I only check in here occasionally and this thread moves way too fast for me to stay up to speed. ;)
I may need to dedicate a day or two to binge-read it in it's entirety.

Don't even waste your time. It' several pages of junk.

**** It looks like these new ECU Calibrations are for trucks needing their fuel pumps replaced.

There are even new ECU versions for older ECUs, which may make any previous patch work on those ECUs ...no longer effective.

We will provide more information as soon as we can.

If you have a Flex Fuel version truck and are affected by the fuel pump recall your ECU version is subject to change.
currently we do not have support for any of these new ECUs, and will have support ready as soon as we can.

Please don't blame me. Blame toyota.

I have not been effected by the fuel pump so I assume I do not need the new programming from Toyota

Just a thought, but FWIW, I don't think that an ECU ID is necessarily going to line up with a model year. Any model year could hypothetically have any number of IDs. There may be several for one model year and one for several model years being further complicated with different IDs for FFVs/5.7L/4.6L/4/0L in any given model year. Mat naturally would be more familiar with this... and subject to more headaches as a result...:annoyed:

I find it incredibly frustrating that vehicle mfgs continue to make it more and more difficult for consumers to modify a vehicle that they PAID FOR.

Cant wrap my head around this.

I get the whole "warranty" and "emissions" thing... but for gods sake ITS MINE once it's purchased.
The mfg shouldnt be legally able to restrict access to something you bought and paid for.

It can probably be summed up in just a few words: Liability. Lawyers. Patents. Proprietary. I guess I could probably go on, but why...

So far it only seems related to flex fuel trucks, 2016+.

Toyota, like any manufacture, goes to different lengths to protect their firmware not from the consumer, but from other automotive manufacturers. Toyota, Ford, Chevy, etc doesn't want their patented tech to be copied. And it's likely they have to protect it so that it cannot be easily tampered with to defeat emissions.

Toyota actually goes to greater lengths to keep you out than almost anyone.

    Disabling reading
    Disabling board reading
    Disabling NBD
    Disabling diagnostics
    Disabling access to the bootloader
Using a special encryption when flashing over can that only the bootloader can decode
    Disabling read over can
Disabling read by section over can
And using unique password protection per individual ID.

It's absolutely nuts. I dare say Toyota is #1 at keeping people out of their ECUs.
They just had one fatal flaw on older cars that made it stupid easy when it was finally figured out.

It's not really any different than me, or any other tuning company locking their tunes.
    1. You don't want unlicensed redistribution
    2. You don't want to have your work copied

Bosch / tricore also go to crazy lengths, including unique keys, "tuner protection patches" master / slave keying. Etc.
But there always seems to be a backdoor into them

In the end it's always liability + protecting expensive work.

Weird, because we just got 0CN62 file yesterday, brand new 2018 ECU

it may be only for folks who are on the recall list.

Matt, for my 2019 FF, I still do not have an available ECU update. Will I be able to tune my truck as of right now? You previously said there was an update for my truck and I'm not finding it nor Toyota list it.

The only way then would be to send your ECU to us so we can unlock it, since I do not yet have 0CN60

Is there an easy way to extract or find the ECU ID number ? or is that part of the OV Tune process ?
(I do have an older ebay pirated copy of Techstream if that will work)

Yes, I do believe that you can use Techstream. I'll need some time to try it with my copy before I can be sure and let you know how I manage it, unless there's someone else that knows off the top of their head. I'll do it this evening but wanna finish this movie. :)

Ya, I don't think that you have to go very deep to find it, it's on one of the main screens isn't it?

Do a health check and the ECU calibration ID will be on the very right in the results.

I have not seen an update available. Another forum member tried to help me since they worked at Toyota. Ran my VIN and verified the only thing that shows up is the blinker recall. I was just putting out my particular id since he said they didn't have 0CN60.

I have no idea how Mat get his info on when an ECU has an update from Toyota. But I think that when an ECU has an update, that somehow creates an access for him to be able to get the factory "tune". Without that he would need to have the ECU in hand to gather that information.

As buggered up as the postal system is at present and as seemingly overwhelmed as the other major shippers seem to be, you may want to back burner shipping your ECU as I would be suspicious of them (the shippers) being able to adhere to a reliable timeline.

It would be cheaper for me to update it myself using a paid subscription of TIS. But I don't want to waste that money if I buy it and don't see an available update.

When there’s an update, there’s also usually an update file (cuw). Sometimes these are part of a TSB, other times toyota just randomly updated the ecu and there’s no file for it.

On some ecus, you can just do a read and get the tune from it.

some of the newer ecus are read locked, so you can’t just download the tune off them. Getting the code off them requires physically having the ecu to get the data off it (requires special tools, so it’s not something simple for an end user to do)

basically there’s 3 ways to get a factory calibration which Ovtune can then start to modify
    1) read ecu and download data
    2) get data from ecu update
    3) physical access to ecu to retrieve data
