4X4 or 4X2? what should i get?

I’m in the market for a new long term Toyota pickup. The price difference between the two powertrains is about $3,000. What’re some questions i should ask myself to help me make my decision?

"How often will I use 4wd"?

 

Do you live in the frozen north, do you go off road in places that requires 4wd, do you use steep boat ramps, if you live in the south will you ever move up north. If no to all then 2wd.

 

Resell will be better with the 4x4.

 

I would rather have it and not need it ...plus it's way cooler having 4 x 4

 

What’re the consequences if you unload a boat or jetski on a steep loading ramp without 4WD?

 

I lived in So Cal and regretted not getting a 4x4 to chase my friends out in the dunes, then moved North to Reno, where it rarely snowed, but having to go over the sierras and installing chains each way was shitty at best... Again I greatly regretted not getting a 4x4, but I'm happy with my 2wd..

Ask yourself...."Why am I even considering 2wd?"

 

I had a 1997 4WD 4-Runner for 8 years.
Only time I ran the 4WD was when it rained to keep it lubed up.

When I bought my 2WD 2005, I didn't even consider 4WD.

When I bought my 2014 2WD, I was in a jam.
The 2005 was in the shop from a tire shop fail (long story) and being December of 2014, Toyota was giving a sh!tload of rebates, incentives, and discounts (0 % interest) for all 2014s.
My selection was a bit limited.
So the dealer found me one, I liked it, they had it shipped in, and I bought it.

In retrospect;
It does ice or snow once a year or so in Dallas and 4WD would be nice to have.
Better to have it and not need it, much like my 4-Runner.

As others stated, 4WD will increase your resell value.
But you'll need to keep it more than a year ( ) for that to even come to fruition..

So if it is in your budget, get the 4WD, if not get a 2WD.

It really depends on your wants, needs, where you live, and intentions of what you want out of the truck.
But if you are already driving a 2019, there is no reason to be shopping for another Tundra.
You're going to take a HUGE unnecessary depreciation hit on a trade in.. ..

 

All the ramps I've used over the years always seem to be very slippery especially if they're concrete. I wouldn't recommend a 2WD if you plan on launching anything from a boat ramp.

 

I love having a 4x4, but I rarely would use it in San Antonio. So when I found the deal I did for the 4x2 I jumped on it. Otherwise I would have been looking for a 4x4. Just couldn’t justify what would have been a $5,000+ difference.

 

I would get a 4x4. Just in case. Better have it and not need it than need it and not have it and when you think about it, $3000 more on a $40k truck ain’t that much in the big picture. Plus the Tundra is a monster...it should come with 4x4 standard.

 

Get a 4x4 it’s the way to go. You can never go wrong with a 4x4

 

I will never own a truck without 4x4.

 

4WD!!

 

The first time you need it you’ll kick yourself the whole walk home for not having.

 

I guess it’s all in how you use it. I can’t imagine not having 4x4. I’ve driven hundreds of miles at a time in 4HI on snowy and icy roads.

4X4 for rainy, snow, icing days. I only used 4X4 less than 25 days in a year but it worths to have 4X4.

Depends on what you do. My first Tundra was 2wd. Had no problems but felt like I limited myself. Eventually traded for a 2019 4wd. I’ve found that launching my boat on some slippery boat ramps had become easier and safer.

 

If resell values (and number of potential buyers) matter to you.. 4x4. If not, 4x2 should be fine.

My 2001 Tundra was 4x2 and I was able to sell with no problems. But I did realize that 'most' truck buyers would only consider 4x4 and the resell value would have been higher if i had 4x4. I live in a large city so i found a buyer quickly but i remember thinking if i was in smaller community, finding a buyer might have taken longer

 

I don’t off-road my tundra that’s what my Fj is for. But I did get the 4x4 because the time will come when pinstripes won’t bother me down in the swamp. Last week at work we needed to move a storage container in our yard over a few feet so naturally I grabbed the tow straps and hooked up the tundra. Being that I was on dirt the truck started to slide in 2x so engaged the 4x4 low and got the traction I needed to move the thing. 4x4 is a very useful thing to have in a truck and I would never buy one without it. Everyone I know that has passed on 4x4 wished they did at some point. It does provide the truck with better resale availability also. Just my 2cents.

 

Personally I would never consider a non 4x4 truck or SUV. But I live in VA and we can get pretty good snow on occasion.

 

I live in CA and on winter family trips and other camping trips I was glad to have a 4x4. Even just basic trips to the lake. The other weekend I was watching a guy in a BRAND NEW Ram 2500 trying to get out of a dirt parking spot and he was just stuck stuck stuck spinning his wheels. I eventually walked over and saw the 4x4 badge on the side of his truck and just told him "switch it in to 4wd". He did and backed out smooth and easy.

 

4x4 in your truck is the same as people who conceal carry a pistol. 99.9 percent will never use it, but that one time it saves you somehow, it saves you.
