2021 Really the last year of the V8 for the Tundra?

With the price of fuel and the popularity of V8's among many competitors do you think Toyota will retire the V8?

I kind of doubt it and think the 5.7 will continue as a base trim engine and then an optional twin turbo V6 for upper trim levels.

I've seen rumors the Tacoma V6 would be the base powertrain but find that hard to believe the Tundra could meet the performance and towing benchmarks with such an underpowered platform.

I haven't seen any reliable information from any sources wither way.

Just rumors right now. No one knows except Toyota.

I had a 2012 F150 prior to my 2019 Tundra. I really had no issues with that 3.5 V6 ecoboost other than I did not like the turbo lag. My problem was the rest of the truck kept breaking! I’m not scared of a turbo 6 if the Tundra goes that route, mine never left me stranded. I also think Toyota should keep that 5.7 as an option because it is proven, reliable, and a beast of a motor! I do love this 5.7.

V8 is a dinosaur. As far as reliability, it can't be any worse than a ecoboost..

When I heard they were about to drop the V8 I thought it was a joke at first. At least keep the option! Also...what happened to the tundra getting a diesel engine? They have them in the Hilux..would be interesting to see how well it would go over in the states!

If this were true, which it isn't, the only way this wouldn't be a giant failure would be an electric/hybrid drivetrain to compete with the Cybertruck.:monocle: :spending:

The manager at my dealership thinks Toyota will keep the v8 as an option. Makes sense to me, but I guess we’ll all have to wait and see...

Why stop at 6? Lets go inline-5 and a giant turbo. Its just as good right?

If only we could get the 4.5 turbo diesel they put in the 200 series around the world. 200kw 600nm (230hp 440ftlbs) would be amazing in the tundra. Especially with a conservative tune pushing 300hp and 550ftlbs

There is NO replacement for displacement, this saying exists for a reason. There is just NO way you can get the same reliability out of smaller forced induction engines that have to work far harder and have far more moving parts and potential areas for failure!

I do love the advantages of turbos, but I’m rather tired of their issues. One more thing to break is one more problem to deal with down the road and it’s an expensive problem to boot when they go bad.

How many 5.7’s have hit a million miles now? And you think Japanese efficiency minded engineers are going to redo something that isn’t broken? Thats like them changing the Hilux engine also just because it’s a new decade.

There will be a V8 option, the only question is what size it will come in. The Big 3 still offer one so Toyota will to. If they still offer the 5.7, I won't complain at all. I would love to see the 5.0 in the Tundra making the same numbers as the 5.7 but who knows... Only time will tell.

And ...please do not put start stop tech on the next gen.

This was my main driver for jumping on a 2020. Seems like most manufacturers are going this route.

My plan at the moment is to drive the 2020 for a very long time unless they surprise me and leave the start stop behind.

Agree I HATE the stop/start. That’s another reason I went with Tundra over another F150.

That brings back memories because I used to say that when I bombed around in a cherry 78 Lincoln Mk V with a monstor 460 ci. I couldn t find anything that could out accelerate me going up hill. Of course I never tried it against another Mk V:D

Toyota should play their own game IMHO, the smaller 4.6 UR is plenty strong for non-haulers (and still sounds pretty good) and would be a great match for a Hybrid, give the option of a 5.0 UR Hybrid for heavier hauling. All Toyota has to achieve is 30 e-miles, the MPG rating would skyrocket. Make them plugin hybrids and you basically have E-Trucks. Hell, they better do that to the Tacoma as well, I'd be in the market for it... but bring 2nd gen engine and transmission, that thing is bomb-proof :p

Granted, any hybrid would sacrifice some payload, but if Toyota nails their new battery tech, they can give their entire lineup 3x the range for the same weight of current Lithium batteries.

Diesels in the states are beaten to death by emissions. The legendary reliability of diesels has been in a steady decline, and it's not looking any better with DEF systems being required.

Where did Toyota say there will be a V8? Unless they said it, you're speculating just as much as everyone else saying it'll only be a TTV6.

Same. Of all the people I know who own F150's and especially Silverado/GMCs, one of the very first things they do is have stop/start and AFM disabled...and in almost every single case, suddenly mileage drops.

Why do people hate start/stop? I've never had it but it seems not burning gas at the stop light when you aren't moving isn't a bad thing...

It's extra stress on the motor and negatively impacts reliability.

In theory it sounds great but to me, constantly stopping then starting the engine can't be good for it. This seems like one of those concepts pushed to meet mpg requirements and the consumer has to pay for the fall out. The engine wear and tear has to be exponential.
