2006 DC XSP Build

Longtime lurker first time poster...

Figured after all the info I’ve borrowed from this site I would share my rig and my mods as they happen, and hopefully help others along as I have been.

This is the DC the day I brought her home...


Pretty much factory with the XSP package with 20” Enkei wheels, chrome nerf bars, and a “skid plate”, with an ARE cap/rack system.

flash forward to today


Set of vision 16x8 wheels, BFG KO2 tires, Softopper, Weathertec floor mats, Sony double din touch screen.

On order I have a set of N-fab flush mount nerf steps and then plan on coating badges and chrome to match the dark gray of the wheels.

Down the road I’m thinking of leveling it out with adjustable struts and an AAL because I really want a ultra light slide in camper in a year or two.

 

In the regular maintenance category I replaced my broken tailgate handle with a part off Amazon. Clean fit and took less than 10 mins, part seems sturdy at was around $25.

 

Took her out to cape lookout national seashore in NC this weekend for a little wheeling, fishing, and camping. Both my friends 2003 AC and my truck did great! Caught a few good fish too!

passed a brand new Silverado “Carhart Edition” stuck in a foot of water on the back roads and we were able to cruise right by them.

 

Great looking truck. I really like the color and the wheels.

thanks! Great looking regular cab you have there. Lived in SLO for a bit a few years back and always envied the quality of California kept vehicles...must be the weather!

265/75r16. A little frame rub in full lock in reverse but other than that they are working out great.

yea I’m not sure if it was a regional thing or not but it was just an exterior package with 18 or 20” wheels, chrome nerf bars, and “skid plate”. There’s also XSP stitched on the headrest. I’m sure the original owner paid a couple $k extra for what is essentially an SR5. I see them around NC every once in a while.

 

That's pretty cool but not sure if worth the extra $$$. I've never seen one around my area - Alberta, Canada; but have seen 1 of 2 2003 T3 Tundra's around!!!

 

My mind just stood attention when you mentioned Alberta... it's no wonder you don't see too many 2003 Tundras anymore, the salted roads up your way eat the frames for lunch!

 

yea it wasn’t a selling point for me buying it used, it just happened to be the first clean one that was relatively stock that I saw with less than 150k on it. Looked for a year for this truck...

That's awesome. My wife and I are going in a few weeks. Did you take the ferry out of Davis, NC? How was the wind out there? We're planning to camp for several nights and I was warned the wind can get really bad.

 

yea we took the ferry out of Davis NC. If you don’t already have them you’ll need reservations. The wind can be variable, there’s times I’ve been out there and it’s super windy and other times when there’s no wind (bug spray necessary in that case). Best bet is to check the weather and if it’s forecasting more than 20mph winds I’d stay home. Worst case if you get caught out there when it’s really windy you can hang out on the bay side where it’s typically less wind and then sleep in the truck if absolutely necessary.

Reservations for the ferry or something else?

 

Yes reservations for the ferry. It’s their busy season with fall fishermen coming over to the island.

 

Additional “maintenance” this week was changing out the ratty armrest cover with a real leather replacement from Richmond auto. Tight fit and seems to be great quality. A little nervy cutting the new leather to fit around the bolt tho!

 

Decided to get a rod and cooler rack...thought it would be an easy installation but after about 5 hours I finally got it on! Ended up cutting a hole in the skid for oil changes and doing some trimming on the sides.



Turns out that the Curt front hitch was bowed inward a little bit from shipping so it was a PITA to line the holes in the frame up ended up having to leverage it in place with a screwdriver. Had to drill 2 holes in the frame which went super slow, my bit was worthless. First fished bolt worked great but the second got stuck so I had to widen the hole and really finesse it the second time. All in all all bolts line up and are installed. Now just waiting for my custom rod rack. Time for a cold one

 

It finally came!!! Truck needs a bath but I’m pumped! Ready for the island this weekend.

 

I have an 2005 XSP. I have the 2WD version. Same exact color and a double cab. Photo is Katskin porn. I installed front and rear
bun warmers at the same time. I couldn’t be happier.
For those that catch small details, ONLY XSP versions have one piece front fender flares.
I have not seen XSP with the 2 piece flares. Perhaps someone here has that.

 

@Sbrow191 nice XSP - much better with the new wheels! One piece flares and Katzkin in my XSP as well
