We went from a house built in 2005 with multiple closets to a home built in the 1890's with a small stairwell closet. Fortunately a previous owner opened the attic up for storage (with a spiral staircase). We figured out really quick that nearly every piece of furniture we buy has to have some kind of storage element to it.

Thanks - they can be a bit of a pain to maintain but it's completely worth it. We are thinking ours was built around 1895. It's when the original landowner purchased deed and he had 6 or 9 kids, I can't remember. So I'm thinking he didn't wait too long to build. The staircase looks like it dates back to that time frame. He was also the first Commissioner for Smithville in Bastrop County and the head of some farmer coop. Also served in Company B of 4th Texas Cavalry and was later Quartermaster for the ExConfederates of Bastrop County. I'm with you on geeking out over the home history.

I tested the new Nest Protect smoke detector out today by smoking up the house making smash burgers. Great success. I got a kick out of it when my phone alerted me that "Smoke is in the hallway. Check what's happening" before it started screaming at me. I was able to silence the Nest Protect before it went off. As the smoke cleared, the Nest sent another alert that "Smoke is clearing in the hallway".

Pretty neat system. I'm convinced enough to buy a second one for the basement and eventually upgrade my thermostat and doorbell too.

I covered the plants and winterized sprinklers for snow. ONE day of snow. Been in the 90’s and then had snow, now back to late 80’s. Oh, Colorado.

I forgot to add that we have the thermostats, the doorbell, the front door lock, and the alarm system. It's all pretty awesome. The door lock is set up so when you unlock it with the code, it turns off the alarm. It's also set up so it will auto lock itself if you have it unlocked for more than 5 minutes.

That's pretty cool. I hadn't really considered the door lock. Any idea how it would fair in -40 temperatures?

I was like "-40 temperatures..?!" and then saw you are from Alberta. Damn.

I found this "The Nest × Yale Lock is certified ANSI/BHMA A156. 36, Grade 2. It was designed to work in outside temperatures as cold as –22° and as hot as 140°F (–30° to 60°C)*. IP65 rating* - The Nest × Yale Lock can withstand dust, rain, and snow."

I thought Northern Michigan got cold.

Just an update to my earlier question on countertops. Appreciate all the input. The wife and I ultimate decided on quartz for the fact it’s what we(she) liked.

I have a portable back hoe that would be easier to move with another set of wheels. By having the wheels move down for a move I would not have to go through tHe process of moving the outriggers and swapping them. I purchased some square and round tubing, along with a hub, spindle and matching wheels. I dis some welding, painting and assembly. Attached are photos of my craftsmanship. The design is similar to another guys who did a YouTube video. I also added a bolt on thumb. 38244C89-EFFF-4B0B-AB38-C0679B77DE1D.jpgCA7A0F26-2ECA-4C78-9037-71867BC54D87.jpgF37A7469-6958-4879-9009-50941C84946D.jpg800BF0F9-EB73-4CBA-A67A-277E1595FCCC.jpg7408BDB5-14EA-4282-A88F-E03F9A56FDD8.jpgA933C3C2-9614-4898-9B87-C209B0152A4A.jpg82700B1E-089B-4EEA-BAE5-379A5D523E8B.jpg7FB45745-5482-42E3-8F71-409F47BB3C24.jpg

I posted this picture way back in the spring of our ugly paneled I beam cover. After several outdoor projects, I could finally return to finishing the rec. room and got the new beam up. . I pretty much just have some trim work to do and then it is finally completed.

Yup, it gets cold here. It doesn't hit -40 often, but it does do it every year. -15F is pretty much standard for day time temps in January and February with nights dropping to -30F and -40. Then there's the cold snaps where -40F is the day time temp and we usually get 1 or 2 nights where it hits almost -60F.

I used Sherwin Williams Super Paint Satin with a 4” block brush and a whizz roller. It laid down real nice.

My first career was with SW so if anyone has paint questions... I may have some info left in the brain bank.

Alright guys and gals. Been working on the house for about a month. Will go on the market in a week or so. Now to decide if we are going to list it or sell it ourselves.
