go off road but why risk it?

Your 6K Equalizer WD is not rated high enough for a trailer of that size. Your need to jump up to the 10K. I have the 6K equalizer for my hitch and I'm borderline towing around 5.5K and around 550lbs tongue weight. That will properly deal with the sage when its set up correctly.

Sorry, saw this has already been addressed.

Unfortunately no for the Equalizer. The 10K uses a larger hitch head than the 6K.

Oh that sucks. I guess there’s a line drawn in the sand on what someone can upgrade to. My E2 was upgradeable, but it wasn’t the lighter rated one either.

Yeah I looked into it because I'm borderline and thought I'll just buy the 10K rated bars.

I appreciate the information Dave. Been really impressed with how more people are taking tow safety and solutions seriously lately.

Tow safety and the solution required me to trade my tundra in for 3/4 ton unfortunately :(

Choose carefully. Some 3/4 ton trucks have lower payloads than 1/2 tons. Also check forums for reliability issues on the brand your interested in.

Went with a ford 6.2 gasser and payload of 3,300lbs so no worries.

I am considering doing the same thing currently. I pull a 30FT airstream and the tongue weight is 900 lbs from the factory (and i know its more). I al likely 100% over payload with my family and stuff in the bed.

What did you end up getting? I ma looking at the F-250. I really dont want to trade in the tundra but I dont know if I have any other options.

I went with a 2020 f250 with the 6.2 gasser. Really like the new 7.3 gasser, but refuse to get a first year engine vehicle. I really didn’t want to get rid of the tundra, but truck prices will only keep going up and the ford 6.2 is the most reliable heavy duty gas truck now since Chevy quit making the 6.0

Good thing you didn't choose the 7.3. It's having issues with ignition coil wires. Check engine light comes on with a cylinder misfire. Ford can't supply the part because there is a shortage. Owners have been waiting a month or more for the part. Many who have been able to secure the part buy more than one to keep in the truck to change it out when the misfire happens.

Exactly why I didn’t go with the 7.3. If it was in year 3 of production I would have, but the 6.2 is almost as old as the tundra 5.7 and are on par with the reliability I’d say.

I am looking at getting the 6.7 Diesel. How do you like the 250 so far? I know its never going to be as nice as the Tundra.

Can't remember specifics but I thought the 6.2s had some issues as well.

It's a Ford, more than just the engine is going to be an issue.

I like the seats and flat rear floorboard better. AC is ice cold and truck drives solid. I’ve driven fords before so it’s nothing new to me. As far as the diesel, the power is great, but I would buy one unless absolutely necessary. I would’ve kept my tundra forever, but the payload is an absolute joke. My wife’s Mazda CX-9 has the same payload as my tundra had
