How good is Auto LSD on a slick boat ramp or partial slipping on packed snow/ice compared to a mechanical LSD or locking differential?

Is a locking differential better for those scenarios?
    Or is Auto LSD better?
Or is Auto LSD close enough that you won't be telling yourself that you should have gotten a locking differential?

I can tell you auto LSD didn’t do a dang thing for me on my 2008 2wd. I had to get fat guys to sit on my tailgate quite a few times to get up the ramp. Anything has to be better.

The next truck was/is 4wd and no issues. Except the note. Don’t like that a bit.

I like the traction control system that Toyota has built. I have a Tundra and a 4runner and in low traction scenario's all you need to do is press a button and push the gas pedal. The traction control system figures everything else out. Never left me wanting a "locker". There's a bunch of video's on youtube - here's on that shows the difference between the Tundra traction control vs. Chevy's locker

My dad used to pull his boat up the ramp with a RWD Mazda MPV with no locker of any kind, mechanical or electronic.

The auto lsd is amazing compared to an open diff. The problem is that it is garbage compared to a real posi.

I have a 4WD LSD vehicle. I do get stuck on packed snow occasionally. It always seems there's one tire that has traction, but no power. And the wheels are slipping, so not creating enough friction to engage the LSD.

If I recall correctly, you have to keep it between 1800 and 2200 rpm for the auto LSD to engage. There's a really good thread on it here somewhere.

Here's another scenario....what if you are trying to get up a slick hill of packed snow (almost ice)?

I'd rather have power going to ALL tires.
    I also don't like wheels switching power/traction.

The system control in the Tundra is electronic so it doesn't require "friction" to engage the LSD.

It senses wheel slip electronically and then applies the brakes to the wheel that spinning faster.

    So I'm confused.

Do you want traction for the boat ramp or snow now?

Snow - some good tires and weight in the bed should work well....it does for others.

Boat ramp - good tires, 4wd.

Neither scenario do I personally see an immediate need to open the diff.

As @Cpl_Punishment stated, the e-lsd has parameters that need to be met to work properly.

A true locker is a bad idea for cornering on ice/snow. Since the Toyota traction control works by applying brakes it doesn't, IMO, work anywhere near as well as a true locker when you really need traction.

Idiots like me with my 2wd need a locker for the boat ramp.

a 4wd has the front wheels dry, no locker needed

I have owned a true Detroit locker in a 78 Ford and it was not very fun to drive in the snow. Off road it was great.

4Lo - it turns all the nannies off, 4Hi still has a little computer control which can be minimized with the TC button. But remember you're speed limited with 4Lo, it's for last ditch situations not everyday driving.

When pulling the boat out, we usually start in 4Hi. Then if you get in trouble, you still have another option.

I see so many negative comments about Toyota’s ATRAC, but very few if any videos of situations of it failing out in the wild that weren’t due to user error.

Granted, I have a 4Runner, which has selectable ATRAC, but it has gotten me through some serious situations. Makes me wonder if it’s just harder to activate it on a Tundra.

I think its users being afraid. It makes some ugly noises, but it's a great feature once you realize how to work it.

There are definitely times the Trac Control should be turned off. I can think of two times it screwed me in the past year.
1: Deep powder sand. Tried crossing a small sandy “beach” to get to a lake in Utah. Engine cut power as soon as the wheels slipped and killed my momentum and brought me to a dead stop and got me stuck till I turned it off.

2: Mud. Was off-road in Mojave and went through a deep puddle. Same result as above.

Does shifting to 4Hi turn off traction control or is that only 4Lo? I can't remember off hand now.

I believe it reduces it, but it's definitely still there at some point. Also the AdvanceTrac to prevent sliding is definitely still 100% on by default in 4Hi so any sideways motion and brakes get applied. This kicks in just as much in snow and mud and causes just as many problems. So when it's a case of needing no nannies to keep from getting stuck it's either hold down the TC button or go into 4Lo.

4 high does nothing for turning off the nannies. Only 4 low or holding down the button (once keeps power from cutting out, second time keeps the truck from applying the brake to the spinning wheel)

Example: this morning we were leaving our favorite dispersed campsite at Land Between The Lakes, and we got hung up off-roading in 4Lo with the front passenger and rear driver wheels spinning freely.

I hit the A-TRAC button, and we crawled right out.

It also takes me right through muddy ruts with hub-deep water.

Regarding some earlier comments, the auto lsd does not operate in 4wd, but some sort of ATRAC does.
