2018 Tundra with 4.6 engine trailer brake install

Snipping the blue and black wires at the connect behind the passenger side kick panel is the only thing I have not done. I will try that and report back here so others can follow. Thank you, btw, yes its a 2018 Limited 5.7 iForce.

 

did you by chance go back and add the auto resetting circuit breaker? If so which one did you get?

Also, does the break still show up on the dash screen behind the steering wheel?

Lastly, any more issues on the install and how is the P3 working? Any updates?

Do a search on "IBC" or "integrated brake controller". There are a lot of threads on this topic, and you'll get a feel for the problems and solutions the community has experienced. Unfortunately, you'll probably have to read a LOT to find the answers you need, but I'm pretty sure your questions been covered.

 

Thanks for the info. I was referencing the answer I found above. But I am curious if the guy that posted the great info had more input after he successfully installed and provided as much detail as he did. I’ve been researching this for months and @dwkarl was the best I found so far for the 2018 IBC issues.

 

I also have a 2019 Toyota Tundra sr5 4.6L do you have to install a diode between the controller and the brake light switch to keep the 12vdc from feeding back to the brake light switch when you use the manual control lever. I have a P2 controller I want to install.

Brake switch, like on the brake pedal linkage, or is it in the kick panel like the Black and Blue? I looked around the brake pedal linkage and there wasn't a tan wire on any of the harnesses. Thanks!

 

What MY do you have? This thread is specifically for 2018+ Tundras with 4.6L. If your Tundra is a 2017 or earlier, the brake controller connector is behind the lower dash panel to the right of the steering column where the OEM IBC would be installed. Use a

Tekonsha 3031-P adapter harness for plug-n-play installation of most aftermarket brake controllers. You don't have to worry about making any wiring connections except the ground if your truck is 2017 or earlier

If you have a 2018 or later, find the switch on the brake pedal linkage. Toyota calls the wire color to the brake switch "BE" or beige. See the wiring diagrams in Post #7 of this thread.

 

I have a 2018 SR with 4.6. I only see a beige wire on the "switch" thats on the parking brake. There is a big rubber boot over some wires that looks to be hooked to a "switch" on the brake pedal linkage, but I haven't been successful in pulling it back.

 

I found the wire. Its in the flex loom bundle marked by the pink arrows in this picture. I had to use a splicing connector to connect it. Wow it was hard to get to, etc.

 

Will this work on my 2018?

I just did this install on a 2018 5.7L. When I turn the truck off the tekonsha led stays lit. I’m assuming that the 12+ black wire isn’t disconnected by the ignition. How can I wire it so that when the ignition is turned off the brake controller doesn’t stay on?

 

That is how all P3 controllers behave normally...at least in Tundras. Toyota designed the controller harness that way.

When you turn the ignition switch to OFF, the P3 will go to sleep mode (black screen) with negligible parasitic draw after 15 minutes. If you want the controller to go ON/OFF with the key, you are wanting an atypical installation.

 

Yea, My Redarc brake controller always has power, it just turns off on its own until I push a button.

Before I dig back into this, maybe someone here has some ideas. My Redarc install SEEMED to be good but since last summer when I installed from the help of this thread, if I turn the dial up past maybe 11:00 and REALLY jam on the brakes, it gives me errors and disables my Toyota Sense stuff. Below that seems fine but I don't have a great sense for how much it's actually braking and it just generally makes me nervous. I was driving the Million Dollar Highway last summer and it started doing it. Thought I might have a heart attack.
Any ideas why it would misbehave as I turn up the sensitivity? Ready to attack this.

So I am using this thread to the fullest extent, also having a non equipped 2019 Tundra and Im thinking of running wires to the back now. Im kinda worried about that feedback thing. Maybe if I clip the wires and use Scotchloks right before the 7 pin connector I may avoid that issue?

 

I DO have the integrated controller and it's been terrible to replace. Not going well at all. At this point I would almost rather do what you're doing and bypass the whole system. Would love to hear how it turns out for you.

 

I have a 2018 SR 4.6L with no tow package. I plan on using the information in this thread to add a brake controller. There is clearly a lot of useful information in this thread that has and will benefit a lot of people. But the information is scattered amongst three pages of replies. Would anyone who has successfully completed this procedure care to document the step by step process in a single post? It would help a lot of people.

 

Also. Follow up question. Are the instructions in this post also applicable to installing an OEM Trailer Brake Controller in a 2018 Tundra SR 4.6L? Or does this only apply to the Tekonsha?

We attempted to install the P3 using the ‎

$15 3031-P Tekonsha Trailer Brake Controller Harness, Compatible with Select Toyota Tacoma, Tundra

3031-P harness and couldn't make it happen using the aforementioned instructions for a 2018 4.6. The controller powered up fine and seemed to work as we cycled through menu options, however there were dash light warnings (brake override, collision, etc). Pulled everything and set the OEM stuff back in with no issues.

This was going in a 2019 SR5.

 

I've got everything figured out except the white ground. I understand that the closed eye connector (on the 3031 cable) hooks to ground...that's not a problem. My question is, after I pulled all of the wires from the connector, where does the other end of the white wire go? In the factory connector?
