Been lurking for the forums a bit but just joined up recently since I just picked this up! 2016 with 42k miles that came from the east coast, but is now in Colorado.

So there’s just a small bit of rust underneath but after scratching it a bit seems like all surface rust. Attached some pics below and would love some input! Either way gonna spray er down with some rustoleum. Thanks!

Me neither, friends at my local shop said it looked fine but I want to make sure. Got it on Carvana so have 7 days to return it.

I would use a good rust neutralizer before you paint them, you'll get a much better result. Good luck.

I see the same sort of stuff on the ‘17 I just bought. It’s odd. Some bolts heads and welds are rusting and others look brand new. I actually removed some of them in the engine compartment and wire brushed them and repainted them. Was going to pick up some flat black for the frame stuff.

why not Rustoleum? Isn’t it a rust neutralizer?

POR15 comes in a spray can. Expensive, but it's held up great. Rustoleum I have to do every year.

Luckily once I neutralize it then rustoleum paint it I shouldn’t have to do it again living in Colorado. We use mag chloride on our roads, still not super friendly on paint but nothing like what salt does to the whole car. Living in Utah last year I washed the frame on my old Tacoma weekly since they use salt.

I would just put some fluid film or wool wax and call it a day
