Boomer the 2020 SR5 Overland Build

I've been a long time Toyota guy, and got into overlanding in our 86' 4runner (Smurf) years ago.




It made many trips west from NC to CO, UT, WY, ID and MT, but space was not allowing us to travel as a family as comfortably as we'd like.

Pongo enters the picture:





Pongo served us well, but again, room was an issue when traveling.

Now entering the ring is Boomer. I knew I would change everything that made and Off-Road or PRO special, so I went SR5. My plan is to build this truck to basically a Tundra version of what Pongo was.


Dove it home one time stock, while I waited for parts to arrive:

Then...Wheels, Tires, Lift:






and have started blacking it out(door handles have been changed too).

How you liking the OME setup. I’m undecided between that in a 6112/5160 setup

 

I went 6112 with 2 coachbuilder shims on left, and one on right, on the rear I went 2" lift shackles with Nitrochargers. It rides a little stiffer than stock, but
still rides good. I've had great luck with Nitrocharger longevity, so it's hard for me to want to go a different direction. It sits higher than I expected, but I'm ok with
that. If I were going to redo it all over, i'd probably just do one shim on the driver side. I'll be adding a bumper in a month, so it will take down some of the extra height.
Then, when I add the winch, I'll step up on the spring rate with the coils.

Looks like your rig is coming along great. Eager to see all of modifications. BTW, what size tire and wheel combo are you running? Keep up the good work.

We're in love with the extra room the Tundra offers. When packing, instead of having to install, remove, re-arrange, re-install,
remove, over and over to make fit. This time everything fit first try, including our ground tent. Much easier than with the Tacoma.

Just a note, according to the ScanGaugeII, at highway speeds with ambient temps in the low-mid 90s,
Trans pan temp maintain 212-222°F. I'll be adding a trans cooler setup, but will continue to monitor temps. I'm curious to
see how it does at lower speed wheeling conditions.

There is a trip slated out west early next month. During which there will be a pretty big transformation. Super excited to see
how it turns out. Will also be camping and wheeling with my brother(drives a supercharged long travel Tundra) for a week
while out there.

Sweet rig!

Definitely excited. I've been lining up the CBI parts up since before my truck was built
I knew what I wanted to do with a Tundra, but my Tacoma actually sold before I expected it to.

Can't wait to get out west again.

 

My Prinsu rack arrived and I installed it the week before my trip west:



We made the trip west(5200miles round trip) with no issues, and had a great time.
First stop was a CBI for their front bumper, rock sliders, skid plates, bed rack, and CVT Rainier Hybrid tent install...Then on to the fun part of the trip.


I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out.

 

Smart move going with the SR5, wish I had done that. I changed everything but the wheels.

Nice setup! After looking at your pictures I'm now sold on going with the CBI bumper. My only hesitation is I thought I spied a new bumper design on one of their instagram videos but haven't seen any confirmation yet.
