Odyssey vs Northstar

Which is better and why?? I need a new battery and don’t know what to get.

 

Can't go wrong with either.

 

I went with North Star, I had bad results w odyssey batteries w electronic equipment and solar panels out in the middle of nowhere. They wouldn’t work with us on any warranty. We bought a lot of them initially.

 

Did you go with a group 27? Did the stock battery hold down work?

 

Yes and yes.

 

I deal with both at work. Northstar has been the better company to deal with and in my opinion a more reliable product, I personally use the NS in all my stuff. BUT I believe odyssey has recently purchased northstar and the future of certain product lines is unknown. All i can say is i've been trying to have an oddyssey pc2250 replaced under warranty for over 6 months and we can't even get a response from them about it so as long as northstar continues to operate as they did before i would personally go that route if possible.

 

Love my X2 by northstar. Powers a fridge and cranks the engine. It’s a beast. 92AH and there seems to be some discounts popping up on batteries plus right now.

 

We use them in boats in south Fl and haven’t had any heat issues with either so I wouldn’t worry too much they’ll both hold up. For less money deca makes a good performing agm as well. I think warranty is shorter but decent batteries regardless let time I used them.

 

Only one I've had experience with was a NorthStar in my Tacoma. When I sold the truck the battery was 4 years old, and had been running a SnoMaster
fridge 24/7 the entire time. When it's time to upgrade from stock I have no hesitation going to a NorthStar.

 

My Odyssey’s don’t like cold weather. Anything under freezing and they don’t hold a charge very long. I’m not getting odyssey again.

 

Anyone trickle charging there AGM’s one a month to top em off? That’s the only thing that was keeping me from going to an AGM.

 

I probably did mine 4-6 times over 4 years.

 

Is this necessary?

 

Happy with my NS. I got an M version with the extra posts for connecting auxiliary items.

 

I just installed the same. Has great reviews. They have a $20 mail in rebate going on til end of the month right now. order online and another 10% off.
5 year warranty and made by Northstar. So far so good.

 

like other batteries, only if you don't use your truck. Mine is on trickle charge 24/7 (Genius5 by Norco, has 12V AGM mode) since I wfh and tundra is not my DD. was the same for the oem toyota battery.

It upped the voltage on mine about a half a volt if i remember. not sure if its worth it, but piece of mind.....

 

I run that too. A lot of the SGU guys do. Took about 4 months for mine to arrive 'cause I ordered at the beginning of fu&%$$# pandemic!

yep Torrance shop. suggest you call first the store closest to you to make sure they have it in stock before driving there.

Got it. Waiting for it to be 9 to make sure they have it close to me in Rancho Cucamonga. About 20 mins away but it is what it is. Found a 20% off coupon I’m soo excited I get to save money.

 

you most likely need the short one, but double check your fuse box. The $150 one is adjustable so you can fine tune how much voltage your alt puts out, the blade ones will up it about a half a volt. It took me about 2.5months to get mine, those prices are in Australian Dollar, so it'll be less in USD.

I accidentally ordered one from a link someone here had copy/pasted from a tacoma forum....ended up being the longer blade one for a tacoma, but they said it would work just fine (and it does).

I have the genius5. works great.
last time I checked it was 12.97V.
off the showroom it was 12.5V iirc.

 

Does the stock battery hold down work just fine with that battery?

I use NOCO quick detach plug with battery level (25/50/75/100%) and fuse permanently attached underneath hood. Then when I get home I plug it straight in the GENIUS5 trickle charger. Been great since March.

Genius10, it will be faster to charge.

 

The adjustable one, don't remember how much it was but it wasn't cheap.

 

i shot an email to northstar asking them about charging voltages. Here's the response:

"Thanks for your email. Standard voltage regulation on vehicles is perfectly fine for all Thin Plate Pure Lead batteries (both Odyssey and NorthStar). The challenge often times comes from too small of an alternator (not enough amps to reach voltage regulation), voltage drop (typically only an issue if battery is not under the hood), or not enough time to reach full charge. We typically DO NOT recommend a voltage step up in automotive applications as it will increase the potential of overcharging and thus dry out of the battery. The vehicles alternator (assuming good amperage output) will provde the energy needed to charge the battery back up under most conditions and a trickle charge is not needed unless the vehicle is left without running for weeks/months and then a trickle charge is needed to maintain a fully charged battery unless the battery is disconnected from the vehicle. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions."

It sounds like the voltage booster isn't really needed if you dont have a lot of draw on your battery. I have a big stereo thats going to get bigger this week, so i like the idea of having it.
