I commend them for that. I work indoors, in an office setting just a few miles south and I'm choking on the smoke in here.

I was playing around with the advanced controls on this site, and realized it has what I think is a forcast switch. It goes from one day which I think is right now, to twenty days. This is today.
and I expect this at their current growth one week from now.
This image is fires closest to Portland a week from now zoomed in.
Pray for rain, and more fire fighters, is all I can say.

Your images never post, but you're looking at the past. It stores the past 20 days of history. If you take it down to 1 day, it shows fire activity in the past 24 hours, and is a good representation of what areas the fires are currently actively burning.

The GOES satellite parked above us is another good tool to see where these are currently burning.

The whole west coast needs rain. So many fires it's crazy.

I don t think so because the one week image shows fire in areas that are currently, and have been fire free. There s no telling how accurate this is, but the evac zone, for get prepared, has just met the Multnomah county line.

The air quality really sucks even here north of Portland. It was a little better yesterday. I even saw a small amount of blue sky yesterday afternoon but today seems much worse.

If you use the calendar you can see new fire activity on that date. The minus symbol after the date and before the number of days allows you to add X amount of days past into that history onto that map so you can fire activity aggregated across those days. You can see it grow as you go back in history using the date feature (leave the days filter set to 1), and specifically on the days where there was a strong east wind. Specifically, watch the date ruler on the bottom when you select 20 days, it goes back in history 20 days, not forward.

What you say makes sense, but why does the fire get closer to Portland, and other towns, as you add days? The fire has never been as close as it depicts. If you click the calander, and select a previous day it is as you suggest. The drop down with numbers, and weeks is different.

Strong east winds back then driving explosive growth to the west. Winds shifted back from the west, and south. Biggest hot spots are to the northeast now. That's not to say that there isn't fire there. There might be, it's just not that aggressive.
I saw a news story this morning that had satellite overlays showing current fire activity. I'm trying to find it for you because it shows better than I can explain.

I don t know about the nasa site. This is the City of Estacada site. If you click the Evacuation Map link it s showing fires and evac zones in real time I think. Look at Estacada, and Eagle Creek. Fire s are nearly upon them.

Thoughts are with my brothers and sisters getting hit by these fires. On top of the Covid-19 pandemic, I don't know what to expect next. Maybe locusts? We are getting dense smoke in Bend, but no immediate vicinity fires. Stay safe folks.

It's showing the boundaries of the fires thus far. The active spots are noted by the dots I circled, which are the same as what the local news is reporting.

Just watching Fox news. A man was arrested for starting a fire in Oregon with molotov cocktail, and was let go the next dayo_O He then started five more fires, and was arrested again. What the hell is the matter with this picture?

Not surprised at all since that's how all the violent protestors are being handled right now in OR and WA. I'll just stop there or will be quickly in violation of a forum rule or two on politics...

No. He was older; maybe in his thirties, but looked like a transient to me. Of course mug shots have a way of making everyone look like a transient.

He should get a taste of his own medicine and be set on fire with a molotov cocktail.

There have been 8? 10? arrests so far? I know a handful of them have been swept under the rugs too. In Silverton there was 2 arrested alone for burning down barns full of hay. They were carrying lighters, fire works and other things. No images of the people from what I remember.

So many people taking advantage of the situation to sew more chaos.

PolkCo Scanner on Facebook has info. 2 fires within 2 miles of each other. Both suspicious "buildings burning down"

We have almost daily reports now of random shootings in the Seattle area, as well as people throwing rocks/bricks off overpasses into traffic below. Haven't seen any reports of fire bugs starting crap, but you never know. All of it almost drowns out the reports of the protests in Seattle, even when they often turn violent.

Remember "back in the day" when someone on a fire crew would start a fire so he'd get to work? Ahh, the good old days. o_O

I read a report last night (on the BBC I think) that talked about many of the CA fires were started by a big lightening storm. Komo News (Seattle) has an article today (https://komonews.com/news/local/downed-power-lines-started-13-wildfires-in-oregon-report-says) that says downed power lines started a bunch in OR that merged into one of the big burns. Power lines coming down started one of the fires that was south of Seattle as well.

Beachie Creek and Lionshead have been burning since mid-August from a thunderstorm we had. They were smaller in size until these east winds picked up, blowing 60mph, and turned them into hell on earth. They have since merged.

Riverside started on the 8th and is "human caused". Human caused can be anything from equipment malfunction to unattended campfire, or arson. That area is loaded with campgrounds, roadside camping, PGE transmission lines, and lately, homeless making illegal camps.
I think I heard Riverside was due to power lines, but I can't be sure. Right now it's close to merging with Beachie and they're trying like hell to stop that.

The other major one we have is the Holiday Farm fire, which last I heard, the cause is unknown. Again, in a remote area with lots of camping and transmission lines.

Yeah those east winds really screwed things up. I watched the sky last Tuesday all day. Hardly any smoke in our area. Then within 2 hours we were at hazardous conditions. For the first time in a week we dropped down to unhealthy. Now back up to very unhealthy. The fire by us is now contained.

Hopefully we get this rain that was supposed to be here a couple days ago. Hope everyone is doing ok.

I'm a bit of a weather geek so I like to watch this unfold. When I heard this was coming I was glued to the weather and GOES satellites. You could watch this blow in. It started from the north, northwest and you could watch a little bit of a dust storm blow in, followed by smoke. I was watching the Beachie Creek fire because it was burning in one of my favorite hiking areas, near Opal Pool and Jawbone Flats. It was relatively small at the time and I wasn't prepared for what I saw when I woke up the next day to check the satellites. I never imagined Lionshead catching up and merging. It wasn't even on my mental radar.

As for the rains, unfortunately they're a blessing and a curse. We're about one month away from the beginning of our "wet" season. There isn't going to be much time for vegetation to re-establish and stabilize the earth.

It is a La Nina year, so it means super wet early. Which sucks for the East Coasters as it means lots of storms, and sucks for me because it means dry California.

Hopefully you can get some of those good La Nina storms to pass through early and really saturate the burn areas. Maybe they'll let the forestry department go in and clear some of the burnt up fuel and plant proper fire breaks...

I really think the practices used currently by the forestry service is to blame for some the huge fires we've been having. There was a time when an area was logged, you could go in and load up on scraps left behind by loggers. You can't do that anymore. Now they leave these huge snag piles of branches, logs and bark and you can't touch them, let alone get to them. They're left for years to dry out. Not only are they unsightly, they're a huge fire hazard.
I've seen some that are easily 10 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet in diameter. WTF is it with this kind of shit?

Check out this Ted Talk from a few years back. It explains why, and how it is just going to get worse with the current policies being pushed, especially on the coast states.
