Its time for a new deer rifle. A buddy of mine let me borrow his Remington 700 this past year and I really like that gun. What are some other recommendations on what I should be looking at fellas? Most I'll be shooting is 200 yards or so. Im tempted to bring the AR out with me once or twice but of course I dont want to hit something in a tough spot and just wound it.

if i was going to be buying a new rifle and it's going to be for deer only i'd probably either look into a tikka or sako 270.

Whoops, maybe I should have prefaced this thread with the fact I have a budget of $1000. Ideally that would include glass too.

Love my Tikka 30-06. Trigger is great and can go from antelope to elk. I would have put a different reticle in my glass though. I just have basic cross hairs that can limit beyond 200 yds.

2 things to consider; first is caliber, and all 3 previously mentioned would top my list. 270, 30-06, or 308 will serve well on anything anywhere in the country and you will be able to buy ammo at just about any hardware store from Oregon to Florida.

Second, is manufacturer; that is going to be dictated by your budget. Ruger and Remington top my list for guns in the range you are talking about. If you're able to go 2 to 3K weatherby and kimber make sweet rifles. Optics also can easily run to several thousand but you can get a fine Vortex for under 300$.

    Echoing @gosolo 's post.
I'd look at .308 or 30-06 just for ammo availability and cost. That's plenty of lead to dust a mule at 200 yards.

I love vortex optics. I'd look in the variable 3-9x range - especially in heavily wooded areas. 40mm will give you ample light when in dark woods without being too heavy.

I bought a Thompson Center Venture Prdator 24" barrel in .308 for last deer season. I really like it. Killed two deer with it. I have the same rifle in 22.250 for yotes.

I'd recommend a Remington 700 chambered in 270 Winchester. That round has killed more deer than nearly any other, ammo is cheap and easy to find, and every gunsmith knows how to work on a Remington 700 action.

Nothing wrong with howa but its not American made. I'm not going all hypocritical on you though, I've got German and Austrian pistols, and Italian shotguns.

Same but with hogue stock and chambered in 308. Haven't killed anything with it yet, but hopefully soon. I dont come from a hunting fam, so just getting into learning. Glass is from Burris.

The ruger 270 I use most of the time is about 30 years old with a 3x9 Leopoldo. Taken many deer and 3 elk.

I have an FN TSR XP .308. It's dead nuts accurate. You can find them used right at 1k. Nice OD green hogue stock too. I love it! It is a little heavy though.

I have a Remington 700 in .270. It shoots really well, never had a problem with it except I did have to send it in because apparently some of them are firing without pulling the trigger. I've never had that issue with mine, but others have. With that being said, there are several good rifles in that price range that you could get.

Mossberg makes a mall-tacticool looking bolt gun in .308. I bought one to take when the weather sucks and I don't care about getting it ruined.
    IMG_1810.jpg
I can shoot 100yd dimes every time with it. Great gun. Think I paid $300 with no glass. Can't remember the name or model of it though.

    Good suggestions so far.

When I did actually brave the cold weather/tents/hiking and the cost of hunting vs a butcher, I used a Rem model 700 7mm mag. Look at the trajectory and how flat that bullet stays. You hit your target with that round, it isn't getting up.

For Elk, I used a .300 win mag.

Then again, my Dad always used his trusty Springfield 30-06 and was very successful with that. One of the most versatile rifles out there, considering you can go from ~124gr to 220gr loads.

Bought one of those 7's in 1976 lots of fun to hit with but for me it was a miserable gun to shoot. Everything you said about it is true, flat shooting with plenty of energy. The kick was what I didn't like. Some people are better at that than others, but I started to develop a flinch.

I also have a rifle chambered in 7mm Rem mag, was the first rifle I ever went out and bought, and chose the big 7 for the exact reasons ColoradoTJ mentioned. Well, as Gosolo experienced, I soon developed a flinch when shooting it that took a few years to work through. A limbsaver recoil pad was part of that process. So on that note, I'd far sooner recommend a clambering of 7mm-08, 260Rem, .308win, 270win, 6.5x55, etc for an entry level deer rifle. Don't learn the hard way like I did, learn the easy way, and work up from there.

And before you get too excited about calling me a wussy pansy for those recommendations, I bought a rifle in .338WM last year, and the last two shots I took with it at the completion of load development and sighting in were touching at 200M. Too bad wild bison are harder to find than paper targets. :(

I forgot to mention something else. @joem1cha3l should be watching. Weight. That 7 got damn heavy after a day in the field and i was young and tougher then. The 270 I replaced it with is far easier to carry all day.

Pretty sure this isn't his first rifle, but I also agree with the statement about the 7mm if factory. Mine had a brake and a really nice buttpad. :D

My first rifle was a .243. Awesome weapon.

Funny, my first was a Remington 6mm, basically the same cartridge as the.243. Super high velocity bullets fragment touching a blade of grass.

Some modern mono-metal bullets like the Barnes TTSX or Hornady GMX change all that. No fragmentation with those.

Of course back when I still had the gun those bullets didn't exist. I do wish I still had the gun but I gave it to my daughter in law. I also parted with all the brass, reloading dies, and bullets. Noregerts?
