I topped off today and noticed lots of room in the fuel neck. I continued to tap the gas pump and was able to add more than 2.5 gallons before the fuel reached the filler neck. Is there a reason to this madness? In a road trip this could really add up.

Careful when you top it off. Some have had problems with some sort of valve that gets plugged and then you can’t fuel at all. Topping off our trucks is no good

“Overfilling the gas tank can cause liquid gas to enter the charcoal canister, or carbon filter, which is designed only for vapor.”

Excessively filling, can push fuel into the evap canister. Then, when the canister would normally purge fuel vapor into the engine,
it would vent liquid fuel into the engine un-metered. I've seen this on smaller displacement vehicles, actually cause the engine to
cut off. Not sure what it would do to something the size of the 5.7, but would assume it could cause it to run rough, stumble at
    lower rpms at the minimum.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
I've wondered this myself. After the pump shuts off the first time, I give it 30 seconds and then continue to fill until it shuts off again. I stop after that. Words to live by- "Don't get greedy".

LOL, that's the 'TFL' method. I've done that too, but the more I've been reading up about it, the more I think I'm going to stop and just stop pumping after the first click.

That is a very bad thing to do. This is one of the main failures in the Evap system. The charcoal canister will fill up with fuel. It is designed for vapor ONLY! Do not top off the your fuel. When the pump stops you are full. When a vehicle comes in to my shop with evap issues, and the canister is the culprit we ask if they top off their fuel. 90% say yes. So please stop doing that.

I let the pump shut off fuel delivery automatically, I then round up the next quarter or dollar manually.
